Exam Pattern

The written test has two parts.

PartContentQuestionsMarksTime
ACompulsory Tamil Language Eligibility Test, Class 10 level305030 minutes
BLanguage, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science, 30 each, up to Class 10 level1501503 hours

Part A is qualifying only and needs 20 marks (40 per cent); its marks are not used for ranking. In Part B General candidates needed 60 marks and reserved categories 45 for eligibility. Minority-language posts are written in English medium. Differently abled candidates can be exempted from Part A.

Syllabus

TRB follows the 2023 syllabus for SGT and BT Assistants, set to the Class 10 standard in Tamil or the minority language, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. The Tamil Language Eligibility Test has its own Class 10 syllabus. Both are on the TRB syllabus page.

Eligibility Criteria

Age on 1 July 2024: up to 53 for General, up to 58 for SC, ST, BC, BCM, MBC/DNC and destitute widows of all castes.

Education: Higher Secondary with 50 per cent and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (45 per cent allowed under NCTE norms), or a 4-year B.El.Ed., or a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education), or a graduate with the 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education. A valid TNTET Paper I certificate was also compulsory.

Double degrees, one-year additional degrees and holding two of the required qualifications at once make a candidate ineligible. Knowledge of Tamil is tested separately.

Selection Process

Selection is by the Part B score plus weightage for the TNTET pass, then certificate verification. The weightage is 0.5 mark for each year since the candidate first passed TNTET Paper I, so a 2012 pass earned 5.5 marks, 2017 earned 3 and 2022 earned 0.5. Candidates are called for certificate verification in the ratio 1:1.25 of vacancies, communal turn by turn. Tied cut-off scores are all called. The provisional selection list is then prepared on written marks, weightage and reservation rules.

Salary

Pay level 10, ₹20,600 to ₹75,900 per month plus allowances, as shown in the 2024 notification.

How to Apply

Applications were online only through the TRB portal. The fee was ₹600, or ₹300 for SC, SCA and ST candidates, non-refundable. All claims had to be backed by uploaded documents at the time of applying.

Preparation Tips

Part B is five Class 10 subjects at 30 questions each, so no subject can be skipped. Keep a few weeks for Tamil, since Part A must be cleared before Part B is even checked. If you passed TNTET Paper I long ago, the weightage helps, so keep the certificate safe.
