ITBP Assistant Commandant Syllabus, Exam Pattern
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
ITBP recruits Assistant Commandants directly in three specialist streams, and takes its General Duty officers from somewhere else entirely. That is the thing most guides to this post get wrong.
The Force's Scheme of Recruitment lists four gazetted entries it fills itself:
| Gazetted entry | Rank | Pay Level | Entry pay | Qualification | Age |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant Commandant (Engineer) | Assistant Commandant | Level 10 | ₹56,100 | Degree in Civil Engineering | Not exceeding 30 |
| Assistant Surgeon (AC / Veterinary) | Assistant Commandant | Level 10 | ₹56,100 | B.V.Sc and A.H., plus Veterinary Council of India registration | Not exceeding 35 |
| Judge Attorney (Assistant Commandant) | Assistant Commandant | Level 10 | ₹56,100 | Degree in Law, qualified for enrolment as an Advocate | Not exceeding 30 |
| Deputy Judge Attorney General (Deputy Commandant) | Deputy Commandant | Level 11 | ₹67,700 | Degree in Law, plus five years in legal affairs | Not exceeding 35 |
General Duty is not on that list
The General Duty officer cadre is filled through the UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination, not by the Force. ITBP's own portal shows it: alongside its ordinary admit card links it has carried one reading "Download Admit Card for PET/PST -2025 (Only for AC/GD UPSC)". ITBP runs the physical and medical stages for those candidates; UPSC runs the examination and the selection.
The four entries are not four versions of the same thing
- The height standard for the veterinary entry is the lowest in the entire Force. 157.5 cm for men and 142 cm for women, against 165 cm and 157 cm at the engineering and legal entries, and below every constable standard ITBP publishes.
- The engineer and the veterinary surgeon run faster than the lawyer. 100 m in 16 seconds and 800 m in 3 minutes 45 seconds for men, against 18 seconds and 4 minutes 30 seconds at the legal entries. Same rank, same pay level, different fitness bar.
- Experience is marks at two entries and a precondition at the other two. For Engineer and Veterinary, "Weightage for work experience is being given in interview". For Judge Attorney it is two years in legal affairs and for Deputy Judge Attorney General five, as eligibility.
- Three different papers are set. The legal entries sit two papers of 200 marks in all; the veterinary entry a single two hour paper, half objective and half written; the engineering entry a 100 mark objective Paper-I and a 100 mark subjective Civil Engineering Paper-II whose nineteen topics ITBP publishes in full.
What the job is
ITBP guards 3,488 km of the India-China border, with deployments the Force states run from 9,000 ft to 18,700 ft. An Assistant Commandant (Engineer) builds and maintains at those heights; an Assistant Surgeon (Veterinary) keeps the Force's working animals alive there; a Judge Attorney handles its disciplinary and legal work. These are Group A posts, so the fee is ₹400, with nothing charged to SC and ST candidates, ex-servicemen, or women of every category.

Exam Pattern
Three different written examinations sit behind the four gazetted entries. Find yours before reading further.
Assistant Commandant (Engineer): 200 marks in two papers
Paper-I, objective, 100 marks, 2 hours
| Section | Questions | Marks | Language |
|---|---|---|---|
| General awareness | 25 | 25 | Bilingual |
| Reasoning | 25 | 25 | Bilingual |
| Numerical Aptitude | 25 | 25 | Bilingual |
| General English | 25 | 25 | English |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Paper-II, subjective, Civil Engineering, 100 marks, 2 hours
| Part | Questions | Marks each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 5 | 2 | 10 |
| B | 5 | 8 | 40 |
| C | 5 | 10 | 50 |
| Total | 15 | 100 |
Fifteen written answers in two hours averages eight minutes a question, and half the paper sits in Part C's five ten-mark questions. The nineteen topics Paper-II is drawn from are in the syllabus section.
Judge Attorney and Deputy Judge Attorney General: 200 marks in two papers
Paper-I, 100 marks, 2 hours
| Section | Questions | Marks | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence | 25 | 25 | Objective, bilingual |
| General awareness and General Knowledge | 25 | 25 | Objective, bilingual |
| General English | not stated | 50 | Half objective and half subjective |
| Total | 100 |
General English is half of Paper-I, and it is the only section in any ITBP paper deliberately split between objective and written answers. Twenty five marks of written English, in a paper otherwise made of multiple choice questions, is easily overlooked.
