MP Lab Technician Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
114 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
MP Lab Technician posts are filled by the Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board, Bhopal (Madhyapradesh Karmchari Chayan Mandal, formerly the Professional Examination Board). Under clause 3(2) of its rules, every state department and institution must recruit through the Board; doing it any other way is prohibited.
There's no separate Lab Technician exam. The post is one of 61 post codes in the Combined Recruitment Test 2026 for Staff Nurse, Paramedical Staff and other equivalent posts under Group-5, held from Wednesday 15 April 2026. The test covers 10 employers and 373 posts, with 19 question papers lettered A to S. Lab Technician is post code 24, with 2 posts.
The laboratory family is wider than the designation:
| Designation | Post codes | Posts | Question paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Attendant | 02, 11, 12, 23, 47, 48 | 36 | B |
| Lab Technician | 24 | 2 | C |
| Lab Assistant | 33 | 2 | C |
| Cath Lab Technician | 36 | 1 | I |
Each paper is 100 marks: 25 general and 75 on the technical trade. Lab Technician sits paper C. Fees are Rs 500 per question paper (Rs 250 for reserved candidates of Madhya Pradesh), so applying across two paper codes means two papers and two fees.
Don't confuse it with the Board's Paramedical Combined Recruitment Test 2025 (Physiotherapist, Counsellor, Pharmacist Grade-2, Netra Sahayak and O.T. Technician, no Lab Technician) or the Nursing Officer and Sister Tutor Recruitment Test 2026, held from 15 May 2026. Each has its own rulebook, window and fee.

MP Lab Technician Details
Exam Pattern
| Part | Subjects | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 6 | General Knowledge, General Hindi, General English, General Mathematics, General Science and General Aptitude | 25 |
| 7 | Technical trade | 75 |
| Total | 100 | |
The split follows the General Administration Department's amended circular 74 of 16 February 2015 (clause 8, Chapter 4).
| Mode | Online, computer based, at a Board centre |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Marking | +1 correct, −0.25 wrong (clause 3.8(i)) |
| Language | Hindi and English. If they differ, Hindi governs, except in science and technical papers, where English governs (clause 3.8-A(B)) |
| Lab Technician paper | Code C |
Which paper you sit depends on the post code:
| Paper | Designations it serves | Post codes |
|---|---|---|
| B | Lab Attendant, Dresser Grade-2, Dissection Hall Attendant, Patti Bandhak (Dresser), Dresser, Dark Room Attendant | 02, 03, 04, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 23, 27, 47, 48, 59 |
| C | Technician Assistant, Technical Assistant, Technician, Lab Technician, Lab Assistant | 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 24, 25, 26, 33, 43, 44, 45, 46 |
| I | Cath Lab Technician | 36 |
Deleted questions
Nobody gets a free mark. Under clause 3.8-A(C) everyone is rescaled in proportion to their marks on the surviving questions. The rulebook's examples: 90 of the remaining 98 on a 100-question paper becomes 90 × 100 / 98 = 91.83; 140 of 148 on a 150-question paper becomes 141.89; 190 of 198 on a 200-question paper becomes 191.91. Two decimal places, under Board order Mandal/5-P-1/48/5279/2016 of 29 August 2016. A raw 49 becomes exactly 50 if two questions go.
Normalization
Two shifts means the Normalised Equi-Percentile method (order of 13 February 2025). Your percentile within your shift is:
Pij = (number of candidates in shift j having proportionate scores less than or equal to Xij) / Nj × 100
rounded to six decimal places, and shifts are merged on that. Ties go first to proportionate marks. The qualifying floor is checked against the proportionate score, not the percentile.
At the end, the screen shows your RAW Score and you must type it with a password before Submit works (clause 3.8(ii)).
Syllabus
General block, 25 marks

- Clinical Pathology: urine (physical, chemical, microscopic), stool, semen and CSF examination.
- Parasitology: parasites in blood, stool and urine.

- Cytology: techniques, equipment, fixatives and staining.

