Exam Pattern
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Mode | Online CBT, objective |
| Language | English and Hindi |
| Questions | 140 (the two Maintainer posts get 100) |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Negative marking | One third of a mark per wrong answer |
| Subjects | English, General Awareness, Logical Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, and knowledge of the discipline |
Each question carries equal marks, but the advertisement doesn't say how many, so the maximum score isn't published. There's no section-wise split either.
Stages
- CBT.
- Psycho Aptitude Test at Lucknow. It's qualifying only, and sixteen times the vacancies are called, category by category. SCTO is the only post in the notice with this stage.
- Iris verification, documents and medical for those who pass and rank high enough.
Your iris is scanned at the CBT (fingerprints if that fails) and checked again at every later stage. A mismatch at any point disqualifies you, and there's no other method of verifying you. UPMRC can also add an extra written stage if it needs to.
Syllabus
The advertisement names five areas: English, General Awareness, Logical Ability, Quantitative Aptitude and knowledge of the discipline. The general four have no further breakdown. The discipline half has its own post-wise syllabus, headed Electrical / Electronics and Telecommunication:
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Basic Electrical Engineering | DC and AC fundamentals, AC circuits, batteries, electromagnetic induction, constant voltage and current sources |
| Analog Electronics | Conductors, semiconductors and insulators, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, the p-n junction, rectifiers and filters, tunnel diodes, LEDs, varactor diodes, LCD, transistor configurations, FETs and MOSFETs |
| Control Systems | The longest entry in the list: open and closed loop systems, servo mechanisms, Laplace transform, transfer functions and block diagram reduction, Mason's formula and signal flow graphs, time response analysis and error constants, stability by Routh-Hurwitz, root locus and Bode plotting, multiloop control including feedforward, cascade, ratio and split range, and non-linear control systems with saturation, backlash, hysteresis, dead zone, limit cycles and jump resonance |
| Electronic Components and Materials | Conducting, insulating and magnetic materials and their properties and applications |
| Measuring Instruments | Measurement of resistance, inductance and capacitance, ammeter, voltmeter and multimeter, power and energy, frequency and phase difference |
| Principles of Instrumentation | Instrument selection: accuracy, precision, linearity, resolution, sensitivity, hysteresis, reliability, loading effect, cost effectiveness; static and dynamic response; calibration tools |
| Fundamentals of Digital Electronics | Number systems, gates, codes, arithmetic logic circuits, flip-flops, shift registers and counters |
| Basics of Microprocessors | Architecture, peripheral interface chips, the 8085 and an introduction to the 8086 |
| Power Electronics | Thyristors and other power electronic devices, controlled converters, inverters, choppers |
| Computer Aided Instrumentation | Bus types including ISA, EISA, PCI and GPIB, RS-232, signal conditioning, and parallel, serial and USB port interfacing |
| Quality and Reliability Techniques | Quality policy and total quality systems, and quality costs: prevention, appraisal, internal and external failure, and their impact on profitability |
| Electrical Machines | DC machines, single and three phase transformers, synchronous machines, three phase induction motors, fractional kW motors, AC series and reluctance motors |
| Generation, Transmission and Distribution | Types of power station, load, diversity and demand factors, tariffs, faults and short circuit current, switchgear and circuit breaker ratings, HRC fuses, earth leakage and overcurrent protection, Buchholz relay, the Merz-Price system, lightning arresters, and transmission and distribution systems |
| Utilisation of Electrical Energy | Illumination, electric heating, electric welding, electroplating, electric drives and motors |
It's a diploma-level syllabus, broad rather than deep. Control Systems and Generation, Transmission and Distribution take the most space. The psycho aptitude test has no syllabus.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualification
A three year engineering diploma in Electrical, Electronics or Electronics and Telecommunication, or equivalent, from a government recognised university or institute: 60 per cent for UR, EWS and OBC vacancies, 50 per cent for SC and ST. You must hold it by the closing date.
A B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc without a diploma in the relevant discipline is not eligible.
Age
21 to 28 on 1 March 2024. Relaxations, for UP domiciles only:
- SC, ST and OBC of UP: 5 years, for reserved posts only. Use it and you're counted only against a reserved post.