Paper-II, Professional Subject, 100 marks, 2 hours
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | 60 | 60 |
| Subjective | 10 | 40 |
| Total | 70 | 100 |
Both legal posts sit the same two papers with the same sixteen-topic law syllabus. What separates them is eligibility: two years in legal affairs against five, an age ceiling of 30 against 35, and Pay Level 10 against Level 11.
Assistant Surgeon (Veterinary): one paper, 100 marks, 2 hours
| Part | What it asks | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Profession related multiple choice questions | 50 | 50 |
| B | Short questions: technical definitions, dose, route, names of drugs | 10 | 20, at 2 each |
| Subjective clinical questions | 6 | 30, at 5 each | |
| Total | 66 | 100 | |
The only gazetted entry with no general studies section at all: no general awareness, no reasoning, no arithmetic, no English paper. The whole hundred marks is veterinary practice and half of it is written. Note how specific Part B is, "technical definations/dose/ route/name of drugs": doses and routes are asked directly.
None of the three papers states negative marking, a qualifying percentage, or how many marks the interview carries against them.
Syllabus
ITBP publishes a full topic list for two of the three professional papers and nothing for the general sections. Both published lists appear below as the Force gives them, with the bare headings expanded.
Paper-II, Civil Engineering: the nineteen topics ITBP publishes
| # | Topic as ITBP names it | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| a | Building Materials: timber, bricks, cement, cement mortar, concrete | Properties, testing and grading of each; cement types and setting; mortar and concrete mix design; workability, curing, strength testing |
| b | Solid Mechanics | Stress and strain, elastic constants, bending moment and shear force, torsion, columns and struts, principal stresses |
| c | Structural Analysis | Determinate and indeterminate structures, trusses, influence lines, slope deflection, moment distribution, arches |
| d | Design of Steel Structures | Connections, tension and compression members, beams, plate girders, limit state design |
| e | Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures | Limit state and working stress design, beams, slabs, columns, footings, retaining walls, masonry design |
| f | Construction practice, planning and management | Construction equipment, scheduling, CPM and PERT, cost estimation, quality control, contracts and tendering, site safety |
| g | Fluid Machines, open channel flow, pipe flow | Fluid properties, hydrostatics, continuity and energy equations, laminar and turbulent flow, losses in pipes, uniform and gradually varied flow, hydraulic jump |
| h | Hydraulic Machines and Hydro Power | Pumps and turbines, specific speed, cavitation, hydro power plant layout and components |
| i | Hydrology and design of hydraulic structures | Precipitation, runoff, hydrographs, floods and flood routing, dams, spillways, weirs and barrages, canal design |
| j | Water Resources Engineering | Irrigation methods, crop water requirement, reservoir planning, groundwater |
| k | Water Supply Engineering | Demand estimation, sources, quality standards, treatment units, distribution networks |
| l | Waste Water Engineering | Sewerage, sewage characteristics, treatment units, sludge handling, disposal standards |
| m | Solid Waste Engineering | Generation, collection, transport, processing and disposal; landfill design |
| n | Environmental Engineering and Green building | Air and noise pollution, standards, green building rating and design principles |
| o | Soil Mechanics | Classification, permeability, seepage, effective stress, consolidation, shear strength, compaction |
| p | Foundation Engineering | Bearing capacity, shallow and deep foundations, piles, earth pressure, slope stability |
| q | Surveying | Chain, compass and plane table surveying, levelling, theodolite, contouring, curves, total station and GPS |
| r | Transportation Engineering | Highway geometric design, pavement design, traffic engineering, materials, railway and airport engineering in outline |
| s | Preparation of layout plans and building drawings: plan, elevation, section | Drawing to scale by hand, building byelaws, reading and preparing a working drawing |
Topic (s) is a drawing requirement inside a written paper, and the one item on the list that cannot be revised from a theory book. And topics (g) to (n) are seven of the nineteen: for a Force whose works are at altitude and remote from municipal services, water supply, waste water and solid waste are not peripheral.
Paper-II for the legal entries: the sixteen topics ITBP publishes
- The Constitution of India
- The Civil and Criminal Procedure Codes
- The Indian Penal Code
- The Law of Evidence
- The law on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances
- The law related to protection of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes
- The law relating to electricity theft
- The law related to Cyber Crime
- The law of contract and partnership
- The law of Motor Accident Claims
- The law of Arbitration and Conciliation
- Hindu Law and Muslim Law
- The law on Transfer of Property
- The law related to Domestic Violence
- General Rules, civil and criminal, and judgment writing
- Various rules pertaining to the Central Civil Services
Three of those are not on a standard judicial services syllabus and tell a candidate what the job involves. Electricity theft and cyber crime appear because the Force prosecutes and investigates them. Central Civil Services rules appear because a Judge Attorney's daily work is departmental: charge sheets and inquiries under the CCS (Classification, Control and Appeal) and CCS (Conduct) Rules. And judgment writing is a skill, tested in Paper-II's forty subjective marks.