For comparison, paper B (Lab Attendant) is just Higher Secondary (10+2) level syllabus in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and paper I (Cath Lab Technician) is separate again.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualification (clause 9.1(a))
- 10+2 plus the relevant diploma (Medical Laboratory Technology for this post); or
- a higher qualification; or
- the minimum qualification in the requisitioning department's own recruitment rules.
The employer's rules govern, and the qualification must be complete on the date you apply. The Board checks nothing at application. If the department later finds you short, clause 9.2 rejects the candidature and it's not transferable to another post. For post code 24 the employer is Dr Laxminarayan Pandey Government Medical College, Ratlam.
A note under clause 9.4 makes live registration with an MP employment exchange compulsory, and reservation and age certificates must come from an MP-recognised authority.
Age
| Candidate | Age on 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|
| Minimum, everybody | 18 years |
| Maximum, open competition | 40 years |
| Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class candidates of Madhya Pradesh | 45 years |
| All women candidates, reserved or unreserved | 45 years |
| Serving employees of government departments, corporations, boards, commissions, autonomous bodies and the Home Guard | 45 years |
| Candidates with disability | 45 years |
| Economically Weaker Section candidates | No age relaxation at all. A General Administration Department circular of 2 February 2022 provides none |
| Participants in the inter-caste marriage incentive scheme of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Classes Welfare Department | Five years above the upper limit, under a General Administration Department memo of 29 June 1985 |
| Ceiling | Taking every relaxation together, 45 years for any category, leaving aside contractual employees and the categories named in rule 14 |
So an unreserved woman gets the same 45 ceiling as an ST candidate.
Reservation
The main roster uses 14 per cent OBC reservation on 87 per cent of posts; the other 13 per cent sit in a provisional table subject to the High Court's decision, listed both as OBC (provisional) and Unreserved (notional). Read the main table as live. Reservation and age relaxation are only for native residents of Madhya Pradesh; others compete and pay as unreserved.
Backlog post codes (12 and 47 for Lab Attendant) are open only to the reserved category concerned, and carry no fee.
For non-executive posts, Baiga, Sahariya (Saharia) and Bhariya candidates apply against ST vacancies in hard copy to the department, on Annexure 2, not to the Board. Every Group-5 2026 post code is non-executive.
Selection Process
- Online application on MPOnline, covering every post code you want.
- Preference order for those posts (clause 9.2).
- Written exam, 15 April 2026, two shifts.
- Model answers on the Board's site before the result (clause 3.11(i)).
- Objections online within three days (clause 3.9).
- Final key by the subject expert committee, whose word is final.
- Result, a per-candidate lookup.
- Forwarding and appointment. Departments fill vacancies from the Board's list, including future posts (clause 6), and the Board can forward names to other bodies that ask (clause 6(2)).
The preference order
A post you leave out won't be considered for you, however high you score (clause 3.1(iv)). And once a post is allotted, you go on the waiting lists for posts ranked above it and nowhere at all for those below (clause 3.37(10)). The rulebook's example: someone with eighteen preferences allotted the fourth waits on one to three and drops off five to eighteen.
If a post is advertised only for a sub-category and no eligible candidate applies, it stays empty (clause 3.1(v)). That's why backlog codes recur.
The Board only runs the exam and declares the result (clause 3.13); records are destroyed after the final result under an order of 19 October 2016. Disputes go to the High Court of Madhya Pradesh. Under clause 3.29 there's no recount or re-evaluation.
Qualifying gives no right to a job (clause 5(2)): the department must ask for the post, the Board forward your name, you meet every condition, and the department issue the order.
Salary
The Group-5 rulebook publishes no pay scale. Pay follows each employer's recruitment rules; for post code 24 that's Dr Laxminarayan Pandey Government Medical College, Ratlam.
| Item | What the rulebook says |
|---|---|
| Service group | Group-5, under the General Administration Department's circular 468 of 4 October 2013 as amended by circular 74 of 16 February 2015, circular 416 of 10 October 2016 and circular 06 of 10 February 2017 |
| Class | Third Class (Tritiya Shreni) |
| Nature of every post code in this cycle | Non-executive (akaryapalik) |
| Pay | Not stated. Governed by the employing department's recruitment rules |
For context only, the Board's separate Nursing Officer and Sister Tutor rulebook of 2026 lists Rs 28,700 at Level 7 and Rs 36,200 at Level 9. That's a different recruitment.
These are regular third class posts, filled by direct or backlog direct recruitment.

Cut Off
MPESB publishes no cut-off marks for this exam. The result is an individual lookup, as in 2023 and 2024. What the rulebook fixes is the qualifying floor (clause 5):
| Category | Qualifying percentage | Marks out of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 50 per cent | 50 |
| Scheduled Caste | 40 per cent | 40 |
| Scheduled Tribe | 40 per cent | 40 |
| Other Backward Class | 40 per cent | 40 |
| Candidates with disability | 40 per cent | 40 |
| Economically Weaker Section | 40 per cent, by a General Administration Department order of 22 September 2022, with selection from the Economically Weaker Section list made on merit within that list | 40 |
It's applied to the proportionate score, not the percentile. Your own marks are on the First Phase Result page.
Preparation Tips
- Start from post code 24 in Chapter 2 of the rulebook. It sets your paper, your fee, your employer and the two reserved posts you're competing for.
- Read Ratlam medical college's recruitment rules before paying; they decide eligibility.
- Work through paper C heading by heading. The named tests in haematology and serology are a checklist.
- Don't give away the 25 general marks. Hindi grammar, arithmetic and reasoning reward practice.
- Answer nearly everything. A blind guess is worth 1(0.25) − 0.25(0.75) = 0.0625 (about 0.06) of a mark. For the floor: 60 right of 100 attempted gives 60 − 10 = 50; 55 of 80 gives 55 − 6.25 = 48.75; 58 of 80 gives 58 − 5.5 = 52.5; 52 of 100 gives 52 − 12 = 40.
- Practise on past Board papers under real marking: 100 questions, 120 minutes, −0.25 per wrong answer.
- Fill the preference order completely and in the order you mean.
- Get the photo right and unlock Aadhaar biometrics; these knock out more candidates than the paper.
Sample Papers
MPESB publishes its past papers on its old question papers index, including the Group-5 papers of 2024, 2023 and 2022, the Paramedical 2025 paper, and model answers for the Lab Technician Recruitment Test 2015 and both 2017 tests. After the exam, your own paper and responses appear on the question objections page.
