MPPSC State Service Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The State Service Examination of the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, at Residency Area, Indore. It is the state's civil services examination, recruiting to the State Administrative Service, the State Police Service and about twenty other services.

Read the table before setting a target. Deputy Collector, the post the examination is known for, is 17 of the 155, while the largest single allocation is 39 Development Block Women Empowerment Officer posts at 3600 grade pay, well below the Deputy Collector scale.

Exam Pattern
One Preliminary, two examinations
The Commission holds a single combined Preliminary Examination for the State Service Examination and the State Forest Service Examination. For the 2026 cycle it was held on Sunday 26 April 2026, and the two advertisements were issued on the same day, 31 December 2025. The Forest Service advertisement puts it plainly: to be included in the second stage of the State Forest Service examination, being the written examination and interview, it is compulsory for a candidate to appear in and qualify the State Service Preliminary Examination 2026.
| Paper | Subject | Duration | Marks | Timing on 26 April 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | General Studies | 2 hours | 300 | 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon |
| II | General Aptitude Test | 2 hours | 300 | 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. |
| Type | Objective, multiple choice, on an OMR sheet |
| Questions | 100 in each paper, each worth 3 marks |
| Options | Four, grouped A, B, C and D, of which one is correct. The candidate darkens one circle only |
| Marking | (3R minus W), where R is the number of correct answers and W the number of wrong ones. 3 marks for a correct answer, 1 mark deducted for a wrong one |
| Language | Hindi and English. But the questions on point 7 of the second paper's syllabus, comprehension skill in the Hindi language, are set in Hindi only |
| Where | District headquarters, in two sessions on the same day |
Do the arithmetic on the marking: three wrong answers cancel one right one, and an unattempted question costs nothing. Eliminating two of the four options makes a guess worth taking; guessing blind does not.
The minimum qualifying marks, in each paper
| Candidate | Minimum in each paper |
|---|---|
| Unreserved, and unreserved women | 40 per cent |
| Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Economically Weaker Section and persons with disability | 30 per cent |
The Main Examination
The exam plan describes it as the State Service Main Examination, written and descriptive, and states that the final selection list is made only on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the interview.
The detailed Mains plan and syllabus for the 2026 cycle had not been published when this page was checked on 11 September 2026. The Commission issues it as a separate document under Syllabus and Scheme on its own site, as it did for the State Forest Service Mains on 6 February 2026. No paper structure or mark allocation is stated here, because none has been published for this cycle and the figures circulating elsewhere have no source.
Syllabus
The Commission published the exam plan and syllabus for the State Service and State Forest Service (Preliminary) Examination 2026 on 5 January 2026 and revised it on 21 January 2026. The detailed Preliminary syllabus is at Appendix Two. One rule about the syllabus itself: that of the State Forest Service Preliminary Examination is the same as that of the State Service Preliminary Examination.
Paper I: General Studies
| Unit | What it covers |
|---|---|
| History of India | Concepts and ideas: the ancient Indian knowledge tradition, Bharatvarsha, the Vedas, Upanishads, Aranyakas and Brahmana texts, the Shaddarshana, the Smritis, Rita, Sabha, Samiti, Ganatantra, Varnashrama, Purushartha, Rina, Sanskara, the Panchamahayajna and Yajna, the doctrine of Karma, the Bodhisattva and the Tirthankara. The main features and events of ancient and medieval Indian history and their administrative, social and economic systems. India's cultural heritage in art forms, literature, festivals and celebrations. The social and religious reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. The freedom struggle and the Indian national movement. The integration and reorganisation of India after independence |
| History, Culture and Literature of Madhya Pradesh | The important events and major dynasties of its history; its contribution to the freedom movement; its major art and architecture; its major tribes and their dialects; its major festivals, folk music, folk arts and folk literature; its major literary figures and their works; its major religious, cultural and archaeological tourist sites; its World Heritage Sites; and its major tribal personalities |
| Geography of India | Mountains, hills, plateaus, rivers and lakes; climatic phenomena including El Nino, La Nina, the southern oscillation and western disturbances and the consequences of climate change; natural resources in forest, mineral and water; major crops, food security, the Green Revolution and strategies for a second Green Revolution; conventional and non-conventional energy sources; natural hazards and disasters and major cyclones; and population growth, distribution and density and rural to urban migration |