The general sections of Paper-I
ITBP publishes no topic list for these; they are set at graduate level.
General awareness: Indian history and the freedom movement; geography, with the Himalayan belt and the border states weighted; polity and the Constitution; economy; general science; current affairs of roughly the last year, with national security and defence weighted; the Central Armed Police Forces and ITBP's own history and deployment facts.
General Intelligence or Reasoning: series, analogy, classification, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, syllogism, statement and conclusion, seating arrangement, puzzles, data sufficiency, non-verbal figure questions.
Numerical Aptitude: number system, simplification, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, interest, time and work, time speed and distance, mensuration, elementary algebra and trigonometry, data interpretation.
General English: at the engineering entry, 25 objective marks of grammar, vocabulary, error spotting and comprehension. At the legal entries, 50 marks of which half is subjective, so precis, essay or letter writing and comprehension in your own words as well as objective grammar.
The veterinary paper
ITBP publishes no topic list, only the structure. Working from the qualification, the examinable ground is the B.V.Sc and A.H. curriculum: anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and toxicology, pathology, microbiology and parasitology, medicine, surgery and radiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, preventive medicine and epidemiology, animal nutrition, livestock production and management, and public health. That is read off the eligibility, not published by ITBP. The structure does say that doses, routes and drug names are asked directly for 20 marks, with six clinical cases in prose for 30.
Eligibility Criteria
Four gazetted entries, four rows in ITBP's Scheme of Recruitment. The most striking number is in the height column.
Physical standards
| Entry | Height, male | Height, female | Chest, male only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant Commandant (Engineer) | 165 cm | 157 cm | 81 cm, expanded 86 cm |
| Assistant Surgeon (AC / Veterinary) | 157.5 cm | 142 cm | 77 cm, expanded 82 cm |
| Judge Attorney (Assistant Commandant) | 165 cm | 157 cm | 81 cm, expanded 86 cm |
| Deputy Judge Attorney General (Deputy Commandant) | 165 cm | 157 cm | 81 cm, expanded 86 cm |
The veterinary entry carries the lowest height standard anywhere in ITBP's Scheme of Recruitment, not just among officers but across all thirty one posts. Against the rest of the Force:
| Standard | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Gazetted entries other than veterinary | 165 cm | 157 cm |
| General category constable | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| Scheduled Tribe constable | 162.5 cm | 150 cm |
| Lowest constable standard, ST candidates from the North-Eastern States and Left Wing Extremism affected districts | 160 cm | 147.5 cm |
| Assistant Surgeon (Veterinary) | 157.5 cm | 142 cm |
A woman entering as a veterinary officer may be 5.5 cm shorter than the shortest woman ITBP will take as a constable. ITBP publishes the figure without comment, so a height that rules you out of every other ITBP entry does not rule you out of this one.
Physical efficiency test
| Event | Engineer and Veterinary, male | Legal, male | Engineer and Veterinary, female | Legal, female |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 m | 16 sec | 18 sec | 18 sec | 20 sec |
| 800 m | 3 min 45 sec | 4 min 30 sec | 4 min 45 sec | 5 min |
| Long jump | 3.5 m | 3.5 m | 3.0 m | 3.0 m |
| Shot put, 7.26 kg | 4.5 m | 4.5 m | Not prescribed | Not prescribed |
Three chances at each jump and throw. The engineer and the veterinary surgeon run faster than the lawyer, by two seconds over 100 m and forty five seconds over 800 m for men, and the veterinary entry pairs the lowest height standard in ITBP with the highest running standard among the gazetted entries. All of it is qualifying; none of it contributes a mark.
Age
Not exceeding 30 for Assistant Commandant (Engineer) and Judge Attorney; not exceeding 35 for Assistant Surgeon (Veterinary) and Deputy Judge Attorney General. No lower bound is stated; the qualification supplies it. The relaxations are the same across all four: up to five years for a government servant, five years for SC and ST candidates, three for OBC, and reservation including for ex-servicemen per Government of India instructions.
Educational qualification
Engineer: a Degree in Civil Engineering from an institution recognised by the central or a state government. ITBP allows a candidate awaiting a result, or intending to sit the qualifying examination, to apply; admission is provisional and proof of passing must be produced at the time of interview.
Veterinary: a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry from a recognised university, and registration with the Veterinary Council of India, which is a separate requirement from the degree.
