NBE Junior Assistant Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, NBEMS, is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, at Ansari Nagar, New Delhi. It runs NEET-PG, NEET-MDS, the DNB and FNB examinations and the Fellowship entrance tests.
Junior Assistant is its clerical entry post: Group C, Pay Matrix Level-2. NBEMS recruits it directly, itself. This cycle is live. Advertisement No. A-12011/3/2025-Estb of 2 June 2026 invited online applications for 53 vacancies across five posts; the window has closed, the scheme of examination is out, and the Computer Based Test for Junior Assistant is fixed for 15 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, moved from 5 September by a rescheduling notice of 1 September 2026.

Junior Assistant is three-quarters of the advertisement, 39 of the 53 posts, and the only one of the five carrying an SC reservation or an earmarked ex-servicemen quota.
Three features set this apart from most clerical recruitments at the level. The paper is time-locked section by section, with no running ahead and no going back. Both stages are compulsory and both count towards the merit. And the fee is waived for all women, not only reserved categories.

NBE Junior Assistant Details
Exam Pattern
Two stages, both compulsory, both counting towards the merit, and no interview. The advertisement says so directly: no interview for Group B and C posts shall be held for selection.
Stage-I: Computer Based Test
| Junior Assistant, Stage-I | |
|---|---|
| Questions | 200, one mark each |
| Duration | 180 minutes |
| Negative marking | 0.25 for each wrong answer |
| Level of the paper | 10+2 |
| Language | Both English and Hindi |
| Minimum qualifying marks | 40 per cent for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen; 50 per cent for others |
The section lock
NBEMS published the scheme of examination on 20 August 2026. For Junior Assistant it is four sections inside the three hours.
| Post | Duration | Questions | Sections | Per section | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Accountant, Stenographer and Junior Assistant | 180 minutes | 200 | 4 | 50 questions and 45 minutes | 200 |
| Deputy Director (Medical) | 210 minutes | 200 | 5 | 40 questions and 42 minutes | 200 |
| Junior Programmer | 180 minutes | 120 | 3 | 40 questions and 40 minutes for the generic section; 40 questions and 70 minutes each for two technical sections | 200 |
The rule attached to that table is stated twice over. A candidate cannot move on early, being restricted from proceeding to the next section until the previous section's time is complete. A candidate cannot go back, being barred from reviewing or modifying a section's responses once its time has finished. And the next section starts automatically when the previous one runs out.
So there is no time to carry forward and nothing to come back to. Forty-five minutes for fifty questions is 54 seconds each, and a candidate who finishes a section early simply waits. The Board adds that the number of time-restricted sections may vary with the total questions and operational feasibility.
Stage-II: Computer Knowledge and Skill Test
| Junior Assistant, Stage-II | |
|---|---|
| Maximum marks | 100, in 75 minutes |
| Who is called | Five candidates for every vacancy, in each category, in order of merit on Stage-I |
| What it contains | Data entry, word processing, computer operation and stenography, as the post requires |
| Minimum qualifying marks | 40 per cent for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen; 50 per cent for others |
Stage-II is not a qualifying test that is then discarded. Its marks are added to Stage-I to make the final merit, which is what sets this apart from the many clerical examinations where a skill test only qualifies. A hundred marks against two hundred makes it a third of the total.
The final merit
Stage-I plus Stage-II. On equal totals the older candidate is placed above, and there is no second tie-break rung. The merit or select list holds good for one year, or until the next selection, whichever is earlier.
Both stages are compulsory: only such candidates shall be considered for selection who participate in all the stages of the examination including Computer Knowledge/Skill Test, and no exemption shall be granted to any candidate. NBEMS also keeps the power to fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all parts of the papers in both stages, with its Selection Committee's decision final.
Syllabus
NBEMS publishes the Stage-I syllabus inside the advertisement, and it is short enough to quote in full.
| Section | Marks per item | Number of items | Section total |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 1 | 50 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 1 | 50 | 50 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 1 | 50 | 50 |
| English Comprehension | 1 | 50 | 50 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
Four sections of exactly fifty marks each. No section is weighted above another, and each is its own locked 45-minute block, so reasoning, general awareness, arithmetic and English each get three quarters of an hour and no more.