| AYUSH and health | The basic principles of Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and homoeopathy; the One Nation One Health System policy 2030; the Tridosha and the Panchamahabhuta, Dinacharya, Ritucharya, the basics of Panchakarma and the biological clock; health administration including AYUSH at central, state, district and village level and the place of Ayurveda in the National Health Policy; the Panchakosha theory, Ashtanga Yoga, the Shatkarma and mudra; naturopathy in mud therapy, sun bath and hydrotherapy; and the Shodasha Sanskara |
| National health programmes | Health and sanitation and diseases, leprosy, AIDS, blindness, polio, the national tuberculosis programme, vector-borne disease control, reproductive and child health, the Integrated Child Development Scheme, universal and national immunisation, the National AYUSH Mission and the National Family Health Survey; the Swachh Bharat Mission, Ayushman Bharat, the National Health Mission and the maternal mortality rate in Madhya Pradesh; biomarkers in haematology, biochemistry and serology; and primary health care with its levels and structure at the sub-centre, the primary health centre, the community health centre and rural hospitals |
| Environment | The concept of environment in Indian tradition and culture, the Janapadodhvamsa and the distortions of air, water, place and time; the impact of human activity on the environment, environmental ethics and values, biodiversity with special reference to Madhya Pradesh, pollution and climate change, endangered and extinct species; environmental problems and challenges and the causes and effects of degradation; and environmental education with its public awareness programmes and its relation to health and safety |
Notice two things in that list. Madhya Pradesh is named in unit after unit, with one whole unit given to the state's history, culture and literature, so national material prepares a candidate for part of this paper only. And AYUSH and traditional medicine occupy a full unit, with the Indian knowledge tradition appearing again at the head of the history unit. That is unusual among state civil services syllabi, and it is stated at a level of detail, down to the Shodasha Sanskara and the Panchakosha theory, that a candidate can prepare against directly.
Paper II: General Aptitude Test
100 questions of 3 marks, two hours, 300 marks. Its syllabus is at Appendix Two alongside Paper I's. One point is singled out in the exam plan: the questions on point 7, comprehension skill in the Hindi language, are set in Hindi only, even though the rest of the paper is in Hindi and English. For the State Service Examination this paper is qualifying only, and how much time it deserves follows from that.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational qualification
All graduates are eligible, and so are candidates studying in the final year of graduation. There is no subject requirement. The two deadlines differ, and the distinction matters.
| What | Must be held by |
|---|---|
| The degree | The last date of the online application for the Main Examination |
| Everything else: original or local residence, age, caste, disability, ex-serviceman status, Economically Weaker Section status for the relevant financial year | The last date for the Preliminary application, being 9 February 2026 for this cycle |
Late applicants are not exempt: candidates applying with a late fee must also have acquired all eligibility by that same date. A candidate who applies without the mandatory qualifications may be debarred, and documents may be called for at any stage.
Age
Reckoned as on 1 January 2026 for this cycle, and from one document only: the date of birth accepted is the one entered in the candidate's 10th (High School) marksheet. The name, the father's name and the date of birth must be entered in the online application exactly as they appear on it.
Reservation, and who gets it
The process follows the Madhya Pradesh Public Services (Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes) Act, 1994, and all of it is in the context of Madhya Pradesh State.
- Reservation and age relaxation for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Economically Weaker Section, women, persons with disability and ex-servicemen is available only to original residents of Madhya Pradesh. Candidates of those categories from other states are treated as unreserved.
- Where no post is reserved for a category, its candidates are considered unreserved.
- Creamy layer Other Backward Class candidates get no reservation, no age relaxation and no other benefit. An MP-resident OBC candidate in the creamy layer who enters OBC in the application is treated exactly as unreserved, and every OBC candidate must declare before the interview, in point 6 of Appendix III, that they do not fall in the creamy layer.
- The certificate for EWS and other reserved categories, in the State Government's prescribed format from the competent authority, must be valid for the financial year 2025-2026 on the last date for applying.
The 87 and 13 per cent split, which runs through the whole recruitment
Madhya Pradesh's Other Backward Class reservation is before the courts, so the Commission runs this examination in two parallel parts, following General Administration Department letter F 07-46/2021/A.P./One dated 29 September 2022: a main part of 87 per cent of the vacancies, on the basis of 14 per cent Other Backward Class posts, and a provisional part of 13 per cent held back. The split runs through all three stages, and in the vacancy table every post's row is broken into a main-part line and a provisional-part line.
