KVS PGT Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
97 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
A Post Graduate Teacher in a Kendriya Vidyalaya teaches Classes XI and XII in one subject. KVS runs 1,288 schools, three of them abroad, so a PGT can be posted to any of them.
The latest round is Recruitment Notification 01/2025, which CBSE ran for KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti together. After Corrigendum 3 it lists 1,606 PGT posts in KVS across twelve subjects. Tier-1 and Tier-2 are over, Tier-2 results came out subject by subject between 17 August and 5 September 2026, and shortlisted candidates are waiting for interview dates.

Exam Pattern
Tier-1 (screening)
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Reasoning | 20 | 60 |
| Numeric Ability | 20 | 60 |
| Basic Computer Literacy | 20 | 60 |
| General Knowledge | 20 | 60 |
| English | 10 | 30 |
| One other Indian language | 10 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 300 |
OMR, two hours, at postgraduate level for PGTs. Each question is worth 3 marks and a wrong answer costs 1. Tier-1 marks only decide who sits Tier-2, at ten candidates per vacancy in each category.
Tier-2 (subject paper)
Two and a half hours, 100 marks: 60 one-mark objective questions (0.25 off per wrong answer) and 10 descriptive questions worth 40 marks together. Hindi and English medium.
Interview
100 marks. Candidates are called at three per vacancy. Final merit is 85% Tier-2 and 15% interview.
Syllabus
Tier-1 is the same general paper for every post in the drive. The language part offers Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu; you pick one on the form and cannot change it.
Tier-2 is your subject at postgraduate level. The notification says the detailed Tier-2 syllabus goes on the KVS and NVS websites under Recruitment rather than in the notification itself.
Eligibility Criteria
- A master's degree in the subject with at least 50% in aggregate, or an NCTE-recognised integrated postgraduate course with a B.Ed. component.
- B.Ed. with 50%, or a three-year integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed., or a four-year integrated degree with B.Ed., all NCTE-recognised.
- Able to teach in both Hindi and English.
- Upper age limit 40. Relaxation: SC/ST 5 years, OBC (NCL) 3, women 10, PwBD 10 to 15, regular KVS staff 5 to 10.
Subject rules matter. For Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Economics, History, Geography and Biology, you must also have studied the subject at graduation. Biology accepts Biological or Life Science. Commerce bars an M.Com. in Applied or Business Economics. Bio-Technology accepts Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry, Life Science, Bio-Science or Genetics. Computer Science needs an M.Sc. (CS/IT), MCA, or M.E./M.Tech. (CS/IT) with 50%, plus the B.Ed.
Corrigendum 2 of 4 December 2025 dropped the graduation-level condition for KVS PGT English and Hindi, so the rule now matches NVS. CTET is not needed for any PGT post.
Selection Process
- Tier-1 screening.
- Tier-2 in the subject.
- Interview.
- Merit list at 85:15, document verification and medical.
KVS and NVS draw from one combined merit list for PGT. If you are on both, you fill a KVS or NVS preference online and get one post only. There is no waiting list.
Salary
Pay Level 8, ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100, plus DA, HRA and the other central government allowances.
How to Apply
Online only, through the CBSE-run portal linked from the CBSE recruitment page. Fee: ₹1,500 exam fee plus ₹500 processing fee. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen pay only the ₹500. One fee covers the same post in KVS and NVS. Within PGT you choose one subject.
Exam Centres
Exam cities are allotted at random according to applicant numbers, and cannot be changed. The city slip appears in the candidate login about 15 days before each tier; the admit card two days before.

Preparation Tips
Tier-1 punishes guessing: a wrong answer costs a third of what a right one earns. Leave a question you cannot narrow down. The 20 computer literacy questions carry as many marks as general knowledge, so do not leave them to chance. For Tier-2, practise writing short answers in your subject, because 40 of the 100 marks are descriptive. Biology, Maths and English drew over 40,000 applicants each.
