Railway GDCE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility

152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

The General Departmental Competitive Examination is an internal railway examination. It is not open to the public. A zonal railway's Railway Recruitment Cell runs it, not the Railway Recruitment Boards, and only regular serving employees of that zone and its production units may apply.

The notification described here is GDCE Notification No. 01/2023 of RRC Northern Railway, dated 28 July 2023, which covered regular employees of Northern Railway, Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, Modern Coach Factory Raebareli and Diesel Loco Modernization Works Patiala. Each zonal RRC issues its own, with its own vacancies and eligible establishments, so read your own zone's notification for the numbers. The machinery below is common to all of them.

ItemDetail
Notification GDCE No. 01/2023, RRC Northern Railway, 28 July 2023
Who may apply Regular serving employees of Northern Railway, RCF Kapurthala, MCF Raebareli and DMW Patiala, except RPF and RPSF
Posts Assistant Loco Pilot, Goods Train Manager, Technicians and Junior Engineers of various departments
Total vacancies 323, split UR 167, OBC 83, SC 44, ST 22 and EWS 7
Age as on 1 January 2024 Up to 42 for UR, 45 for OBC and 47 for SC and ST
Stages Single stage Computer Based Test, then an Aptitude Test where applicable, then Document Verification and Medical Examination

Two rules define the scheme. Employees in lower grades may sit for all categories; employees in the same grade may sit only for a move from Non-Safety to Safety, or Safety to Safety. And nobody may apply for the post they already hold. GDCE is a promotion route by examination, into a higher grade or sideways into a safety category, for people already in railway service.

That is why the age limits look nothing like an open recruitment's. An RRB notice for ALP or Junior Engineer closes at around 33; GDCE runs to 42, 45 or 47, because everyone sitting it already has railway service behind them.

Two different papers follow. ALP and Technician candidates sit a two-part CBT where only Part A counts; Junior Engineer candidates sit one 150-question paper of which 100 are technical. Negative marking is one third of a mark, and the rank is published as a Merit Index rather than a percentage.

Exam Pattern

A single stage Computer Based Test, followed by an Aptitude Test wherever applicable, then Document Verification and Medical Examination. Selection is strictly on merit from those stages. The CBT carries questions and answer options only in English and Hindi.

ALP and Technician: two parts, one of which counts

Part APart B
Questions10075
Duration90 minutes60 minutes
NatureCounts towards merit Qualifying only
Qualifying markThe community minimum 35 per cent, for all candidates, no relaxation permissible
Content Mathematics; General Intelligence and Reasoning; Basic Science and Engineering; General Awareness The DGET trade syllabus in the candidate's own trade

The marks scored in Part A alone are used for shortlisting, subject to qualifying Part B. Part B can only remove you.

The Aptitude Test, for Assistant Loco Pilot only

ItemWhat the notification says
Who is called Candidates equal to 8 times the number of ALP vacancies for each community, on Part A performance subject to qualifying Part B
Qualifying mark A minimum score of 42 in each of the test batteries, for all candidates, with no relaxation permissible
Negative markingNone in the Aptitude Test
Weight in the merit 70 per cent Part A, 30 per cent Aptitude Test, and the ALP merit list is drawn only from candidates who qualify the Aptitude Test

For question patterns and other details of the Aptitude Test the notification names one source: RDSO, under Directorates, Psycho Technical Directorate, Candidates Corner.

Junior Engineer: one paper of 150

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Technical Abilities100 100
General Awareness1515
Physics and Chemistry1515
Basics of Computers and Applications1010
Basics of Environment and Pollution Control1010
Total150150

120 minutes, with a virtual calculator on the monitor, which is 48 seconds a question against 54 seconds in Part A of the ALP and Technician paper. The section split is indicative, and the notification allows some variation in the actual paper.

Negative marking and the qualifying minimums

One third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer in the CBT, so three wrong answers cancel one right one. There is no negative marking in the Aptitude Test. The minimum qualifying percentages are UR 40, OBC-NCL 30, SC 30 and ST 25, relaxable by 2 per cent for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against reserved vacancies.

The RRC fixes the date, time and venue for every activity, and entertains no request for postponement or for a change of venue, date or shift. Nor is there any supplementary examination for absentees.

Syllabus

The syllabus comes from three different places, and the notification says where each part is: Part A and the Junior Engineer common sections are printed in the notification itself; Part B is the DGET trade syllabus, obtained from the Director General of Employment and Training's website; and Technical Abilities for Junior Engineer refers to the annexures of the RRB's own Junior Engineer notice.