The advertisement states the consequence: candidates selected provisionally in the Preliminary Examination for those posts are included in the interview provisionally, and after the final decision of the Honourable Court they are selected only against the 13 per cent posts held back in their own category, whether Other Backward Class or unreserved, and not against the 87 per cent posts already declared. A provisionally shortlisted candidate is competing for a smaller pool whose fate waits on a judgment not yet delivered.
Employment exchange registration
| Candidate | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Candidates of other states | Exempt, under the final order of 8 March 2022 in Writ Petition 5096/2022 before the principal bench of the High Court at Jabalpur |
| Original residents of Madhya Pradesh | Not required when applying, but a live registration certificate must be produced by the last date for sending documents for the interview |
| MP residents already in government service | Exempt, on producing a no objection certificate |
| MP residents in non-government service | Exempt, on producing a certificate of being in service |
What ends a candidature
The result is declared on the category, class, gender, disability, ex-serviceman status, government servant status and date of birth the candidate entered. After the correction period no change of any kind is accepted, and the Commission will not correspond about a representation on category or date of birth. Wrong information about educational qualification, category, original or local residence, age, caste, disability, ex-serviceman status or Economically Weaker Section status, coming to the Commission's notice at any level of the examination, results in cancellation of the candidature and debarment.
Selected candidates are appointed on probation for two years.
Selection Process
The three stages
- State Service Preliminary Examination, objective and OMR based. Two papers of 300 marks each.
- State Service Main Examination, written and descriptive.
- Interview.
And the rule that governs the whole thing: the Preliminary is taken only as an eligibility test. Candidates are declared qualified for the Main Examination on the basis of the marks obtained in it, and the final selection list is made only on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the interview.
Paper II counts for one examination and not the other
This is the fact most descriptions get wrong, and the Commission states it in four numbered notes at the end of the Preliminary exam plan.
| State Service Examination | State Forest Service Examination | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I, General Studies | Counts towards the Preliminary merit | Counts towards the Preliminary merit |
| Paper II, General Aptitude Test | Qualifying only. The minimum must be obtained, and the marks are not included in determining the merit order for the Preliminary result | Counts. The merit list is prepared by adding the marks of both papers |
Same paper, same room, same afternoon. For a State Service candidate it is a hurdle to clear at 40 or 30 per cent; for a State Forest Service candidate it is half the Preliminary score, so a candidate applying to both should treat it as a scoring paper.
The shortlist
A maximum of twenty times the total number of vacancies, category-wise. Candidates obtaining equal marks within a category are also declared qualified, and only candidates the Commission has declared qualified under the relevant advertisement may enter the Main Examination.
The Main Examination and the interview
The Mains is written and descriptive, and together with the interview it constitutes the entire final merit. The detailed Mains plan and syllabus for the 2026 cycle had not been published when this page was checked on 11 September 2026; the Commission issues it separately under Syllabus and Scheme, as it did for the State Forest Service Mains on 6 February 2026.
The shortlisting at all three stages is issued in the 87 per cent main part and 13 per cent provisional part described under Eligibility, so a provisionally shortlisted candidate is interviewed provisionally too.
Before the interview
Two documents are required from candidates who reach that stage, both attached with the records sent to the Commission: a live employment exchange registration certificate for original residents of Madhya Pradesh, or for those already in service a no objection certificate or a certificate of being in service; and, for every Other Backward Class candidate, a declaration in point 6 of Appendix III that they do not fall in the creamy layer.
Salary
The advertisement gives a pay scale against each post, in five bands.
| Pay scale | Posts |
|---|---|
| 15600-39100 with 5400 grade pay | Deputy Collector (State Administrative Service), Deputy Superintendent of Police, Commercial Tax Officer, Chief Municipal Officer Class B, Assistant Director (Public Relations), District Coordinator and Assistant Project Administrator (Tribal Affairs), Assistant Director and District Supply Officer, District Women and Child Development Officer |
| 56100-177500 | Assistant Commissioner Cooperative and Assistant Registrar Cooperative Societies |
| 36200-114800, on the seventh pay | Cooperative Inspector and Cooperative Extension Officer |
| 9300-34800 with 4200 grade pay | Additional Assistant Development Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of a Janpad Panchayat |
| 9300-34800 with 3600 grade pay | Development Block Officer, Child Development Project Officer, Development Block Women Empowerment Officer, Naib Tehsildar, Excise Sub Inspector, Deputy Registrar, Assistant Labour Officer, Chief Municipal Officer Class C, Area Coordinator |
And the note that goes with the table: dearness allowance and other allowances sanctioned by the State Government from time to time are payable in addition to the pay scales shown.
