UP Police Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Direct recruitment of Constables in the Uttar Pradesh Police, run by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB), Lucknow, at uppbpb.gov.in.
| Governed by | The Uttar Pradesh Police Constable and Head Constable Service Rules, 2015, under the Police Act, 1861, as amended |
| Exam rule now in force | Rule 15(2), rewritten by the Fourth Amendment Rules, 2025, notified 31 December 2025 |
| Written exam | One objective paper, 300 marks |
| Qualifying marks | 30 per cent General, 25 EWS, 25 OBC, 20 SC and ST |
The rules have changed often: the 2015 rules replaced the 2008 rules (amended six times, 2009 to 2014), and have themselves been amended in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2025. Material from an earlier cycle can be describing a rule that no longer exists.
When last checked, the Board's Direct Recruitment page had no constable advertisement open for applications, only 55 posts of Programmer Grade-2, last date 31 January 2024. Recruitments already under way are run through its Notices page; in late September 2026 that carried PET dates and admit cards for the Constable (Civil Police) Direct Recruitment-2025. Posts, dates, syllabus and the detailed exam procedure come with each advertisement; the eligibility, exam shape, qualifying marks and stages below come from the rules and carry over between cycles.

Exam Pattern

| Subjects | General Knowledge, General Hindi, Numerical and Mental Ability, Mental Aptitude / I.Q., Reasoning Ability |
| Minimum qualifying marks | 30 per cent General, 25 per cent EWS, 25 per cent OBC, 20 per cent SC and ST |

What changed on 31 December 2025
The Fourth Amendment Rules, 2025 prints the old and new rule 15(2) side by side, in Hindi and English.
| Before | From 31 December 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper and marks | One objective paper, 300 | One objective paper, 300 |
| Minimum qualifying marks | None | 30, 25, 25 and 20 per cent by category |
| Negative marking | Rule said negative marks for wrong answers | That sentence is gone |
| Mode | Not specified | Board decides, computer based allowed |
| Normalization | Not provided for | Where there are several shifts or dates with different papers, "marks" means "normalized marks" throughout the rule |
The rule no longer says whether there's negative marking; it leaves the detailed procedure to the Board. Check the procedure and advertisement for your cycle. In a multi-shift cycle the qualifying percentages apply to normalized scores, and the Board publishes the normalization method in the advertisement.
Syllabus
The rules don't contain a syllabus. Rule 15(2) says the detailed syllabus will be decided by the Board and displayed on its own website, at uppbpb.gov.in. The rule fixes only the five subject areas and the 300 marks:
- General Knowledge
- General Hindi
- Numerical and Mental Ability
- Mental Aptitude / I.Q.
- Reasoning Ability
It doesn't split the marks between them, so don't assume a split from an older paper. The list is the same before and after the 2025 amendment.
Eligibility Criteria
Marital status (rule 12, rewritten in 2022)
The Third Amendment Rules, 2022, notified 18 October 2022, says: a person who has more than one spouse living, or who marries a person who already has a spouse living, is not eligible for appointment. The State Government can exempt someone on special grounds where the marriage is allowed under the personal law of both parties.
Written exam floor (since 2025)
| Category | Minimum | Out of 300 |
|---|---|---|
| General | 30 per cent | 90 |
| Economically Weaker Section | 25 per cent | 75 |
| Other Backward Classes | 25 per cent | 75 |
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe | 20 per cent | 60 |
In a multi-shift cycle these apply to the normalized score.
Age, education, physical standards and reservation
These sit in the rest of the service manual and its appendices, and are applied through each advertisement. Read them in the full rules on the Board's Recruitment Rules page rather than in a summary written for an earlier cycle.
Selection Process
- Scrutiny of applications. Only correct applications go on to the exam.
- Written exam, 300 marks, with the category-wise minimum.
- Scrutiny of records with a physical standard test. A forged, false or fabricated record can get your candidature cancelled.
- Physical efficiency test.
- Class 10 and 12 mark sheets of those on the select list are sent to the issuing boards for verification.
- Medical exam by the district police medical board, before training.
- Character verification before the appointment letter. An adverse finding makes you unsuitable.
The select list is prepared for one year, posted on the Board's website and sent to the appointing authority.
Ties are broken on total marks, then a preferential qualification listed in the rules (only one counts), then age (older first), then the English alphabetical order of your name as on your high school certificate.
The current physical standards and PET standards come with each advertisement, not the rule.
Salary
The pay scale is set by the State Government's pay rules and stated in each advertisement, not in the recruitment rules.
What the rules do cover: after the medical you go for basic and practical training, with a departmental exam at the end of basic training. Fail it at the final chance and you can be let go. You're on probation, and no increment is due until you've passed the departmental exam and finished probation. Confirmation follows.
All Head Constable posts in the Civil Police are filled by promotion from confirmed constables with the required service, through a selection committee. The final list goes up on the UP Police website.
How to Apply
Apply through the Board's Direct Recruitment page, which lists each open advertisement with the number of posts and the last date.
Check two things against yourself first: the marital status rule and the qualifying marks. Documents are checked several times, and a false one can end your candidature even after the select list.
The Government can revise the number of vacancies any time before the first exam, and cancel a recruitment at any stage without giving reasons.

