Gujarat Metro Maintainer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
114 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Maintainer is the ITI-entry maintenance grade at Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation, recruited under Recruitment Notification No. GMRCL/HR/RECT/O&M/2026/15 for O&M Personnel (Non-Executives), dated 29 April 2026.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Post | Maintainer (MNTR), in three trades |
| IDA grade | ₹20,000 to 60,000 |
| Medical standard | B-1 |
| Age as on the date of the advertisement | 18 to 25 years |
| Qualification | SSLC pass with a two year ITI in the relevant trade, from a Government recognised University or Institute |
| Vacancies | 252 of the notification's 383 |
| Written examination | Held 5 July 2026 |
Maintainer (Electrical) alone carries 129 posts, the largest single block in the whole notification. The trade split and reservation are in the eligibility section.
Three rules matter more than anything else here. A blank answer costs 0.25, the same as a wrong one, unless you mark Option E, which counts as an attempt with no penalty. The paper's 20 Gujarati questions are qualifying only and excluded from the cut-off, so the merit rests on 80 counted marks, half of them technical. And the job is contractual: two years of training cum probation on a ₹14,000 stipend, then a five year contract on the IDA scale, against a ₹1,25,000 surety bond.
Selection is two stages: the written test, then document verification and a medical in Bee-One (B-1). There is no psychometric test for Maintainers.

Gujarat Metro Maintainer Details
Exam Pattern
| Section | Maintainer | SC/TO and Junior Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Knowledge | 40 | 40 |
| Gujarati language, qualifying | 20 | 20 |
| Logical ability and Reasoning | 15 | 20 |
| General English | 15 | 20 |
| Quantitative aptitude | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 100 | 120 |
| Duration | 120 minutes for both | |
| Marks that count | 80 | 100 |
Multiple choice on an OMR sheet, in English, held on one or more days. A Maintainer gets the same 120 minutes as the longer paper, so 72 seconds a question against 60. The twenty fewer questions all come out of the general sections: technical stays at 40, which makes it half of what counts.
The marking rule
All questions are to be attempted compulsorily. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every unattempted question, for every wrong answer, and for an instance of multiple answers against a question. If a candidate does not know the answer to a particular question, he or she may mark option E on the OMR sheet for that question. Marking Option E against a question will be treated as an attempt and will not invite a negative marking.
| What you do with a question | Effect |
|---|---|
| Answer it correctly | +1 |
| Answer it wrongly, or mark more than one option | −0.25 |
| Leave it blank | −0.25 |
| Mark Option E | 0, counted as an attempt |
Four wrong answers cancel one right one, and twenty blanks cost five marks in an 80-mark contest that Option E would have saved.
The Gujarati floor
The Gujarati test is qualifying only: 60 per cent for General and 50 per cent for SC, ST, SEBC and EWS, which is 12 and 10 marks out of 20. Its marks shall not be taken into consideration for determining the merit or calculation of the cut-off marks. Below the floor you are out whatever you scored elsewhere; above it you gain nothing.
Syllabus
The notification gives only the section split and says the syllabus for the respective post will be available on the GMRC careers page, at gujaratmetrorail.com/careers. For a Maintainer that matters, because the technical half is trade by trade.
Technical Knowledge, 40 of the 80 counted marks
| Post | Technical paper follows the ITI trade |
|---|---|
| Maintainer (Fitter), NE-004 | Fitter |
| Maintainer (Electrical), NE-005 | Electrician |
| Maintainer (Electronics), NE-006 | Electronics |
The job profile shows what the corporation is testing for: maintenance of the systems and processes behind metro trains, and the installation and execution of lifts, escalators, track, structure, traction, E&M, signalling, telecom and automatic fare collection, train coaches, permanent way, works and stores depots.
