NVS PGT Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
97 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Post Graduate Teachers in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas teach Classes XI and XII. The schools are fully residential, so the job also covers house duties, evening study and escorting students, and NVS pays a 10% special allowance for that on top of normal pay.
The current round is Recruitment Notification 01/2025, which CBSE ran for both NVS and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. It lists 1,513 PGT posts in NVS across twelve subjects and another 18 for Modern Indian Languages. The Tier-1 and Tier-2 papers are done. Tier-2 results came out subject by subject between 17 August and 5 September 2026, and shortlisted candidates now go to interview.

Exam Pattern
Tier-1 (qualifying screening, OMR)
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Reasoning | 20 | 60 |
| Numeric Ability | 20 | 60 |
| Basic Computer Literacy | 20 | 60 |
| General Knowledge | 20 | 60 |
| English language competency | 10 | 30 |
| One other Indian language (chosen when applying) | 10 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 300 |
Two hours. Each question carries 3 marks and a wrong answer costs 1. Questions are set at post-graduate level for PGTs. Candidates go through to Tier-2 at ten times the vacancies in each category.
Tier-2 (subject knowledge)
Two and a half hours, 100 marks: 60 objective questions of one mark each (minus 0.25 for a wrong answer) and 10 descriptive questions worth 40 marks together. It is bilingual, except the Modern Indian Language papers, which are in that language.
Interview
100 marks. Final merit is 85% Tier-2 and 15% interview.
Syllabus
Tier-1 is general: reasoning, numerical ability, computer basics, general knowledge, English, and one Indian language from a list of twelve (Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu). The language chosen on the form cannot be changed.
Tier-2 is the subject itself at post-graduate level. The notification says the detailed subject syllabus goes up on the KVS and NVS sites under Recruitment.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master's degree with at least 50% in the subject, or an integrated PG course with B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognised institution.
- B.Ed. with 50%, or a three-year integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed., or a four-year integrated degree with a B.Ed. component.
- Able to teach in Hindi and English.
- Upper age limit 40. SC/ST get 5 years, OBC (NCL) 3, women 10, regular NVS staff 5.
Subject rules differ. PGT Computer Science needs an M.Sc. (CS/IT), MCA, or M.E./M.Tech. in CS/IT with 50%, plus B.Ed. PGT Physical Education in NVS needs an M.P.Ed. with 50%; it has no B.Ed. requirement. An M.Com. in Applied or Business Economics does not count for PGT Commerce. For PGT Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Economics, History, Geography and Biology you must have studied the subject at graduation too.
Corrigendum II of 4 December 2025 aligned the PGT English, Hindi and Commerce rules for KVS and NVS, so one application could cover both.
Selection Process
- Tier-1 screening.
- Tier-2 subject paper.
- Interview, for candidates shortlisted at three times the vacancies.
- Merit list at 85:15, then document verification.
Because KVS and NVS share one merit list, candidates on both lists fill a preference online, and each person is given only one post. NVS teachers can be posted anywhere in India.
Salary
Pay Level 8 (₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100) with the usual central allowances, plus 10% special allowance for residential duties in a JNV. Rent-free campus housing is given where available.
How to Apply
Applications were online only, on the CBSE-run portal. Fee: ₹1,500 exam fee plus ₹500 processing fee. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen pay only the ₹500. Within PGT you could pick only one subject. Applying for the same post in both KVS and NVS needed one fee.