| School boards | Verify Class 10 and 12 mark sheets |
The rules are made under section 46 of the Police Act, 1861, and published in the UP Extraordinary Gazette with an English translation under Article 348(3) of the Constitution, so you can read them in either language.
Exam Centres
Centres, number of days, and whether it's on paper or on screen are decided for each cycle and announced with the advertisement and the Board's published exam procedure on uppbpb.gov.in. The amended rule allows a single shift, several shifts or dates, or a computer based exam.
The medical exam is at the district police medical examination board, arranged by the appointing authority.
Important Dates
| Instrument | Date | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| Constable and Head Constable Service Rules, 2015 | 2 December 2015 | The rules now in force |
| First Amendment Rules, 2017 | 2017 | |
| Second Amendment Rules, 2018 | 18 June 2018 | |
| Third Amendment Rules, 2022 | 18 October 2022 | Rewrote rule 12, Marital Status |
| Fourth Amendment Rules, 2025 | 31 December 2025 | Rewrote rule 15(2): qualifying marks, computer based exams, multiple shifts, normalization |
Amendments take effect from publication in the Gazette.
No constable advertisement was open for applications when last checked (the only listing was Programmer Grade-2, closing 31 January 2024). Dates come with each advertisement on the Board's Direct Recruitment page, and stage-by-stage notices for a running recruitment on Notices.
Admit Card
Admit cards come from the Board for each cycle, with the download link posted on its Notices page. Bring what the notice asks for; the date and link are announced stage by stage.
Result
The Board prepares the select list against the vacancies and reservation policy, posts it on uppbpb.gov.in, and sends it to the appointing authority. It's valid for one year.
You can still be removed after the list: for a false record or mark sheet, an unsuccessful medical, an adverse character report, or failing the departmental exam in training at the final chance.
Cut Off
The Board doesn't publish closing marks in advance; the cut-off is wherever the posts in each category run out on the select list, which it posts on uppbpb.gov.in after each recruitment.
The fixed floor is the rule's qualifying mark: 90 (General), 75 (EWS and OBC) or 60 (SC and ST) out of 300, on normalized marks in a multi-shift cycle.
Preparation Tips
- Read the current rules, not a summary. The Fourth Amendment Rules, 2025 and Third Amendment Rules, 2022 each print the old and new text side by side.
- Know your floor: 90, 75 or 60 out of 300 by category.
- Use the Board's published syllabus for the five areas, not a split remembered from an older paper.
- Find the Board's detailed exam procedure before deciding whether to guess. The rule no longer says whether wrong answers are penalised.
- Expect normalization if the exam runs in several shifts. Your raw score won't tell you where you stand.
- Get your records in order early: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets are verified with the issuing board.
- The Board also publishes Important Court Decisions and Disposed Representations, worth reading before you make a representation of your own.
Sample Papers
No previous papers or sample papers are available from the Board as of now; its site has no section for them. What it does publish, free, is the full service manual with every amendment on its Recruitment Rules page, and the syllabus, exam procedure and notices for each cycle on Notices.