The level of the paper
The advertisement fixes it: the level of the paper will be consistent with the educational qualification prescribed for the examination. Junior Accountant sits a graduate level common paper; Stenographer and Junior Assistant sit a 10+2 level paper. All three are the same length and structure.
Stage-II: what is actually tested
Data entry, word processing, computer operation and stenography, as the post requires, at an approved level, for 100 marks in 75 minutes. Stenography is listed because the same test covers three posts, one of them Stenographer. For Junior Assistant the relevant parts are data entry, word processing and computer operation, which is the ground the essential qualification points at: Windows or a network operating system, working in LAN architecture.
What the syllabus does not contain
Nothing about medicine, medical education or the Board's own examinations, despite the employer being a medical examinations body. No interview and no descriptive paper. And no detailed topic list: NBEMS names the four sections and their weights and stops, so at 10+2 level those four names carry their ordinary meaning.
One power the Board reserves
The Selection Committee may fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all parts of the papers, in Stage-I and Stage-II, and its decision is final. A sectional qualifying mark can therefore be imposed on any of the four sections, so no section can safely be written off on the assumption that only the aggregate counts.
Eligibility Criteria
NBEMS fixes eligibility as on the closing date for the online application, and prints a crucial date alongside it.
Essential qualification
- Passed Senior Secondary Examination from a recognised Board or University recognised by the Central Government, a State Government, a Union Territory administration or an educational authority.
- Proficiency in the use of computers and basic software packages such as Windows or a network operating system, working in LAN architecture.
- To qualify the examination as may be prescribed by NBEMS.
That third line is what makes the Computer Knowledge and Skill Test a condition of eligibility rather than just a stage of selection, and it is why no exemption from any stage is granted to anyone.
Age
18 minimum, below 27 maximum, reckoned on the closing date. Note the wording: the advertisement says the candidate must not have attained the prescribed age, so the ceiling is below 27, not 27 inclusive. Junior Accountant and Junior Programmer carry the same ceiling; Stenographer is expressed as 18 to 27; Deputy Director (Medical) is not exceeding 35.
Two dates that do not coincide
The advertisement's table of important dates fixes the crucial date for determining eligibility as 20 July 2026, which was also its original closing date. The corrigendum of 29 June 2026 moved the closing date to 31 July 2026 and said all other terms and eligibility criteria remain unchanged, while the body of the advertisement defines age and qualification as on the closing date. NBEMS has published no clarification. A candidate close to either boundary should take it up with the Board.
Age relaxation
| Category | Relaxation beyond the upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| PwBD, unreserved | 10 years |
| PwBD, OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD, SC or ST | 15 years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service from actual age on the closing date |
| Defence personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with a foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a consequence | 3 years, and 8 years for SC and ST |
| Central Government civilian employees with at least 3 years of regular and continuous service on the closing date | Up to 40 years of age |
| The same, SC or ST | Up to 45 years of age |
| Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated who have not remarried | Up to 35 years of age |
| The same, SC or ST | Up to 40 years of age |
Two rows are easy to miss. The relaxation to 35 or 40 for widowed, divorced and judicially separated women is a standing concession many advertisements omit. And the Group C relaxations for central government civilian employees are listed separately from the Group A and B ones, so a serving employee should read the right block.
PwBD
- Three vacancies across the advertisement are earmarked for persons with benchmark disability, two of them Junior Assistant and one Deputy Director (Medical).
- Junior Assistant is identified as suitable for blindness and low vision; deaf and hard of hearing; locomotor disability including one arm, one leg, both arms, both legs, one arm and one leg, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy; autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disability and mental illness; and multiple disabilities involving those.
- Not less than 40 per cent of the relevant disability, with a certificate from the competent authority when asked.
- A PwBD candidate must also state their SC, ST, OBC, EWS or UR category, because the reservation is horizontal and they have to be placed on the vertical roster.
- Scribe or compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour on request. The candidate arranges the scribe and must ensure the scribe's qualification is not higher than the minimum qualification for the examination.
Three conditions most advertisements no longer carry
- Character. A person dismissed by the Union Government, a State Government, a local authority or a government corporation owned or controlled by either is deemed ineligible.