Part A, for ALP and Technician

  • Mathematics: number system, BODMAS, decimals, fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, elementary statistics, square root, age calculations, calendar and clock, and pipes and cistern.
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: analogies, alphabetical and number series, coding and decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagram, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, similarities and differences, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, and statement, arguments and assumptions.
  • Basic Science and Engineering: engineering drawing (projections, views, drawing instruments, lines, geometric figures, symbolic representation), units and measurements, mass weight and density, work power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy.
  • General Awareness: current affairs in science and technology, sports, culture, personalities, economics, politics and other subjects of importance.

Part B: which trade you sit

QualificationTrade to select for Part B
Electrical Engineering and its streams Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Wireman, Winder (Armature), or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
Electronics Engineering and its streams Electronics Mechanic, or Mechanic Radio and TV
Mechanical Engineering and its streams Fitter, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Tractor Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Turner, Machinist, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Heat Engine, or Millwright Maintenance Mechanic
Automobile Engineering and its streams Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Tractor Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Heat Engine, or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
HSC (10+2) with Physics and Mathematics The special trade Physics and Mathematics

Choosing the wrong trade voids the application. A candidate qualified at 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics but without an ITI, Act Apprenticeship or diploma is eligible only for Technician-III Telecommunication and Technician-III Signal, and must choose the Physics and Mathematics trade; if they choose any other trade they will not be considered for any of the posts. A candidate with a diploma or degree but no ITI or Act Apprenticeship is considered for the ALP post only.

The Junior Engineer paper

  • Technical Abilities, 100 of the 150 marks, from the annexures of the RRB's Junior Engineer notice. The exam group is fixed by a discipline mapping table that groups the engineering streams into Mechanical and Allied, Electrical and Allied, Electronics and Allied and the rest.
  • General Awareness: current affairs, Indian geography, culture and history including the freedom struggle, Indian polity and constitution, Indian economy, environmental issues in India and the world, sports, and general scientific and technological developments.
  • Physics and Chemistry: up to 10th standard CBSE syllabus.
  • Basics of Computers and Applications: architecture of computers, input and output devices, storage devices, networking, operating systems including Windows, Unix and Linux, MS Office, data representation, internet and email, websites and web browsers, and computer virus.
  • Basics of Environment and Pollution Control: adverse effects of environmental pollution and control strategies, air, water and noise pollution, waste management, global warming, acid rain and ozone depletion.

The two papers test different things: mathematics and reasoning are half of Part A and absent from the Junior Engineer paper, while technical content carries the Junior Engineer paper and none of Part A. Prepare the one you opted for, because post preference once opted is final.

Eligibility Criteria

Who may sit it

  • Only serving regular employees of the notifying zone and its listed production units, holding the prescribed educational or technical qualification for the post.
  • Employees in grades lower than the grade being recruited are eligible for all categories.
  • Employees in the same grade or pay scale are eligible only for a move from Non-Safety to Safety, or Safety to Safety.
  • Nobody may apply for the post they are presently working on.
  • RPF and RPSF personnel are not eligible, under Railway Board's letter No. E(NG)I/2002/PM2/9 dated 11 August 2003.
  • An employee declared medically unfit at initial appointment in the standard prescribed for the post applied for need not apply.

Age

CategoryUpper age limitDate of birth not earlier than
UR42 years2 January 1982
OBC45 years2 January 1979
SC and ST47 years2 January 1977

Reckoned as on 1 January 2024, with the lower date of birth 1 January 2006 for every category. No age relaxation is allowed to SC, ST or OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies.

Educational qualification, and the condition unique to an internal exam

The minimum qualification prescribed for the post, from a recognised Board, University or Institute, held as on the closing date for online application. And then: the qualification must also be endorsed in the Service Sheet of the employee. A qualification acquired but never recorded in the service record is not usable here. Anyone awaiting the result of the final examination should not apply.

  • Assistant Loco Pilot: Matriculation plus an ITI in a specified trade or Act Apprenticeship, or a Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering in lieu of the ITI. The specified trades are Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright or Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio and TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature and Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel) and Heat Engine.
  • Technician: Matriculation or SSLC plus an ITI from a recognised NCVT or SCVT institution in the relevant trade, or Matriculation or SSLC plus a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the same course.
  • Junior Engineer: a three year Diploma in the relevant engineering discipline, or a degree, from a recognised University or Institute, with the discipline mapped to an exam group.