Hold two facts together when reading that. The examination is the route to the state's administrative and police services, which together are 35 of the 155 posts, 17 Deputy Collector and 18 Deputy Superintendent of Police. And most of its posts are not those: the single largest allocation is 39 Development Block Women Empowerment Officer posts in the 3600 grade pay band. Appointment is on probation for two years.
How to Apply
| 2026 cycle | |
|---|---|
| Advertisement | 29/2025, dated 31 December 2025 |
| Mode | Online only, at www.mponline.gov.in and www.mppsc.mp.gov.in. No manual or postal application is accepted |
| Applications open | 10 January 2026 |
| Applications close | 9 February 2026, 12:00 midnight |
The late fee
| When the application is filed | Late fee |
|---|---|
| By 9 February 2026 | None |
| 10 to 16 February 2026 | ₹3,000 |
| 17 February to 1 April 2026 | ₹25,000 |
The Commission offers this as a facility for candidates who cannot apply by the last date for unavoidable reasons. It is a priced extension rather than a penalty, but ₹25,000 is a very large sum, and the late fee buys time to apply and not time to become eligible. Apply by 9 February.
Error correction
| When | Fee | What cannot be changed |
|---|---|---|
| 15 January to 11 February 2026, online only | ₹50 per correction per session | The candidate's name. No correction of the name is possible at all |
| For late fee applicants, up to 15 days before the Preliminary admit card issues | ₹50 per session | The same |
And the warning that gives it teeth: an error in the Preliminary application cannot be corrected at the Mains or the interview stage. Correcting a reserved category to unreserved means paying the difference in the application fee on top of the correction fee; correcting the other way does not refund it. The entry to get right first time is the identity block: the date of birth accepted is the one on the 10th (High School) marksheet, the name and father's name must match it exactly, and the name cannot be corrected at all.
Pay by credit card, debit card or internet banking, or in cash through an authorised MP Online kiosk; the fee schedule is at Appendix III and no bank draft or cheque is accepted. The Commission will not entertain refund claims for excess or erroneous payment.
Participating Institutes
Who does what
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, Residency Area, Indore | Conducts the examination at all three stages, publishes the advertisement, the exam plan and syllabus, the provisional and final answer keys, the results and the mark sheets. Documents are signed by the Controller of Examination |
| MP Online | The application portal, and the authorised kiosks through which the fee may be paid in cash |
| General Administration Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh | Source of the guidelines in letter F 07-46/2021/A.P./One dated 29 September 2022 under which the shortlisting is issued in an 87 per cent main part and a 13 per cent provisional part |
| The requisitioning departments | They fix the educational qualification, experience, desirable qualification and reservation classification of the posts. The Commission has no role in it and does not accept complaints about it |
Twelve departments take the successful candidates in this cycle: General Administration, Home (Police), Commercial Tax, Cooperative, Urban Development and Housing, Panchayat and Rural Development, Public Relations, Tribal Affairs, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Women and Child Development, Revenue and Labour.
The reservation runs under the Madhya Pradesh Public Services (Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes) Act, 1994, the State Government's instructions for the Economically Weaker Section, the litigation that produces the 87 and 13 per cent split, and the High Court order of 8 March 2022 in Writ Petition 5096/2022 that exempted candidates of other states from employment exchange registration.
MPPSC runs a large continuous calendar alongside this examination, from Assistant Professor posts to the State Engineering Service, Food Safety Officer and the State Eligibility Test, so check the advertisement number before relying on any rule: the State Service Examination is 29/2025 and the State Forest Service Examination 30/2025.
Exam Centres
The Preliminary is held at district headquarters, in two sessions on the same day. For the 2026 cycle that was Sunday 26 April 2026: General Studies from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and the General Aptitude Test from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., a little over two hours apart. Plan for a full day at the centre.
Admit cards are downloaded from www.mponline.gov.in and www.mppsc.mp.gov.in, and for the 2026 cycle were available from 16 April 2026, ten days before.
A candidate who applied for both the State Service and the State Forest Service examinations sits one set of papers at one centre; the two candidatures diverge only afterwards, the State Service Preliminary merit being Paper I alone and the Forest Service merit Paper I plus Paper II.