Judge Attorney and Deputy Judge Attorney General: a Degree in Law from a recognised university or equivalent, and the candidate must be qualified for enrolment as an Advocate. Desirable at both: a postgraduate law degree and experience of trials under special laws relating to the Armed Forces, one year for Judge Attorney and two for the Deputy Judge Attorney General.
Work experience
For Engineer and Veterinary, ITBP's experience column says only "Weightage for work experience is being given in interview." For Judge Attorney it says "Two years' minimum experience in Legal Affairs" and for Deputy Judge Attorney General "Five years' experience in Legal Affairs". The distinction matters: a fresh engineering or veterinary graduate can apply and just scores lower at interview, but a newly enrolled advocate cannot apply at all until two years are up.
Medical
ITBP publishes a separate visual standards table for direct entry gazetted officers:
- Uncorrected distance vision 6/6 or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye; near vision N6 and N9
- Refraction limits: hypermetropia up to +4.00 D and myopia up to −4.00 D, including cylinder
- Colour vision CP III by Ishihara plates; binocular vision required; a colour blind person is not eligible, and a serving person later found colour blind is boarded out
- Lasik is permitted for gazetted officers only, between 18 and 35, with the surgery at least six months old, an axial length under 26 mm, corneal thickness of 425 microns and a pre-Lasik error up to 6 D. ITBP states that "no radial keratotomy (RK) or any other refractive surgery is permitted except Lasik". At other ranks no correction for distance is permitted at all
The general standards apply too: no knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint; at least 14 dental points; chest expansion of at least 5 cm with ease; sound hearing and no stammer; tattoos only as a religious symbol or figure or a name, only on the left forearm or the back of the hand, and only smaller than a quarter of that part. Post-operative waiting periods run from one month after a tonsillectomy to six months after abdominal or pelvic surgery. Indian citizenship is required, with a character and antecedents verification.
Selection Process
All four gazetted entries share one stage list, and it is the only list in ITBP's Scheme of Recruitment that contains an interview.
| # | Stage | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Document verification and Physical Standards Test | Eligibility and measurement, pass or fail |
| 2 | Physical Efficiency Test | Qualifying, pass or fail |
| 3 | Written examination | Scored |
| 4 | Interview | Scored, weight not published |
| 5 | Detailed Medical Examination | Pass or fail |
| 6 | Review Medical Examination | Only if the DME finds a candidate unfit |
Document verification is first, paired with the PST. At the constable entries a height bar screens people at the gate and documents are checked later. Here the qualification is the whole basis of eligibility, so ITBP checks the degree, the Veterinary Council registration or the years in practice before anything else, and measures the candidate at the same appearance. There is no height bar in the gazetted sequence at all.
The interview
No constable or Head Constable entry in ITBP has one. All four gazetted entries do, and for Engineer and Veterinary ITBP states what it weighs there: "Weightage for work experience is being given in interview." So a candidate with three years in a consultancy or a clinic should not treat that experience as irrelevant simply because ITBP admits freshers. At the two legal entries experience is not interview weightage because it is already an eligibility condition.
ITBP does not publish how many marks the interview carries, or its proportion of the final merit against the written papers.
The ordering has one consequence for engineering candidates. ITBP lets a candidate awaiting a result apply, with proof of passing due at the time of interview. That is stage four, months in, so a candidate who has not passed by then loses the candidature there rather than at the start.
The medical, and the review
Gazetted officers are examined against ITBP's own visual standards table, which permits refraction up to plus or minus 4.00 D and permits Lasik within the published limits, for gazetted officers only. A candidate declared unfit at the detailed medical examination is entitled to the review medical examination at stage six, the only appeal ITBP publishes anywhere in this process.
There is no trade test and no skill test: the professional capacity is tested in the written paper and probed at the interview. And Assistant Commandant (General Duty) is not filled through this process at all; it comes through the UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination, for which ITBP conducts only the physical and medical stages.
Salary
Three of the four gazetted entries are Pay Level 10, entry pay ₹56,100. The fourth, Deputy Judge Attorney General, is Pay Level 11, entry pay ₹67,700. Both are ITBP's own figures, from a pay matrix page headed "Pay Matrix as on March 2017 (Liable to change due to administrative reasons)".
| Rank | Pay Level | Entry pay |
|---|---|---|
| Constable, every trade | Level 3 | ₹21,700 |
| Head Constable, every trade | Level 4 | ₹25,500 |
| Assistant Sub-Inspector | Level 5 | ₹29,200 |
| Sub-Inspector | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
| Inspector | Level 7 | ₹44,900 |
| Assistant Commandant | Level 10 | ₹56,100 |
| Deputy Commandant | Level 11 | ₹67,700 |
Note the jump. ITBP's matrix goes from Inspector at Level 7 straight to Assistant Commandant at Level 10, with no direct entry at Levels 8 or 9, so a direct entry gazetted officer starts ₹11,200 a month above the top of the subordinate ranks.