Medical standards

From A-1 for Assistant Loco Pilot through A-3 for Junior Engineer to B-1 for the technician grades. The standards are in Chapter 5 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual, Volume I, and a candidate who fails the prescribed medical fitness will not be considered suitable for empanelment.

Reservation

SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates furnish caste certificates in the prescribed formats at Document Verification. An OBC-NCL certificate must state that the candidate is not in the creamy layer, must carry the prescribed declaration, and must not be older than one year at Document Verification. A candidate who does not comply is considered under General (UR) vacancies only.

There is no separate reservation for Economically Weaker Sections in GDCE, per Railway Board's letter No. E(NG)I-2018/PM1/23 dated 2 May 2019.

Admission to every stage is purely provisional. If information is found false or incorrect, or relevant information suppressed, the candidature is rejected forthwith, and a candidate already appointed is liable to be removed from service summarily.

Selection Process
  1. Online application, then a printout signed by the immediate supervisor and the controlling officer and uploaded as a PDF.
  2. Single stage Computer Based Test. Two parts for ALP and Technician, one paper for Junior Engineer. See Exam pattern for the marks and timings.
  3. Computer Based Aptitude Test, for Assistant Loco Pilot only, at 8 times the ALP vacancies per community.
  4. Document Verification for candidates equal to the number of vacancies, and Medical Examination.
  5. Allotment of post on merit cum option, final and binding.

Document Verification and after

  • Candidates are called on CBT merit and their options, in number equal to the vacancies.
  • Where two candidates have the same marks, the older is placed higher; where the age is also the same, by alphabetical order of the name. In an examination whose candidates run to 42, 45 and 47, that tie-break settles more cases than it would in an open recruitment.
  • Allotment is on merit cum option, final and binding, and no appeal is entertained. Post preference once opted is final and no change is permissible at any stage.
  • Appointment is subject to final verification of educational, medical and service particulars, community certificates, and verification of antecedents and character.

RRC verifies originals only after a candidate has qualified every stage. Until then admission to all stages is purely provisional, and mere issue of an e-call letter does not mean the candidature has been accepted. The RRC may reject a candidature at any stage, and a candidate who has already been appointed is liable to be removed from service summarily.

Malpractice, and what it costs

The notification's language here is harder than an open recruitment's, because the candidate is an employee. Using unfair means, sending someone else to sit the paper, or attempting to impersonate brings debarment from all examinations of all the RRCs and RRBs for lifetime, in addition to departmental disciplinary action, and the candidate is liable for legal prosecution. For a serving employee that ends a career, not an attempt.

Banned at the venue: mobile phones, bluetooth devices, pen drives, laptops, calculators, wrist watches or any other communication device, and also pen or pencil, wallets and purses, belts, shoes and metallic wear including ornaments. Any infringement brings summary rejection besides legal action and debarment, and safe keeping cannot be assured at the venue.

And there is no supplementary examination, CBT or Aptitude Test, for absentees under any circumstances.

Salary

GDCE is a promotion, so the pay is the pay of the post. A notification advertises existing Group C posts at their 7th CPC pay level, and a successful candidate moves into that level from the one they currently hold. The 2023 Northern Railway notification carried:

PostPay Level (7th CPC)Medical standard
Assistant Loco PilotLevel 2 A-1
Technician-III in various tradesLevel 2B-1
Goods Train ManagerLevel 5
Junior Engineer in various departmentsLevel 6 A-3
UROBCSCSTEWSTotal
1678344227323

The largest single block was 169 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies, at Level 2 and medical standard A-1.

Pay matters less here than in an open recruitment, because every candidate is already a railway employee drawing a salary. What GDCE offers is a move into a higher grade, or from a non-safety category into a safety one, without waiting for seniority-based promotion. Getting the preference order wrong is the expensive mistake: allotment is on merit cum option, final and binding, with no appeal, and post preference once opted cannot be changed at any stage.

How to Apply

The application is online only, through the RRC website, for Northern Railway rrcnr.org. But it does not end there: after filling the form online you must print it, get it signed by your immediate supervisor and controlling officer, and upload the signed PDF.

That second deadline is the one people miss. In the 2023 cycle the form closed on 28 August 2023 and the signed PDF was due by 1 September 2023, four days later. An application without that upload is not before the RRC.