The general sections
| Section | Questions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Logical ability and Reasoning | 15 | Counted |
| General English | 15 | Counted; the whole paper is in English |
| Quantitative aptitude | 10 | Counted, the smallest section |
| Gujarati language | 20 | Qualifying only |
Eligibility Criteria
Qualification, by trade
| Post code | Trade | ITI required | Vacancies | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NE-004 | Maintainer (Fitter) | Two year ITI in Fitter | 22 | Gen 15, SEBC 1, ST 3, EWS 3 |
| NE-005 | Maintainer (Electrical) | Two year ITI in Electrician | 129 | Gen 57, SEBC 33, ST 21, SC 6, EWS 12 |
| NE-006 | Maintainer (Electronics) | Two year ITI in Electronics | 101 | Gen 43, SEBC 23, ST 16, SC 9, EWS 10 |
| Total Maintainer vacancies | 252 | |||
In every case an SSLC pass with a two year ITI in the named trade, from a Government recognised University or Institute, held as on the date of the notification. A final-year ITI candidate may apply and sit the paper but must produce the original marksheet at document verification or be disqualified. A qualification from an unrecognised institute is not considered, and a diploma or degree will not be considered as a higher qualification in place of an ITI.
Age
18 to 25 years as on the date of the advertisement, 29 April 2026: the narrowest band in the notification, where SC/TO and Junior Engineer run to 28.
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SEBC, EWS, SC and ST men of Gujarat origin only | 5 years |
| SEBC, EWS, SC and ST women of Gujarat origin only | 10 years, including the 5 for being a woman |
| Unreserved women | 5 years |
| Ex-servicemen | Length of military service plus 3 years, to a maximum of 45 |
Reservation and relaxation follow Government of Gujarat rules, which is why the categories are SEBC and EWS rather than the central OBC-NCL, and why the reserved relaxation is for Gujarat-origin candidates only.
Medical standard B-1
Maintainers need Bee-One (B-1), against A-1 for SC/TO and A-1 not below A-3 for Junior Engineer. The standards follow the Indian Railway Medical Manual and are on the GMRC website. Three bars apply regardless: a candidate found medically unfit is not eligible for any position in GMRCL; candidates who have had Lasik surgery are not suitable for any post; and the posts are technical, so they are not available for persons with disability.
You can apply for one post only under this notification, so in practice your ITI trade decides which of the three you sit.
Selection Process
- OMR based written test, 100 questions in 120 minutes. Marks obtained in the test shall be reckoned for shortlisting candidates for the subsequent stages.
- Document verification and a medical examination in Bee-One (B-1) category.
That is all. The psycho aptitude test in the same notification applies only to Station Controller / Train Operator.
How many are called
No ratio is published. Depending upon the number of vacancies, only those candidates who secure sufficient rank in merit will be called for further selection process in a ratio fixed by GMRCL. Against 252 posts, split 129 Electrical, 101 Electronics and 22 Fitter, that is the only guidance.
The medical
Conducted by a Medical Board constituted and headed by the Civil Surgeon at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and other districts in Gujarat. GMRC pays for the first examination; a second one is at the candidate's expense. Nothing is reimbursed for attending any stage.
Selection is not appointment
Success in the selection process does not confer any right to appointment unless GMRC is satisfied, after such inquiry as it considers necessary, that the candidate having regard to character and antecedents is suitable in all respects. Publication of marks does not confer any right to selection either.
Salary
| Stage | Pay |
|---|---|
| Training cum probation, two years | Stipend of ₹14,000 a month |
| After the training period | Consolidated ₹16,000 a month |
| On successful completion, contractual appointment for five years | IDA scale of ₹20,000 to 60,000, as applicable from time to time |
The advertised grade is not what you start on. You reach it after two years on ₹14,000, and then on a five year contract.
It sits ₹13,000 below the SC/TO and Junior Engineer grade at the floor and ₹40,000 below it at the ceiling (₹33,000 to 1,00,000), the gap being an ITI on an SSLC against a diploma in engineering.
The bond and the contract
- Surety bond of ₹1,25,000 to serve at least three years, excluding leave without pay or extraordinary leave. SC/TO and Junior Engineer sign ₹2,50,000 and train on ₹18,000 a month.
- Training covers classroom, technical and on-the-job work, with examinations to pass. GMRC may lengthen or shorten it.
- Services can be terminated during training, probation or the contract for unsatisfactory performance.
- Resignation needs three months notice or leave salary in lieu, and the Management may decline to accept it.
How to Apply
Online only, through the Careers link at gujaratmetrorail.com/careers. Registration gives you a One Time Registration (OTR) number by SMS and email; an existing OTR holder enters it with date of birth and the form fills itself.