- Marital status. A male candidate with more than one wife living, or a female candidate who has married a man already having a wife living, is not eligible unless the appointing authority exempts them on special grounds.
- Physical fitness. No person is recruited unless in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of their duties, and a medical certificate is required before appointment.
Selection Process
Two stages, both compulsory, both counted, and no interview.
- Stage-I, Computer Based Test. 200 questions in 180 minutes for 200 marks, with 0.25 negative marking, in four time-locked sections of 50 questions and 45 minutes each. Minimum 40 per cent for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen, 50 per cent for others.
- Stage-II, Computer Knowledge and Skill Test. 100 marks in 75 minutes: data entry, word processing, computer operation. Five candidates per vacancy in each category are called, in order of Stage-I merit. The same 40 and 50 per cent floors.
- Final merit on the total of the two.
The shortlisting arithmetic
With 39 vacancies and a 1:5 ratio applied category by category, roughly 195 candidates reach Stage-II. Those are the numbers to aim at, not the qualifying percentage.
| Category | Vacancies | Approximate Stage-II call at 1:5 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 20 | 100 |
| SC | 07 | 35 |
| OBC | 06 | 30 |
| ST | 03, including one backlog | 15 |
| EWS | 03 | 15 |
| Total | 39 | 195 |
Stage-II is a third of the final score, 100 marks against 200. A strong skill test moves a candidate up the list and a weak one moves them down, provided both clear the floor. On equal totals the older candidate is placed above, and there is no second rung. The select list holds good for one year, or until the next selection, whichever is earlier.
Powers NBEMS reserves
- To alter the number of vacancies, modify the examination process and fix the minimum cut-off marks, without assigning reasons. The vacancies may increase, decrease or be withdrawn without prior notice.
- To fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all parts of the papers, in both stages, with the Selection Committee's decision final.
- To cancel or change any examination city, state or centre, or add others, depending on response, administrative feasibility or force majeure.
- The final word on eligibility, acceptance or rejection of applications, penalty for false information, mode of the examination, allotment of centres, and selection and allotment of posts.
What ends a candidature
- Not participating in every stage. No exemption is granted to any candidate, and PwBD candidates are warned that failing to appear when called may disqualify them.
- Not meeting the eligibility norms, or suppressing, twisting or truncating any material fact. The candidature stands cancelled without reasons and without notice, and if detected after appointment, services are liable to be terminated and the candidate liable for criminal proceedings.
- Applying without the appropriate fee or the required documents. An application is rejected for non-payment if the fee reaches the bank after the last date.
The result appears only on natboard.edu.in, and so does the information about the next stage.
Salary
Junior Assistant at NBEMS is Group C, Pay Matrix Level-2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission. The advertisement fixes the level and does not itemise allowances.
| Post | Group | Pay Matrix Level | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deputy Director (Medical) | A | Level-11 | 02 |
| Junior Programmer | B | Level-7 | 01 |
| Junior Accountant | C | Level-4 | 04 |
| Stenographer | C | Level-4 | 07 |
| Junior Assistant | C | Level-2 | 39 |
Level-2 is the standard entry level for a central clerical post, the same as a Lower Division Clerk elsewhere in government. On top of basic pay sits the usual central package: dearness allowance, house rent allowance at the rate for the city of posting, transport allowance, and the central government's pension and medical arrangements.
The rung above
NBEMS's own record shows the ladder. In November 2025 it held a Limited Departmental Competitive Examination for Senior Assistant, publishing eligibility lists, an admit card notice, an objection portal and a select list in March 2026. In September 2025 it invited comments from stakeholders on draft Recruitment Rules for the post of Senior Assistant. So Senior Assistant is the next rung, filled partly by a departmental examination open to the Board's own staff, and the conditions attached to a grade are revised rather than fixed.
Where the work is
NAMS Building, Medical Enclave, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi 110029, on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. The advertisement names no other location and prescribes no transfer liability beyond the establishment.
Two conditions on appointment
- Physical fitness. A candidate finally approved must produce a medical certificate of physical fitness from whoever the appointing authority specifies.
- Character. The advertisement places the duty of satisfying oneself on that point on the candidate, and deems ineligible anyone dismissed by the Union Government, a State Government, a local authority or a government corporation owned or controlled by either.