Between the two legal entries the gap is ₹11,600 a month in basic pay at entry, plus a rank, for three more years of practice and five more years of age. They sit the same papers, so an advocate with five years behind them who applies at the Assistant Commandant level rather than the Deputy Commandant level has given that up for nothing. Check which of the two an advertisement is for.
On top of basic pay
ITBP publishes no allowance schedule, so this is the standard central government and Central Armed Police Force structure, worth considerably more in absolute terms at Levels 10 and 11: dearness allowance revised each January and July, house rent allowance by city class or official accommodation, transport allowance, ration money, risk and hardship allowance at the notified rate, uniform allowance at the gazetted rate, and the high altitude and special compensatory allowances that a Force deployed between 9,000 ft and 18,700 ft attracts.
Non-cash: official accommodation, an orderly entitlement at gazetted rank, canteen, medical cover, leave travel concession and group insurance. Central Armed Police Force officers are also eligible for deputation to central police organisations, the National Security Guard and United Nations peacekeeping, which the subordinate ranks are not.
Pension and promotion
New appointments fall under the National Pension System, the officer contributing 10 per cent of basic pay and dearness allowance and the government 14 per cent, with gratuity and leave encashment separate.
From Assistant Commandant the ladder runs to Deputy Commandant at Level 11, then Second in Command, Commandant, Deputy Inspector General and above. The specialist cadres are narrower by their nature: an engineering, veterinary or legal officer is promoted within their own stream, and the Force's very senior command appointments sit on the General Duty side.
How to Apply
Applications go only through recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. There is no offline route and no other portal. ITBP also publishes this warning:
...no fee is charged from candidates to qualify in any stage of recruitment, selection in ITBP or while joining the Force. Do not fall prey to such fraudsters posing himself as member of the Force or otherwise and ask you for money.
Creating the account
The account comes first and the application second. ITBP calls the registered e-mail address unchangeable, and every later communication goes to it, so pick one you will still be reading in two years. Name, e-mail and date of birth cannot be edited after registration; everything else can be corrected up to submission and nothing at all after it.
The fee
Assistant Commandant is a Group A post, so the fee is ₹400; Group B is ₹200 and Group C ₹100. The exemption runs: "No fee is being charged from candidates belonging to SC/ST community, Ex-serviceman and women." Read it carefully. Every woman candidate is exempt, whatever her category, as is every ex-serviceman. Payment is online only, and a duplicate payment against one application number is refunded automatically within three or four days.
What is uploaded
- Photograph and signature, as
.jpgor.jpegonly. Colour or black and white are both fine; poor quality is a ground for rejection. The site previews the upload and allows unlimited re-uploads before submission. - No certificates. Nothing is uploaded at registration or application; every document named in the notification is checked in person at document verification.
In any correspondence ITBP asks you to quote the post, the advertisement number, the registered e-mail address, your name, father's name, date of birth and the roll or reference number. Keep the fee receipt: it is the evidence the Force asks for if a payment is disputed. The submitted application can be printed from My Applications at any time, including after the closing date. Helpline 011-24369482 and 011-24369483, 09:30 to 18:00 Monday to Friday.
Participating Institutes
There is one recruiting authority. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, raised on 24 October 1962, and it recruits its gazetted specialist entries itself rather than through SSC, which conducts the Constable (General Duty) examination for eight forces at once.
Where the Force works
ITBP guards the India-China border from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh, a frontage the Force gives as 3,488 km. Its own description of the posting:
ITBPF deployments range from 9000 ft to 18700 ft in picturesque and rugged mountain terrain which require a certain degree of toughness.
Beyond border guarding the Force lists high altitude and counter-terrorist operations, VIP security, disaster relief, mountaineering, civic action programmes and medical camps.
The five Frontier Headquarters
| Frontier | Headquarters | Telephone |
|---|---|---|
| Northern | Seemadwar, District Dehradun, Uttarakhand 248146 | 135-2762976 |
| Eastern | Sheela Complex, Vidhan Sabha Marg, Hazratganj, Lucknow 226001 | 522-2239424 |
| Central | Trilochan Nagar, Trilanga, near Shahpura, Bhopal 462039 | 755-2569823 |
| North-East | AP Old Secretariat Building, Cantt Area, G. S. Road, Shillong 793001 | 364-2224591 |
| North-West | Seema Nagar, near the airport, Chandigarh 160003 | 172-2637998 |
Two of these sit away from the border their Frontier is named for: Eastern Frontier headquarters is in Lucknow and Central Frontier headquarters is in Bhopal. The Directorate General is at Block II, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110003.