The papers are OMR sheet based, with four options per question grouped A, B, C and D, of which the candidate darkens one circle. Each paper is set in Hindi and English, except the questions on point 7 of Paper II's syllabus, comprehension skill in the Hindi language, which are in Hindi only. Where the two versions of any question differ, the Commission's published answer key rule settles it: only the Hindi translation is valid.
Important Dates
The 2026 cycle
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 31 December 2025 | Advertisements issued |
| 1 January 2026 | The date on which age is reckoned |
| 10 January 2026 | Online applications open |
| 15 January 2026 | Online error correction opens |
| 9 February 2026, 12:00 midnight | Last date for the online application, and the date by which every eligibility except the degree must be held |
| 10 to 16 February 2026 | Application still possible on payment of a late fee of ₹3,000 |
| 11 February 2026 | Online error correction closes |
| 17 February to 1 April 2026 | Application still possible on payment of a late fee of ₹25,000 |
| 1 April 2026 | Absolute last date for any error correction |
| 16 April 2026 | Admit cards available for download |
| 26 April 2026, Sunday | Combined Preliminary Examination, in two sessions |
Three dates decide eligibility. 1 January 2026 fixes age, computed from the date of birth on the 10th (High School) marksheet. 9 February 2026 fixes everything else: residence, caste, disability, ex-serviceman status, EWS status and the validity of the reserved category certificate for 2025-2026, and late fee applicants are not exempt. The last date of the Mains application fixes the degree, which is why a final-year student may sit the Preliminary.
The Main Examination and the interview have not been dated. As at 11 September 2026 the Commission had not published the Mains plan, syllabus or dates for this cycle; they appear on its Syllabus and Scheme and Examination Calendar pages.
Admit Card
Admit cards are downloaded from www.mponline.gov.in and www.mppsc.mp.gov.in, and for the 2026 cycle were available from 16 April 2026 for the 26 April examination. The Commission communicates entirely through its own site, which carries dated listings of Advertisements, an Examination Calendar, Syllabus and Scheme, Sample Question Answer Booklets, Examination Rules, Previous Year Question Papers, Results, Mark Sheet, a Mocktest facility and Download Formats.
Three things cannot be fixed once the admit card stage is reached. The candidate's name, which cannot be corrected at any point. Anything at all after 1 April 2026, the absolute end of the correction window. And anything at the Mains or interview stage: the advertisement states that an error in the Preliminary application cannot be corrected there, and that candidates should fill the Preliminary application with great care.
Beyond results the Commission publishes obtained mark lists, selection lists, corrigenda, caveat notices and notices on the rejection of candidature, each as a separate dated document.
Result
What decides the final result
| Stage | Marks | Enters the final merit? |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary Paper I, General Studies | 300 | No. An eligibility test |
| Preliminary Paper II, General Aptitude Test | 300 | No. Qualifying only, and not even counted in the Preliminary merit |
| Main Examination, written and descriptive | Not yet published for this cycle | Yes |
| Interview | Not yet published for this cycle | Yes |
The exam plan states it directly: the final selection list is made only on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the interview. The Preliminary result itself is computed on Paper I alone, after both papers have been cleared at 40 or 30 per cent, by the (3R minus W) formula, and the shortlist is capped at twenty times the vacancies category-wise.
The answer key process, which is unusually specific
After the Preliminary the Commission publishes a provisional answer key of the questions asked and their model answers, and receives objections online for five days, only through its portal and only on payment of a prescribed per-question fee and a portal fee. Nothing is considered after the five days, and the fee is not refunded in any circumstance. A subject expert committee then decides them by four published rules:
- Where the provisional key gives a wrong answer and another option is right, the key is corrected.
- Where the Hindi and English translations of a question differ, only the Hindi translation is valid.
- Where more than one option is correct, all correct answers are accepted.
- Where no option is correct, the question is deleted, and every candidate present at that paper is awarded its full marks.
A final answer key is then published, and the committee's decision is final and binding. That second rule decides real disputes: in a paper set in two languages, the Hindi version governs.
Alongside the keys the Commission publishes the result stage by stage, a separate obtained mark list, the selection list and a standing Mark Sheet facility. A result is still not the end of the matter: a candidature or selection result may be cancelled where ineligibility or wrong information is found at any stage, or even after the result is declared.