- One post only. A diploma or degree does not substitute for the ITI.
- No change is possible after clicking submit, so check before you do.
- Your name and your father's or husband's name must match your certificates and ID exactly; any alteration may disqualify you.
- Photograph: recent colour passport size on a light background, no cap or dark glasses, no reflections in spectacles, religious headwear not covering the face, about 200 by 230 pixels, under 15 KB. Signature: white paper, black ink pen, about 140 by 60 pixels, 15 KB.
- Keep your email and mobile active until the process ends; GMRC takes no responsibility for a wrong or dead one.
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| Unreserved, male | ₹600 |
| SC, ST, SEBC, EWS, women and ex-servicemen | ₹300 |
Exclusive of bank charges, paid online by card, net banking, IMPS, cash card, wallet or UPI, and not refunded under any circumstances. No e-receipt means the payment failed.
Participating Institutes

| Post | IDA grade | Vacancies | Age | Medical |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NE-001 Station Controller / Train Operator | ₹33,000 to 1,00,000 | 89 | 18 to 28 | A-1 |
| NE-002 Junior Engineer (Electrical) | ₹33,000 to 1,00,000 | 4 | 18 to 28 | A-1, not below A-3 |
| NE-003 Junior Engineer (Electronics) | ₹33,000 to 1,00,000 | 38 | 18 to 28 | A-1, not below A-3 |
| NE-004 to NE-006 Maintainer | ₹20,000 to 60,000 | 252 | 18 to 25 | B-1 |
All vacancies are provisional. Maintainers are posted to Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat or any other GMRCL project in Gujarat, on shift duty including nights, and the department you land in is the Management's call: an Electrician ITI holder may end up on traction, E&M or the stores depot.
Exam Centres
A paper examination: 100 questions on an OMR sheet in 120 minutes, in English, held on one or more days. This cycle's was on 5 July 2026, at centres named on the call letter.

Result
After the 5 July 2026 paper GMRC put up a provisional answer key and took objections, then reviewed and finalised it. Candidates could view and download their own scanned OMR sheet from 6 to 19 July 2026 with roll number and date of birth. Marks were declared in August 2026 in six annexures, one per post, each listing application number, roll number, date of birth, gender, ex-servicemen status and two marks columns. For Maintainers the second column, questions 81 to 100, is the Gujarati section.
The viewing facility gives no right to re-evaluation, re-checking, re-scanning or re-totalling.
Cut Off
GMRC publishes no cut-off table for this recruitment. It publishes each candidate's marks by post instead, as it did in August 2026, on gujaratmetrorail.com/careers. Shortlisting is in a ratio GMRC fixes and does not publish. The only published thresholds are the Gujarati floor of 12 marks for General and 10 for reserved categories, and the 80 counted marks the merit runs on.
Preparation Tips
Never leave a bubble empty
A blank costs 0.25; Option E costs nothing. If you can rule out two of four options, guess. If you can rule out none, mark E. Score your own practice papers with 0.25 off every blank as well as every wrong answer, because no bought practice set will.
Spend most of your time on your trade
Technical Knowledge is 40 of the 80 marks that count. Start from GMRC's post-wise syllabus for Fitter, Electrician or Electronics. After that, reasoning and English at 15 each, then arithmetic at 10.
Gujarati to a safe pass, no further
12 out of 20 for General, 10 for reserved categories. Below it you are out; above it earns nothing.
Practise on paper
72 seconds a question is comfortable, but bubbling an OMR sheet takes real time. Time yourself on paper, not on a screen.
Check yourself against the hard bars first
Age 18 to 25 on 29 April 2026. A two year ITI, which a diploma cannot replace. No Lasik. B-1 fitness. If any of these fails, nothing else matters.
Read the terms before you accept
Two years on ₹14,000, then ₹16,000, then a five year contract, against a ₹1,25,000 bond for three years and a three month notice period. Shift work including nights.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous question papers are available for this exam as of now. GMRC publishes the notification, the post-wise syllabus, the provisional answer key and each candidate's scanned OMR sheet on gujaratmetrorail.com/careers, in the weeks after the paper.