Exam Centres
ITBP publishes no standing list of examination cities. The centre is named on the admit card for each stage, and the stages are not all held in the same place.
- The physical and documentation stages are held at recruitment centres the Force runs itself, normally at a Frontier Headquarters or a battalion location under it. Those are the five addresses listed under Participating institutes, and a candidate may be called to a Frontier a long way from home.
- The computer based written test runs on a commercial test centre network, which is why the home page carries a separate mock test link, a separate admit card link and a separate helpline for it.
What to carry
ITBP collects no document online, so the document folder is the one thing that cannot be replaced on the day. Carry the printed online application, the admit card, the matriculation certificate for date of birth, the educational and technical certificates the post requires, the category certificate in the prescribed central government format, and the experience certificate the technical qualification column names. On category certificates the Force's standing instruction is:
Candidates desirous of availing SC/ST/OBC (NON creamy layers) EWS benefits at the time of recruitments or at a later stage shall produce a valid certificate to that effect at the time of DV/DME/RME.
Important Dates
No gazetted advertisement is live, one 2025 recruitment is unfinished, and the officer stages ITBP ran most recently were for a UPSC examination rather than its own. That is the position as at 12 September 2026, from ITBP's own home page.
| Notice on the ITBP recruitment home page | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Download Admit Card for PET/PST -2025 (Only for AC/GD UPSC)" | ITBP conducted the 2025 physical stages for candidates of the UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination. That is the General Duty route, not a direct ITBP entry |
| "Download Admit Card for PET/PST -2025 (Only for SPLT. MEDICAL OFFICER (DC) / SUPER SPECIALIST MEDICAL OFFICER (2I/C))" | ITBP has run separate medical officer recruitments at Deputy Commandant and Second in Command level, neither of which appears in the Scheme of Recruitment |
| "Assistant Commandant (Telecommunication) recruitment- 2025", named in the standing notice as awaiting its written test | A gazetted telecommunication entry exists and is mid-process, and it is not among the thirty one posts in the Scheme of Recruitment |
The standing notice reads: "Process of Written Examination / Computer Based Test (CBT) of ... Assistant Commandant (Telecommunication) recruitment- 2025 ... is under active consideration and same will be conveyed to all eligible candidates, in due course of time."
So the scheme table is not the whole of ITBP's officer recruitment: it covers the four direct entries, while the home page shows at least three more, for which the advertisement for the cycle is the only source of standards.
| Event | Position as at 12 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Live advertisement for any of the four direct gazetted entries | None published |
| Assistant Commandant (Telecommunication) 2025 | Written test not held, "under active consideration" |
| AC/GD UPSC physical stages | Admit cards issued during 2025 |
| News and results panels on the recruitment site | "Currently there are no news to display", "Currently there are no results to display" |
Neither route publishes an ITBP calendar. For the direct gazetted entries an advertisement appears on the recruitment website when a vacancy arises, which for small specialist cadres may be years apart. For General Duty the timetable is the Union Public Service Commission's annual CAPF (AC) examination, and nothing on ITBP's site will announce it.
So register at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in in advance, and get the registration you need: Veterinary Council of India registration for a veterinary candidate, enrolment as an Advocate and then two or five years of practice for a legal one. None of it can be arranged inside an application window.
Admit Card
Admit cards are issued stage by stage, not once for the whole recruitment, and only from the account created at registration.
- Log in at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in with the registered e-mail address and password.
- Open My Application.
- Download the admit card for the stage now open, and print it.
There is no public download link, and ITBP has had to say so in capitals on its home page: "FOR DOWNLOADING ADMIT CARD ... MUST LOG IN THEIR ACCOUNT IN ITBP RECRUITMENT OFFICIAL WEBSITE AND DOWNLOAD THEIR ADMIT CARD VIA MY APPLICATION."
The home page links as at 12 September 2026 cover PET and PST, the computer based test, the trade and skill tests, and documentation and the DME; several name their cycle, which is how you can tell a 2022-23 recruitment is still issuing admit cards.