How to Apply
Applications are online only, through the portal NBEMS links from its Vacancy Notice Board. The Board published that link by a separate notice on 7 July 2026, the day the window opened.
| Item | As advertised, 2 June 2026 | As amended, 29 June 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Date of issue of advertisement | 27 June 2026 | unchanged |
| Online application opens | 29 June 2026 | 7 July 2026 |
| Online application closes | 20 July 2026, 23:59 | 31 July 2026, 23:59 |
| Crucial date for eligibility | 20 July 2026 | the corrigendum states all other terms remain unchanged |
| Written examination | 5 and 6 September 2026, tentative | fixed, then rescheduled to 15 and 16 September |
The corrigendum moved both application dates due to administrative reasons and left everything else alone, which is how the crucial date and the closing date came to point at different days.
Examination fee
₹1,500 plus 18 per cent GST for UR and OBC candidates. Nil for SC, ST, PwBD and women. The waiver covers all women, not only reserved-category women, which many central advertisements do not do. Bank process and service taxes are extra, the fee is non-refundable, and payment is online only.
One clause matters more than it looks: an application is accepted only when the fee is deposited in the bank up to the prescribed last date. If it reaches the bank afterwards the candidature is rejected for non-payment, whatever the state of the form.
Nothing can be edited after submission
Name, post applied for, caste, category, date of birth, address, e-mail and mobile number are treated as final, and after submission no field of the form can be edited or deleted. No correspondence about a change of details is entertained later.
Four more clauses
- An application without the appropriate fee, documents or information is liable to be rejected.
- NBEMS may cancel or change any examination city, state or centre, or add others, depending on response, administrative feasibility or force majeure.
- An ex-serviceman already re-employed in a civil post after availing ESM reservation is not eligible for it, or for the fee concession, again.
- The result and the information about the next stage appear only on natboard.edu.in.
Participating Institutes
One body recruits and one body employs. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, at NAMS Building, Medical Enclave, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi 110029. It conducts this recruitment itself: no commission, no shared merit list, no common examination with any other body.
The advertisement describes it in one sentence: an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, which conducts Post Graduate Examinations of high standards in the field of Modern Medicine and Allied specialties at National level. A Junior Assistant works in the administration of that machinery.
Four recruitment routes run in parallel
| Route | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Direct recruitment | This one. Advertisement No. A-12011/3/2025-Estb of 2 June 2026 filled 53 Group A, B and C posts, 39 of them Junior Assistant. |
| Deputation | Various Group A and B posts, advertised separately in February 2026, status of candidature published in July and the interview result in August 2026. |
| Limited Departmental Competitive Examination | For Senior Assistant, run through 2025 and 2026 with its own eligibility lists, admit cards, objection portal and select list. Open to the Board's own staff. |
| Contract | Research Associates, 30 posts filled by walk-in interaction in July and August 2026, and senior posts such as Executive Director advertised separately. |
So most of what appears on the notice board is not open direct recruitment, and a Junior Assistant candidate is watching for one kind of notice among four. Senior Assistant, the rung above, is filled in part by a departmental examination, which is the internal route a Junior Assistant would later take.
Everything is published on the NBEMS Vacancy Notice Board at natboard.edu.in under Recruitment: the advertisement, the corrigendum, the registration link, the scheme of examination, the schedule, the rescheduling notice and the result, dated, and nowhere else.
Exam Centres
NBEMS publishes no list of examination cities with the advertisement. The centre is allotted to each candidate and appears on the e-admit card, alongside a notice uploaded on natboard.edu.in in due course.
The Board reserves the right to cancel and change any examination city, state or centre, and to add others, depending on response, administrative feasibility or force majeure. There is no provision for changing a centre on request: no correspondence regarding a change of details is entertained at a later stage.
The schedule as fixed, and as moved
| Post | As scheduled, 24 August 2026 | As rescheduled, 1 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Assistant | 5 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon | 15 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon |
| Junior Accountant | 5 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. | 15 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. |
| Junior Programmer | 6 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon | 16 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon |
| Stenographer | 6 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. | 16 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. |
| Deputy Director (Medical) | 6 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. | 16 September 2026, 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. |
The whole examination moved ten days, keeping the same times and order. Note what the ordering allows: Junior Assistant and Junior Accountant are on the same day, morning and afternoon, so a candidate eligible for both could sit both. One eligible for Junior Assistant and Stenographer would have to travel across two days.