Cut Off
Three different bars
| What it is | Fixed or floating | |
|---|---|---|
| The minimum in each Preliminary paper | 40 per cent for unreserved candidates and unreserved women; 30 per cent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Economically Weaker Section and disabled candidates | Fixed in the exam plan |
| The Preliminary shortlist | A maximum of twenty times the total vacancies, category-wise, with all candidates on equal marks within a category included | Fixed as a rule |
| The Preliminary cut-off | The mark at which that shortlist closes, category by category | Floating |
With 155 posts, twenty times gives a maximum shortlist of about 3,100, distributed category-wise rather than as a single line. Each category's shortlist is capped at twenty times its own vacancies, so the cut-off is set within a category and follows from that category's share of the 155.
| Category | Posts |
|---|---|
| Unreserved | 40 |
| Other Backward Class | 39 |
| Scheduled Tribe | 30 |
| Scheduled Caste | 19 |
| Economically Weaker Section | 16 |
With separate columns for the posts reserved for MP-domiciled women, ex-servicemen and persons with locomotor, visual, hearing and multiple disability. The cut-off also exists in two parts, because the shortlist is issued in the 87 per cent main part and the 13 per cent provisional part described under Eligibility.
The point most easily missed: the cut-off is computed on Paper I alone. Paper II must be cleared at 40 or 30 per cent and then set aside, because its marks are not included in determining the merit order for the Preliminary result. A candidate who scores heavily in Paper II and modestly in Paper I gains nothing from the first, though in the State Forest Service Preliminary, drawn from the same papers, they would gain a great deal.
The closing mark itself is an outcome rather than a rule, so it is known only after the event. It appears on the Commission's own site, with the result, a separate obtained mark list, the selection list and the standing Mark Sheet facility.
Preparation Tips
First, work out which paper actually scores
For the State Service Examination, Paper I is the entire Preliminary merit and Paper II is worth nothing beyond clearing 40 or 30 per cent. Give Paper II enough preparation to clear the bar comfortably and put the rest of your time into Paper I. If you are also applying for the State Forest Service Examination, this reverses for that candidature: there both papers are added.
Then do the arithmetic on the marking
Each question is worth 3 marks and each wrong answer costs 1, so three wrong answers cancel one right one and an unattempted question costs nothing. Eliminating two of four options makes a guess worth taking; guessing blind does not.
Take Madhya Pradesh seriously
A whole unit of the Paper I syllabus is the state's history, culture and literature, and it reappears in the environment unit and the health unit. National material covers none of it.
Do not skip the AYUSH and health unit
It is unusual among state civil services syllabi and the Commission publishes it in detail, down to named concepts. A syllabus stated that specifically can be prepared against directly, which makes it one of the most efficient parts of the paper.
Apply by 9 February, not after
Applying later costs ₹3,000 and then ₹25,000, and the late fee buys time to apply, not time to become eligible.
Fill the form as if it cannot be changed, because mostly it cannot
- The name cannot be corrected at all.
- Enter the name, father's name and date of birth exactly as on the 10th (High School) marksheet, which is the only accepted source of the date of birth.
- Other corrections cost ₹50 per session and close on 11 February 2026, with an absolute end of 1 April 2026.
- Nothing can be corrected at the Mains or interview stage.
If you are an Other Backward Class candidate, read the creamy layer rules twice
Creamy layer candidates get no reservation, no age relaxation and no other benefit, and an MP-resident OBC candidate in the creamy layer who enters OBC is treated exactly as unreserved. Understand the 87 and 13 per cent split before you start, too: a candidate shortlisted in the provisional part is competing for the 13 per cent held back, and their selection waits on a court decision.
If you are not from Madhya Pradesh
All reservation and its age relaxation is available only to original residents of Madhya Pradesh, so candidates of those categories from other states are treated as unreserved.
And prepare the objection route in advance
The provisional answer key takes objections online for five days only, on payment of a per-question fee that is never refunded. Know that before the result, because the window is short and there is no extension.
Sample Papers
The Commission publishes more free material than most, all on its own site: Previous Year Question Papers and Sample Question Answer Booklets, a Mocktest it hosts itself, an Examination Calendar, Examination Rules, the provisional and final answer keys, and results, obtained mark lists and selection lists published separately from one another.