  • One online application only, common to all the notified posts.
  • Eligibility is judged only on the information in the online application, and candidates need not post printouts or certificates to the RRC.
  • The educational qualification must be held as on the closing date and endorsed in the Service Sheet. Anyone awaiting a final result should not apply.
  • Keep your own mobile number and personal email active for the whole recruitment. Everything goes out by SMS and email, and no request to change the number or address is entertained after submission.
  • Register well before the closing date. The RRC accepts no responsibility for a candidate unable to register on the last day because of load on the website or any other reason.

What to have ready for Document Verification

  • Original educational and technical certificates, and the Service Sheet endorsement of the qualification.
  • Caste certificates in the prescribed formats. An OBC-NCL certificate must be no older than one year at Document Verification and must carry the non-creamy-layer declaration.
  • Service and medical particulars, verified along with antecedents and character before appointment.
Participating Institutes

A GDCE is run by the Railway Recruitment Cell of a single zonal railway, for its own employees. The 2023 notification invited applications from regular and eligible employees, except RPF and RPSF, of:

  • Northern Railway
  • Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala
  • Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli
  • Diesel Loco Modernization Works, Patiala

The RRC's correspondence on the examination went to establishments across the zone, including the Signal Workshop at Ghaziabad and the Locomotive Workshop at Charbagh, Lucknow, which gives a sense of how widely a zonal GDCE reaches.

GroupPosts in the 2023 notification
Running and technician Assistant Loco Pilot (169 vacancies), Goods Train Manager, and Technician-III in a range of trades
Supervisory Junior Engineer in various departments, including Junior Engineer / Permanent Way

Where the technical material comes from

A zonal RRC borrows the whole examination apparatus of the national system and applies it to an internal quota. The Part B trade syllabus is DGET's; the Technical Abilities section of the Junior Engineer paper refers to the annexures of the RRB's own Junior Engineer notice; and the Aptitude Test material is RDSO's, under the Psycho Technical Directorate, Candidates Corner.

Exam Centres

Every stage is a computer based test at a centre the RRC allots. The date, time and venue for all activities are fixed by the RRC and intimated to eligible candidates in due course, and a request for postponement, or for a change of venue, date or shift, is not entertained under any circumstances. Both the CBT and the Aptitude Test carry questions and answer options only in English and Hindi.

How the call reaches you

Candidates download the e-call letter, the city and date intimation and the travel authority, where applicable, from the links on the RRC website, and all communication goes by SMS and email to the registered number and address, which cannot be changed after submission. The RRC also publishes a centre-wise list of candidates for each examination date, so a candidate can see who is sitting where.

What you cannot take in

Mobile phones, bluetooth devices, pen drives, laptops, calculators, wrist watches and any other communication device, and also pen or pencil, wallets and purses, belts, shoes and metallic wear including ornaments. Any infringement brings summary rejection besides legal action and debarment from future examinations, and the venue cannot assure safe keeping of anything you bring.

There is no second chance at the paper: no supplementary examination, CBT or Aptitude Test is held for absentees under any circumstances.

Document Verification and the medical follow at a place the RRC notifies.

Important Dates
StepDate in the 2023 Northern Railway cycle
Notification issued and published on the RRC website 28 July 2023
Online registration and filling of application opens29 July 2023
Closing date for online registration and filling 28 August 2023
Last date for uploading the signed application PDF 1 September 2023
Computer Based Test Notified separately. The RRC published CBT notices for dates in December 2023 and went on publishing schedules and admit card notices through to a CBT on 10 September 2026 for the remaining candidates

Plan around that last row. A GDCE cycle runs for years, not months, with the RRC publishing successive notices, corrigenda, revised schedules and centre-wise lists as it works through the pool.

The two reference dates

  • 1 January 2024 for age: up to 42 for UR, 45 for OBC and 47 for SC and ST, with no relaxation for a reserved-category candidate applying against an unreserved vacancy.
  • The closing date for online application for the educational qualification, which must also be endorsed in the Service Sheet.

The dates that trip people

The application has two deadlines: the online form closes on one date, and the signed PDF, countersigned by the immediate supervisor and the controlling officer, is due on a later one. Contact details are frozen at submission and the RRC entertains no request to change them. There is no supplementary examination for absentees. And post preference, once opted, is final.

Everything appears on the RRC's own website; for Northern Railway, rrcnr.org.

Admit Card

Candidates download the e-call letter, the city and date intimation and the travel authority, where applicable, from the links on the RRC website, for Northern Railway rrcnr.org. There is no other channel, and the notification warns candidates to use only the official website and to be careful of fake websites and job racketeers.