Inside the hall, the thing to plan for is the section lock: four sections of 50 questions and 45 minutes, with no proceeding to the next section early and no reviewing a finished one. PwBD candidates may request a scribe or compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour, arranging the scribe themselves and ensuring the scribe's qualification is not higher than the minimum prescribed for the examination.
The Stage-II schedule shall be uploaded on natboard.edu.in in due course, with its own notice and its own admit cards. It has not been announced.
Important Dates
This cycle is live. The application window has closed, the scheme of examination is published, and the Junior Assistant Computer Based Test is fixed for 15 September 2026.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Advertisement dated | 2 June 2026 |
| Date of issue, as printed in its own table | 27 June 2026 |
| Corrigendum moving the application dates | 29 June 2026 |
| Online application opened, with the registration link | 7 July 2026 |
| Online application closed | 31 July 2026, 23:59 |
| Crucial date for eligibility, as printed in the advertisement | 20 July 2026 |
| Scheme and syllabus for Junior Programmer published | 14 August 2026 |
| Scheme of examination for Stage-I published | 20 August 2026 |
| Examination schedule published | 24 August 2026 |
| Rescheduling notice | 1 September 2026 |
| Stage-I Computer Based Test, Junior Assistant | 15 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon |
| Stage-II Computer Knowledge and Skill Test | To be uploaded on the website in due course |
Two intervals are worth reading. The scheme of examination, which is where the section lock was first disclosed, came on 20 August, three weeks after applications closed and twelve days before the original examination date. Anyone who prepared before that had assumed a conventional three-hour paper. And the postponement came on 1 September, four days' notice of a date that had been fixed a week earlier.
Still to come: the Stage-I result, the Stage-II schedule, and the final merit list on the total of both stages, valid for one year or until the next selection. All of it on the NBEMS Vacancy Notice Board, where every notice in this cycle has appeared. NBEMS publishes no annual calendar.
Admit Card
NBEMS issues an e-admit card, downloaded and printed by the candidate from natboard.edu.in. It is not posted and not e-mailed. The date, time and venue are intimated twice over: by a notice uploaded on the website, and on the admit card itself. Stage-II has its own admit cards, with the Computer Knowledge and Skill Test schedule to be uploaded in due course.
Discrepancies are fixed by telephone, immediately. Where the particulars, photograph or signature differ between the admit card and the confirmation page, contact the helpline at once. That is the only correction route at this stage, since nothing in the application form can be edited after submission.
Watch the website, because the date can move. This examination was scheduled on 24 August for 5 September and rescheduled on 1 September to 15 September, four days before the original date.
PwBD candidates may request a scribe or compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour, arranging the scribe themselves and ensuring their qualification is not higher than the minimum prescribed. They must attend every stage whenever called, or may be disqualified, and a disability certificate for not less than 40 per cent must be produced when the selecting authority asks.
An admit card settles nothing about eligibility. If it is detected at any stage that a candidate does not fulfil the norms, or has suppressed, twisted or truncated any material fact, the candidature stands cancelled without reasons and without notice; detected after appointment, services are liable to be terminated and the candidate liable for criminal proceedings.
Result
No result exists for this cycle yet. The Stage-I Computer Based Test for Junior Assistant is fixed for 15 September 2026 and had not been held when this was checked.
The advertisement is explicit about where it will appear: the result of examination shall be displayed only on the website www.natboard.edu.in and information with regard to the next stage of examination shall be made available on the website.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Stage-I result | On natboard.edu.in. A candidate must clear 40 per cent if SC, ST, PwBD or ex-servicemen, 50 per cent otherwise, of the 200 marks. |
| Shortlisting for Stage-II | Five candidates per vacancy in each category, in Stage-I merit order. For 39 vacancies, roughly 195 candidates. |
| Stage-II schedule | Uploaded in due course, with its own admit cards. |
| Stage-II result | The same 40 and 50 per cent floors, on its 100 marks. |
| Final merit list | On the total of both stages, out of 300. Ties go to the older candidate. |
Both floors must be cleared separately: clearing Stage-I does not carry into Stage-II. The merit or select list holds good for one year, or until the next selection, whichever is earlier.