Before the written test, sit the mock test on the same home page. It uses the interface the real test uses. A separate helpline, +91 95132 51988, handles admit card download problems and the objection window. If the account will not open, ITBP's own advice is to check the browser first, enable JavaScript and disable the pop-up blocker, then write to comdtrect[at]itbp[dot]gov[dot]in with the details so it can call back.
Result
ITBP publishes very little in the way of results. As at 12 September 2026 the NEWS and RESULTS panels on the recruitment home page read "Currently there are no news to display" and "Currently there are no results to display".
In practice a stage outcome reaches a candidate as the appearance of the next stage's admit card inside the account at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. There is often no separate result list and no SMS beyond one telling you to check the site.
For the computer based test ITBP does run a short objection window, announced on the home page with a link to the answer key and the helpline number beside it. No advertisement is live for any of the four direct gazetted entries, so no result is due for them; the Assistant Commandant (Telecommunication) recruitment of 2025 is listed as still awaiting its written test.
Cut Off
ITBP publishes no cut-off marks for the posts it recruits itself, and has not done so in any past cycle. Nothing is released after a recruitment closes, and there is no archive to look in.
The structure is on the record instead. For the gazetted entries two stages are scored, the written examination and the interview; the physical standards test, the physical efficiency test and both medicals are pass or fail. ITBP does not publish how the two scored stages are weighted against each other, and for Engineer and Veterinary it adds that "Weightage for work experience is being given in interview" without saying how much.
For a sense of competitive pressure, the Union Public Service Commission publishes cut-offs for its CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination, the General Duty officer route into the same Force, at upsc.gov.in after each cycle. It is a different examination for a different cadre, so read it as background rather than as a target.
Preparation Tips
1. Decide which door you are walking through
Three specialist doors lead into this rank directly: civil engineering, veterinary medicine and law. The General Duty door is the UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination, a completely separate preparation with its own syllabus and calendar. Confusing the two costs a year.
2. Engineers: Paper-II is written, not ticked
One hundred marks of subjective Civil Engineering in two hours, fifteen questions, half the paper in five ten-mark answers. A graduate whose examination habit is multiple choice has to relearn writing a structured answer with a diagram, an assumption list and a worked calculation inside twenty minutes. Practise timed long-form answers.
3. Engineers: the two parts of the syllabus people drop
Topic (s), "preparation of layout plans and building drawings (plan, elevation, section)", is a drawing task in a written paper and cannot be revised from a theory book. Draw one by hand, to scale, before the examination. And seven of the nineteen topics are water and environment, over a third of the published syllabus and the part a structures-oriented graduate is most likely to have let go.
4. Lawyers: twenty five marks of Paper-I are written English
General English is 50 of Paper-I's 100 marks, half objective and half subjective. Precis writing, comprehension answered in your own words and clear formal prose are what is tested, and they are exactly what a candidate preparing from an objective grammar book never practises.
5. Lawyers: three topics tell you what the job is
Electricity theft, cyber crime and the Central Civil Services rules are not on a judicial services syllabus and they are on this one. The CCS (Conduct) and CCS (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules are a Judge Attorney's daily working law, since the job is more departmental proceedings than courts. And write practice judgments: Paper-II has forty subjective marks, and ITBP lists judgment writing as a topic in its own right.
6. Veterinary candidates: no general studies, and know the doses cold
No general awareness, no reasoning, no arithmetic, no English section. One hundred marks of profession: fifty objective, twenty on definitions, doses, routes and drug names, thirty on six subjective clinical questions. Drug names, standard doses by species and body weight and routes of administration are directly examinable, and they are the detail a graduate lets slip after leaving college. Check the height row too: 157.5 cm for men and 142 cm for women is the lowest standard in ITBP's entire scheme.
7. Everyone: the interview, the shot put and the Lasik rule
All four entries have an interview, and for Engineer and Veterinary work experience carries weightage in it, so bring documented experience and be ready to talk about your own professional work. The physical test differs by entry, and all four include a 7.26 kg shot put to 4.5 m for men, a technique event with three chances that a candidate who has never held a shot will waste. And Lasik is permitted for gazetted officers only, six months or more before and within ITBP's published limits; no other refractive surgery is permitted at all.
Sample Papers
ITBP releases no previous question papers. There is no archive on the recruitment website, no sample paper against any post, and no answer key left up after an objection window closes. Anything sold as a previous year ITBP paper is a reconstruction.
The one practice resource the Force publishes is a mock test of the computer based test, on the home page at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. It rehearses the interface, not the questions, and goes up when a computer based test is near.