Two details you cannot change

Keep your own mobile number and personal email active for the whole recruitment: the RRC sends everything by SMS and email, and entertains no request to change either after submission. On a cycle that can run three years, that is a long time to keep a number live.

The call letter proves nothing about eligibility

Mere issue of an e-call letter does not mean the candidature has been finally accepted. Eligibility is checked against originals only after every stage is qualified, and the RRC may reject a candidature at any stage.

PwBD candidates are to be provided a scribe wherever applicable, and the minimum qualifying percentages may be relaxed by 2 per cent for them where there is a shortage against reserved vacancies.

Result

What the result rests on depends on the post:

  • Technician: the marks in Part A of the CBT, subject to qualifying Part B.
  • Assistant Loco Pilot: 70 per cent of Part A and 30 per cent of the Aptitude Test, drawn only from candidates who qualify the Aptitude Test, and subject to qualifying Part B.
  • Junior Engineer: the marks in the 150-question CBT alone.

Where different exam groups compete for a common post the marks are converted to a Merit Index before ranking; the formula and its constants are under Cut-off details.

Announcements go up on the RRC's website, for Northern Railway rrcnr.org, and by SMS and email. Per stage the RRC publishes the city and date intimation, the e-call letter link, a question paper viewing notice with an objection tracker, then the result, the cut-off and the Document Verification notices.

A result settles nothing on its own. Admission to all stages is purely provisional, originals are checked only after every stage is qualified, and allotment of post on merit cum option is final and binding, with no appeal entertained.

Cut Off

There are three different thresholds in one examination, and only one of them bends by category.

CategoryMinimum percentage in the counted paper
UR40 per cent
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)30 per cent
SC30 per cent
ST25 per cent

Relaxable by 2 per cent for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against vacancies reserved for them. The other two thresholds do not relax for anyone: Part B of the ALP and Technician paper qualifies at a flat 35 per cent, and the Aptitude Test needs a minimum score of 42 in each test battery, battery by battery.

The Merit Index

Where candidates of different exam groups compete for a common post, GDCE does not compare raw marks. It computes a Merit Index, the relative score of a candidate within their discipline:

Merit Index = Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq)

TermMeaningValue
M Marks obtained: actual marks for a single session paper, normalised marks for a multi-session one
MqThe qualifying mark for a general category candidate 40
Mt The mean marks of the top 0.1 per cent, or the top 10, whichever is larger
SqThe score assigned to Mq350
StThe score assigned to Mt900

A candidate on exactly the qualifying mark gets 350, one on the mean of the top group gets 900, and everyone else falls between or beyond by linear interpolation. The index is computed for candidates at or above their community qualifying mark, and a combined merit list across disciplines and exam groups is built in descending order of it. That is why a GDCE score is an index, not a percentage.

How many go through, and how ties break

To the Aptitude Test, 8 times the number of ALP vacancies per community. To Document Verification, candidates equal to the number of vacancies. Where marks tie, the older candidate ranks higher, and if the age ties too, by alphabetical order of the name.

No general cut-off figure exists. Each zonal RRC publishes its own after each cycle, on its own website, and the figures differ by zone, by post and by exam group. Any number circulating as a "Railway GDCE cut-off" is not one a railway has published.

Preparation Tips

Work out which paper you are sitting

If you are applying forYou sitAnd the counted paper is
TechnicianPart A and Part B Part A only, 100 general questions
Assistant Loco PilotPart A, Part B and the Aptitude Test 70 per cent Part A, 30 per cent Aptitude Test
Junior EngineerOne paper of 150 questions All of it, and 100 of the 150 are technical

For ALP and Technician, the trade paper cannot help you

Part B qualifies at 35 per cent with no relaxation, and its marks never enter the merit. Get it to a comfortable pass from the DGET trade syllabus and put the rest of the time into Part A, the only thing that ranks you. Basic Science and Engineering is broader than it sounds, running from engineering drawing to occupational safety and IT literacy.

For Junior Engineer, do not skip the cheap 20 marks

Technical Abilities is 100 of 150, so most preparation goes there. But the other 50 are General Awareness 15, Physics and Chemistry 15, Basics of Computers 10 and Basics of Environment 10, and the last two are short, well defined and routinely left alone. There is a virtual calculator on the monitor in this paper.

