GATE Life Sciences Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
90 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
GATE XL is the Life Sciences paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a three-hour computer-based test run by IISc Bangalore and the seven older IITs. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras.
Unlike the 23 papers with one fixed syllabus, XL is a paper you assemble: a compulsory section plus two you choose.
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 |
| XL0 Chemistry, compulsory for every XL candidate | 25 |
| Two optional sections, chosen from XL1 to XL5 | 30 each |
| Total | 100 |
So a quarter of the paper is chemistry, and you can't drop it. For a botany or zoology graduate who hasn't touched chemistry since first year, that's a bigger section than General Aptitude and bigger than either optional one.
The five optional sections are Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food Technology. You pick two; the other three aren't on your paper.

Exam Pattern
| Mode | Computer Based Test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Medium | English |
| Questions | 65: 10 General Aptitude + 55 subject |
| Total marks | 100: General Aptitude 15, Life Sciences 85 |
| Paper code | XL, one of 30 papers |
XL doesn't follow the 15/13/72 split of the engineering papers. Its 100 marks are General Aptitude 15, XL0 Chemistry 25 and two optional sections at 30 each. XE, XH, AR, GE, GG and RA also use optional parts.
Question types
| Type | Answer | Wrong answer |
|---|---|---|
| MCQ, 1 mark | one of four options | −1/3 |
| MCQ, 2 marks | one of four options | −2/3 |

MSQ gives no partial credit: you need every correct option and no wrong one. An on-screen virtual calculator is provided; physical calculators aren't allowed.
Two papers
You can sit two papers from a published list of pairs. With XL as the first, the second can only be BT, CY or EY.

Eligibility Criteria
Qualification
You must be in the 3rd or higher year of any undergraduate degree, or already hold a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.
That includes B.E., B.Tech., B.Pharm., B.Arch., three-year B.Sc./B.A./B.Com., M.Sc./M.A./MCA, professional degrees such as MBBS, BDS and B.V.Sc., and professional society exams recognised as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. With an international degree you must be in the 3rd year or higher, or hold a bachelor's degree of at least three years.
Not required
- No age limit.
- No limit on attempts.
- Your degree doesn't have to match the paper.
How to Apply
Fee, per paper
| Category | Regular window | Extended (late fee) window |
|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwBD | Rs 1,000 | Rs 1,500 |
| All others, including foreign nationals | Rs 2,000 | Rs 2,500 |
Two papers cost double: Rs 2,000 / Rs 4,000 in the regular window, Rs 2,500 / Rs 4,500 in the extended one. Every woman pays the concessional fee, whatever her category.
The portal
Apply through GOAPS, linked from gate2027.iitm.ac.in. GATE 2027 adds live facial verification and DigiLocker to registration. A paid rectification window after the closing date lets you correct details already submitted; it isn't a second chance to register.
Participating Institutes
Admission
GATE scores are used for M.Tech, M.E., M.S. and direct PhD admission at the IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and many central and state institutions, and for MoE assistantships.
The IITs and IISc admit through COAP; NITs and IIITs through CCMT. Each needs its own registration. A GATE score alone doesn't admit you anywhere.
Recruitment
GATE Life Sciences is used mainly for M.Sc., M.Tech. and PhD admission. PSU advertisements that recruit on GATE usually name engineering papers, so check each advertisement's eligibility list before assuming XL is accepted.
Exam Centres
GATE runs at centres across India and a few abroad. You list preferred cities in the application; the allotted city is announced on 4 January 2027, before the admit card. Preference is followed where capacity allows but isn't guaranteed. The centre address is on the admit card.
Important Dates
GATE 2027, organised by IIT Madras.
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| GOAPS application opens | 2 September 2026 |
| Regular registration closes | 27 September 2026 |
| Extended registration closes (with late fee) | 5 October 2026 |
| Application rectification window | 14 – 21 October 2026 |
| Examination city announced | 4 January 2027 |
| Admit card | to be announced |
| Examination | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 |
| Results | 19 March 2027 |
The opening date moved twice, from 14 August 2026 to 27 August and then to 2 September, so check the official dates page. There are six exam days this time against four in GATE 2026, because of 30 papers and the new Robotics and Automation paper.
Admit Card
Download it from GOAPS with your enrolment ID or email and password. The exam city comes first, on 4 January 2027; IIT Madras hasn't fixed the admit card date yet.
Bring the admit card and the original photo ID whose details you entered in the application. A different ID or a photocopy isn't accepted.
Result
- Marks out of 100: what you scored in your session.
- GATE Score out of 1000: normalised against the qualifying mark and the top scorers. This is the number institutes and employers compare.
Papers held in more than one session are normalised across sessions. The score is valid for three years from the result.
The response sheet and provisional answer key come out before the result, with a paid challenge window. The final key can differ from the provisional one.
Cut Off
GATE publishes a qualifying mark for each paper and category, set each year from that year's results. It gets you a scorecard, nothing more.
The score needed for an IIT M.Tech seat or a PSU call is far higher, and each institute or PSU sets its own in its admission round or advertisement.
Preparation Tips
- Start with the chemistry section. XL0 is 25 marks, compulsory, and for most XL candidates the furthest from their degree.
- Pick your two optional sections early. They're 60 of the 100 marks. Sampling three and deciding late means preparing 90 marks of syllabus to sit 60.
- Pick sections that overlap. Biochemistry shares ground with Zoology's molecular biology and parts of Microbiology; Food Technology's food chemistry overlaps with XL0.
- Answer every MSQ and NAT. No penalty. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 and a 2-mark one 2/3.
- Don't give up General Aptitude. 15 marks, and no biology needed.
- Work from the section PDFs. They're detailed, and a summary will mislead you on depth.
- Solve the past XL papers. IIT Madras posts papers back to 2007 and keys for recent years on its downloads page.
- Think before adding CY. XL pairs only with BT, CY and EY. CY looks natural given XL0, but it's a full postgraduate chemistry paper and the fee doubles.