The papers and booklets settle the level of the paper better than any description can, and the Mocktest uses the Commission's own interface. The two documents that settle disputes about the pattern are the exam plan and syllabus, the shorter of the two, and the advertisement.
Checking material sold for this examination
Against those two documents, ask whether it says Paper II is qualifying only and not counted in the Preliminary merit, since material written for the State Forest Service describes a different arrangement; whether it gives the marking as 3 marks per correct answer and 1 deducted per wrong one, and each paper as 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours; whether it carries the Madhya Pradesh units and the AYUSH unit; whether it uses the syllabus revised on 21 January 2026; whether it explains the 87 and 13 per cent split; whether it says reservation is only for original residents of Madhya Pradesh; and whether it claims a Mains paper structure for 2026, which the Commission had not published when this page was checked. A vacancy figure quoted without an advertisement number is another warning sign: this cycle is 155 under advertisement 29/2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who conducts the MPPSC State Service Examination?
The Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission, at Residency Area, Indore. Applications are online only, through www.mponline.gov.in and www.mppsc.mp.gov.in.
How many posts are there?
155 under advertisement 29/2025, including 17 Deputy Collector and 18 Deputy Superintendent of Police posts.
What are the stages, and does the Preliminary count?
A Preliminary Examination, objective and OMR based; a Main Examination, written and descriptive; and an interview. The Preliminary is taken only as an eligibility test: the final selection list is made only on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the interview.
What is the Preliminary pattern, and how is it marked?
Two objective papers: Paper I, General Studies, and Paper II, General Aptitude Test, each 100 questions of 3 marks, 300 marks, two hours, four options per question. Marking is (3R minus W): 3 marks for a correct answer, 1 deducted for a wrong one, nothing for an unattempted one.
Does Paper II count?
For the State Service Examination, no. It is qualifying only, and the Commission states that its marks are not included in determining the merit order for the Preliminary result.
Then why is it the same paper as the Forest Service one?
Because there is one combined Preliminary Examination for both, and the State Forest Service merit list is prepared by adding the marks of both papers.
What are the qualifying marks, and how many go through?
40 per cent in each paper for unreserved candidates and unreserved women, 30 per cent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Economically Weaker Section and disabled candidates. The Mains shortlist is a maximum of twenty times the total vacancies, category-wise.
What is the Mains pattern?
Written and descriptive. The detailed plan and syllabus for the 2026 cycle had not been published when this page was checked on 11 September 2026; the Commission issues it separately under Syllabus and Scheme.
What qualification is needed, and by when?
Any graduate degree, and final-year students may apply. The degree must be complete by the last date of the Mains application; everything else, from residence to caste to EWS status, must be held by 9 February 2026, and late fee applicants are not exempt.
How is age computed?
Reckoned as on 1 January 2026, from the date of birth on the 10th (High School) marksheet. No other document is accepted.
What is the late fee?
₹3,000 from 10 to 16 February 2026, then ₹25,000 to 1 April 2026.
Can I correct my application, and what cannot be corrected?
Corrections cost ₹50 per session, online only, from 15 January to 11 February 2026, with an absolute end of 1 April 2026; late fee applicants may correct up to fifteen days before the admit card issues. The candidate's name can never be corrected, and nothing at all can be corrected at the Mains or interview stage.
Can candidates from other states get reservation?
No. Reservation and its age relaxation go only to original residents of Madhya Pradesh; others are treated as unreserved.
Do creamy layer OBC candidates get anything?
No reservation, age relaxation or other benefit; such a candidate is treated exactly as unreserved. Every OBC candidate must declare before the interview that they do not fall in the creamy layer.
What is the 87 and 13 per cent split?
Because Other Backward Class reservation is before the courts, shortlisting at every stage is issued in a main part of 87 per cent of the vacancies and a provisional part of 13 per cent. Provisionally shortlisted candidates are interviewed provisionally and, after the court's final decision, are selected only against the 13 per cent held back.
Do I need an employment exchange registration?
Not when applying. An original resident of Madhya Pradesh must produce a live registration certificate before the interview, unless already in service. Candidates of other states are exempt, under the High Court order of 8 March 2022.
Can I challenge an answer key?
Yes, online, within five days of the provisional key, on payment of a per-question fee and a portal fee that are never refunded. The subject expert committee's decision is final and binding, and where the Hindi and English versions of a question differ, only the Hindi translation is valid.
Is the job permanent from the start?
Appointment is on probation for two years.