NBEMS keeps wide powers over the result. It may fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all parts of the papers in either stage, so a sectional cut-off can be imposed on any of the four Stage-I sections. It may alter the number of vacancies, modify the examination process and fix the cut-off without assigning reasons, and the vacancies may increase, decrease or be withdrawn without prior notice. And a selection can still be undone: eligibility failures or suppressed material facts detected at any stage, including after appointment, mean cancellation without notice and liability for criminal proceedings. Appointment is also subject to the character condition and a medical certificate of physical fitness.
What the Board's result practice looks like elsewhere, from the same period: for the Senior Assistant departmental examination it published a provisional list of eligible and ineligible candidates, a final list, an admit card notice, a challenge and objection management portal, a partial modification notice and then a list of selected candidates.
Cut Off
NBEMS fixes its qualifying marks in the advertisement, in advance, and they are the same for both stages. No closing mark for this cycle exists yet, because the examination has not been held.
| Category | Stage-I, out of 200 | Stage-II, out of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen | 40 per cent, 80 marks | 40 per cent, 40 marks |
| All others | 50 per cent, 100 marks | 50 per cent, 50 marks |
Both have to be cleared separately. But clearing 50 per cent does not get a candidate to Stage-II: only five candidates per vacancy in each category are called, in Stage-I merit order. The mark that closes each category is the mark of the hundredth UR candidate, the thirty-fifth SC candidate and so on, and that is set by the field, not by the advertisement. On a 200-mark paper with negative marking, taken by a 10+2 field for 39 posts, expect it well above the published floor.
What a guess is worth
Stage-I deducts 0.25 for a wrong answer against one mark for a right one. On a four-option question a blind guess is worth +0.06, one option eliminated +0.17, two eliminated +0.38, and a blank is worth nothing. All positive, so on expectation nothing is worth leaving blank, but six hundredths of a mark over twenty guesses is barely over one mark and swings widely. Eliminate before guessing, and remember the section lock: a question skipped in section two cannot be returned to in the third hour.
A sectional cut-off is possible and unannounced
The Selection Committee has discretion to fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all parts of the papers, with its decision final. The paper is four equal sections of 50 marks, so that power could be exercised on any one of them.
One number can still move: the advertisement says the vacancies may increase, decrease or be withdrawn without prior notice, and that NBEMS may fix the cut-off without assigning reasons. Plan around the 1:5 ratio rather than a figure you expect to be honoured.
Preparation Tips
1. The section lock changes everything, and it was announced late
Four sections of 50 questions and 45 minutes each, with no moving into the next section early and no returning to a finished one. There is no time to bank and nothing to come back to.
- Budget within the section, not across the paper. Fifty questions in 45 minutes is 54 seconds each.
- A question skipped is a question lost. Decide inside the section; the third hour will not let you back into the first.
- Finishing early wins nothing. Spend the remaining time on that section's doubtful answers.
- Your weakest section cannot be starved. It gets 45 minutes whether you want them or not, and the Board may impose a sectional qualifying mark on it.
Note how late this arrived. The scheme of examination came on 20 August 2026, after applications closed on 31 July. Anyone who prepared before that had assumed a conventional three-hour paper.
Practise with four locked 45-minute timers: no looking ahead, no going back. A generic mock will not reproduce the lock, and the lock is what costs marks on the day.
2. The four sections are equal, so treat them equally
Reasoning 50, General Awareness 50, Quantitative Aptitude 50, English Comprehension 50. No section outweighs another and each has its own block, so the usual tactic of loading effort on to a high-weight section has nothing to bite on.
3. Eliminate before you guess
At +1 and −0.25, a blind guess among four is worth +0.06 and two options eliminated is worth +0.38. Everything is positive on expectation, but a blind guess earns almost nothing and adds variance.
4. Do not treat the skill test as a formality
Stage-II is 100 marks against Stage-I's 200, added for the final merit. A third of the total. It ranks rather than merely qualifies, so strong data entry and word processing genuinely moves a candidate up. Its floor is the same 40 or 50 per cent and must be cleared separately. Seventy-five minutes, covering data entry, word processing and computer operation, on the ground the essential qualification points at: Windows or a network operating system, and LAN architecture.