What ITBP does publish for these entries is better than a paper: the full nineteen-topic Civil Engineering list and the sixteen-topic law list, both in the syllabus section. For the objective general sections of Paper-I the closest published practice is any graduate-level general studies paper. For the subjective halves there is no substitute for writing timed answers and having them marked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ITBP recruit Assistant Commandant (General Duty) directly?
No. That cadre is filled through the UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandant) examination; ITBP conducts only the physical and medical stages, which is why its portal has carried an admit card link marked "Only for AC/GD UPSC". The four entries ITBP recruits itself are Assistant Commandant (Engineer), Assistant Surgeon (AC / Veterinary), Judge Attorney and Deputy Judge Attorney General.
What is the salary of an ITBP Assistant Commandant?
Pay Level 10, entry pay ₹56,100 for the Engineer, Veterinary and Judge Attorney entries. The Deputy Judge Attorney General is a Deputy Commandant at Level 11, entry pay ₹67,700. ITBP's matrix has no direct entry at Levels 8 or 9, so a gazetted entrant starts ₹11,200 a month above an Inspector at Level 7.
Why is the height standard for the veterinary entry so much lower?
ITBP publishes the figure without explanation. Assistant Surgeon (AC / Veterinary) requires 157.5 cm for men and 142 cm for women, against 165 cm and 157 cm at the other entries and below even the 160 cm and 147.5 cm for Scheduled Tribe constable candidates from the North-Eastern States. A height that rules a candidate out of every other ITBP entry does not rule them out of this one.
Is the physical test the same for all four gazetted entries?
No. Engineer and Veterinary candidates run 100 m in 16 seconds and 800 m in 3 minutes 45 seconds for men, against 18 seconds and 4 minutes 30 seconds at the legal entries. All four require a 3.5 m long jump for men, 3.0 m for women, and a 7.26 kg shot put to 4.5 m for men only.
What is the exam pattern for ITBP Assistant Commandant (Engineer)?
Two papers of 100 marks each, two hours each. Paper-I is objective: general awareness, reasoning, numerical aptitude and general English, 25 marks each. Paper-II is subjective Civil Engineering: fifteen questions, five at 2 marks, five at 8 and five at 10, drawn from a nineteen-topic syllabus ITBP publishes in full, ending with the preparation of layout plans and building drawings.
What do the legal entries sit?
Two papers of 100 marks. Paper-I is General Intelligence 25, general awareness and general knowledge 25, and General English 50, half objective and half subjective. Paper-II is the professional subject: 60 objective questions for 60 marks and 10 subjective for 40, on a sixteen-topic law syllabus that includes electricity theft, cyber crime, judgment writing and the Central Civil Services rules alongside the standard codes. Both legal posts sit the same papers; what separates them is that the Judge Attorney is an Assistant Commandant at Level 10, capped at 30 and needing two years in legal affairs, while the Deputy Judge Attorney General is a Deputy Commandant at Level 11, capped at 35 and needing five.
Can a fresh graduate apply?
For Engineer and Veterinary, yes: experience is not an eligibility condition, only "weightage ... in interview", and an engineering candidate awaiting a result may apply with proof of passing produced at the interview. For the two legal entries, no: two and five years of legal experience are hard conditions.
What is in the veterinary paper?
One hundred marks in two hours and no general studies at all: 50 profession-related multiple choice questions, 10 short questions on definitions, dose, route and drug names for 20 marks, and 6 subjective clinical questions for 30. ITBP publishes no topic list, so the working syllabus is the B.V.Sc and A.H. curriculum.
Is there an interview?
Yes, and the gazetted entries are the only ITBP entries with one. No constable or Head Constable recruitment in the Scheme of Recruitment includes an interview. ITBP does not publish how many marks it carries or its weight against the written papers.
How much is the fee?
₹400, these being Group A posts. ITBP charges nothing to SC and ST candidates, ex-servicemen and women of every category. Payment is online only.
Does ITBP accept candidates who have had Lasik?
For gazetted officers only: performed at least six months earlier, axial length under 26 mm, corneal thickness 425 microns, pre-Lasik error up to 6 D, entry age 18 to 35. "No radial keratotomy (RK) or any other refractive surgery is permitted except Lasik." Other ranks are not permitted any correction for distance vision.
When is the next ITBP Assistant Commandant recruitment?
No advertisement for any of the four direct gazetted entries is live as at 12 September 2026. ITBP's standing notice lists an Assistant Commandant (Telecommunication) recruitment 2025 as awaiting its written test, and that post is not among the thirty one in the Scheme of Recruitment. There is no annual calendar for gazetted entries, and for specialist cadres a vacancy may be years apart. For General Duty, watch the Union Public Service Commission instead.