Do not guess

Three wrong answers cancel one right one in the CBT. The Aptitude Test has no negative marking, so that is the one place to attempt everything, and it needs 42 in every battery with no relaxation while carrying 30 per cent of an ALP candidate's merit.

Get the paperwork right first

  • Your qualification must be endorsed in your Service Sheet. If it is not, get it recorded before you apply.
  • The application must be printed, signed by your immediate supervisor and controlling officer, and uploaded as a PDF by a date after the form itself closes.
  • Post preference once opted is final and allotment is binding with no appeal, so think about the order before you submit.
  • Your mobile number and email cannot be changed after submission, on a cycle that may run three years.

Check your grade and your medical before you invest

In a lower grade you are eligible for all categories; in the same grade only for a Non-Safety to Safety or Safety to Safety move; never for the post you hold; and not at all if you are RPF or RPSF. Medical standards run from A-1 for ALP to A-3 for Junior Engineer and B-1 for technician grades, and an employee declared unfit at initial appointment in the standard prescribed for the post applied for need not apply.

Practise on the nearest published papers

Material written for the RRB's open ALP or Junior Engineer notices is the closest practice available, since GDCE borrows both the syllabus and the aptitude machinery. Check it treats Part B as qualifying at 35 per cent and mentions the Merit Index; the eligibility and age limits in it will be the open notice's, not GDCE's.

Sample Papers

No previous year papers or sample papers are available for GDCE as of now. No zonal Railway Recruitment Cell publishes them; the RRC puts up a mock test notice before the CBT and a question paper viewing notice with an objection tracker after it.

For Northern Railway those notices appear at rrcnr.org, alongside the 2023 notification and its merit methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Railway GDCE?

The General Departmental Competitive Examination, an internal railway examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Cell of a zonal railway for regular serving railway employees. It is not open to the public.

Who can apply?

Only serving regular employees of the notifying zone and its listed production units, holding the prescribed qualification. Employees in lower grades are eligible for all categories; employees in the same grade only for a Non-Safety to Safety or Safety to Safety move. You cannot apply for the post you already hold, and RPF and RPSF personnel cannot apply at all.

What is the age limit?

In the 2023 Northern Railway notification, 42 years for UR, 45 for OBC and 47 for SC and ST, as on 1 January 2024. No age relaxation for SC, ST or OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies.

What posts does it cover?

In that notification: Assistant Loco Pilot (169 vacancies), Goods Train Manager, Technician-III in various trades and Junior Engineer in various departments. 323 vacancies in all.

What is the exam pattern?

ALP and Technician sit a CBT in two parts: Part A, 100 questions in 90 minutes, which counts, and Part B, 75 questions in 60 minutes, which only qualifies at 35 per cent with no relaxation. Junior Engineer sits one CBT of 150 questions in 120 minutes, of which 100 are Technical Abilities.

Is there negative marking?

Yes, one third of a mark for each wrong answer in the CBT. None in the Aptitude Test. Minimum qualifying marks are UR 40 per cent, OBC-NCL 30, SC 30 and ST 25, relaxable by 2 per cent for PwBD candidates against reserved vacancies.

Who takes the Aptitude Test?

Candidates who opted for Assistant Loco Pilot. They are called at 8 times the ALP vacancies per community, need 42 in each test battery with no relaxation, and are ranked 70 per cent Part A, 30 per cent Aptitude Test.

What is the Merit Index?

A candidate's relative score within their discipline, used because candidates sit different exam groups for a common post. Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq), with Mq 40, Sq 350, St 900 and Mt the mean marks of the top 0.1 per cent or the top 10, whichever is larger.

How do I apply?

Online on the RRC website, then print the application, get it signed by your immediate supervisor and controlling officer, and upload the signed PDF by a date a few days after the form closes. Your qualification must also be endorsed in your Service Sheet.

Can I change my post preference, or my phone number, later?

Neither. Post preference once opted is final and no change is permissible at any stage, and allotment on merit cum option is binding with no appeal. The RRC entertains no request to change a mobile number or email address after submission, and sends everything to them.

What if I miss the examination?

There is no supplementary examination, CBT or Aptitude Test for absentees under any circumstances. Being caught cheating or impersonating brings lifetime debarment from all RRC and RRB examinations, departmental disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

How long does a GDCE cycle take?

Years. The 2023 Northern Railway notification of 28 July 2023 was still generating schedules, admit card notices and centre-wise lists for a CBT held in September 2026.