5. Aim at the 1:5 shortlist, not at the qualifying mark
Fifty per cent of 200 gets you into the reckoning. What gets you to Stage-II is being inside five candidates per vacancy in your own category, about 195 across the board. The qualifying mark and the closing mark are different numbers and only one is published.
6. Both stages are compulsory and there is no exemption
The advertisement says it twice, and warns PwBD candidates separately that failing to appear when called may disqualify them.
7. The paper is bilingual, which is worth using
English Comprehension is necessarily in English, but the other three sections can be read in whichever language you are faster in. Under a 54-second clock, reading speed is worth real marks.
8. Watch the website, because this cycle has already moved once
Scheduled on 24 August for 5 September, rescheduled on 1 September to 15 September. The Stage-II schedule has not been announced and will appear the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NBEMS Junior Assistant recruitment open now?
The cycle is live but the application window has closed. Advertisement No. A-12011/3/2025-Estb of 2 June 2026 took applications from 7 to 31 July 2026, and the Stage-I test is fixed for 15 September 2026, 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, rescheduled from 5 September.
Who conducts it?
NBEMS itself, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Not an SSC examination, no commission involved. Every notice appears on the NBEMS Vacancy Notice Board at natboard.edu.in.
How many vacancies are there?
39 Junior Assistant posts of the 53 in the advertisement: UR 20, SC 07, OBC 06, ST 03 including one backlog, EWS 03, with 02 earmarked for PwBD and 03 for ex-servicemen. It is the only post in the notice with an SC reservation.
What is the selection process?
Two stages and no interview. Stage-I: 200 questions in 180 minutes for 200 marks, 0.25 negative marking. Stage-II: Computer Knowledge and Skill Test, 100 marks in 75 minutes. The final merit is the total of both.
What is the section lock?
Stage-I is four sections of 50 questions and 45 minutes each. You cannot proceed to the next section until the previous one's time is complete, and cannot review or modify a section after its time has passed. The next section starts automatically. NBEMS published this in its scheme of examination on 20 August 2026.
What is the syllabus?
Four equal sections of 50 marks: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension. The paper is at 10+2 level, in both English and Hindi.
Does the skill test count towards the merit?
Yes. Stage-II carries 100 marks against Stage-I's 200, and the merit is the total. In most clerical recruitments a skill test only qualifies; here it ranks. Both stages also carry separate minimum qualifying marks.
What are the qualifying marks?
40 per cent for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen, 50 per cent for everyone else, in each stage. Clearing the floor is not enough to reach Stage-II: only five candidates per vacancy in each category are called, about 195 for 39 posts.
What qualification and age are required?
A pass in the Senior Secondary Examination from a recognised Board or University, proficiency in computers and basic software packages such as Windows or a network operating system and working in LAN architecture, and qualifying the examination NBEMS prescribes. Age 18 minimum and below 27 on the closing date, with 5 years relaxation for SC and ST, 3 for OBC, 10 to 15 for PwBD, and up to 35 or 40 for widowed, divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried.
What does it cost to apply?
₹1,500 plus 18 per cent GST for UR and OBC, and nil for SC, ST, PwBD and all women. Bank charges extra, non-refundable, and if the fee reaches the bank after the last date the candidature is rejected for non-payment.
Is there an interview?
No. The advertisement states that no interview for Group B and C posts shall be held for selection.
How are ties broken, and how long does the list last?
The older candidate is placed above, with no second rung. The merit or select list holds good for one year, or until the next selection, whichever is earlier.
Can I skip the skill test if my Stage-I score is high?
No. Only candidates who participate in all stages are considered, and no exemption is granted to any candidate. PwBD candidates are warned separately that failing to appear when called may disqualify them.
Can I correct my application after submitting it?
No field can be edited or deleted after submission, and no correspondence about a change of details is entertained. The only correction route is a discrepancy between the admit card and the confirmation page in particulars, photograph or signature, which goes to the helpline immediately.
Does NBEMS publish previous year papers?
No, and no answer key either. What it publishes is the scheme of examination and the syllabus, which together are precise enough to reproduce the paper, section lock included.