- Ex-servicemen of UP: service plus 3 years, up to 40, retired on or before 1 March 2024.
- UPMRC employees with 3 years' continuous service: up to 40 for UR and 45 for OBC, SC and ST.
Reservation is for UP domiciles only
If you're not originally domiciled in Uttar Pradesh, you're treated as unreserved. To claim any reservation you need a UP domicile certificate in the UP Government format. Women, ex-servicemen and dependants of freedom fighters of UP are horizontal categories. You get only one concession, whichever helps most. For a woman candidate, only a caste or domicile certificate from the father's side is valid. An OBC (NCL) certificate must be issued within one year of the closing date.
Medical
SCTO needs A-1 under the Indian Railway Medical Manual, including naked vision of 6/6. Candidates who have had Lasik surgery can't apply for SCTO; Lasik is allowed only for the non-technical executive and assistant posts. Fail the medical and your candidature is cancelled, with no alternative job offered.
You sit the CBT on your own declaration. If anything turns out false or doesn't meet the rules, you're out, even after appointment. Government, PSU or autonomous body employees need an NOC at document verification.
Selection Process
The CBT ranks you. The psycho aptitude test only qualifies you. Then come iris verification, documents and the A-1 medical.

| 20 March 2024, 10:00 hrs | Online registration opens |
| 19 April 2024, 23:59 hrs | Online registration closes |

| 17 to 20 May 2024, 23:55 hrs | Objection window on the question paper and answer keys |
| Thereafter | Cut-off notice and the list of candidates eligible for the Psycho Aptitude Test, shortlisted at 1:16 |
| 22 to 26 July 2024 | Psycho Aptitude Test, at Lucknow |
| Thereafter | Final result: candidates shortlisted for Iris verification, Document Verification and Medical Examination |
The psycho aptitude shortlist was drawn at 1:16 for the 155 vacancies, applying UP's vertical and horizontal reservation. After the objection window UPMRC revised the key and gave full marks to everyone for every question it found ambiguous. The final result then named those called for documents and medical, and a T-Score for SCTO was published on the portal.
Passing the CBT or being shortlisted gives no right to a job. Joining depends on UPMRC's project needs and a character and antecedents check. The merit list is valid for two years, extendable by one, and can be used for new UPMRC projects or other metro operations.
Salary
Pay is on the IDA (Industrial DA) pattern, plus the Corporation's perks and benefits. SCTO shares the Junior Engineer scale:
| Post code | Post | IDA pay scale | Medical | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E01 to E09 | Assistant Manager posts and Assistant Company Secretary | ₹50,000 to 1,60,000 | Executive | |
| NE 01 | Junior Engineer (Electrical) | ₹33,000 to 67,300 | A-1, not below A-3 | 88 |
| NE 02 | Junior Engineer (S&T) | ₹33,000 to 67,300 | A-1, not below A-3 | 44 |
| NE 03 | Station Controller cum Train Operator | ₹33,000 to 67,300 | A-1 | 155 |
| NE 04 | Account Assistant | ₹25,000 to 51,000 | C-1 | 8 |
| NE 05 | Office Assistant (Human Resource) | ₹25,000 to 51,000 | C-1 | 4 |
| NE 06 | Public Relation Assistant | ₹25,000 to 51,000 | C-1 | 4 |
| NE 07 | Maintainer (Electrical) | ₹19,500 to 39,900 | B-1 | 78 |
| NE 08 | Maintainer (S&T) | ₹19,500 to 39,900 | B-1 | 26 |
What joining costs
| Item | SCTO | For comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of training, deposited by demand draft before joining, non-refundable | ₹41,300, inclusive of GST at 18 per cent | Executive posts ₹94,400; Junior Engineers and the assistant posts ₹35,400; Maintainers ₹23,600 |
| Surety bond, to serve the corporation a minimum of three years | ₹1,50,000 | Executive posts ₹3,00,000; Maintainers ₹75,000 |
- The three years exclude leave without pay or extraordinary leave. Resigning needs three months' notice or pay in lieu, and the Corporation can refuse a resignation.
- Break the bond and it's forfeited. If you move to another government body, PSU or the Railways through proper channel, UPMRC won't transfer the bond; you pay it.
- Probation is two years including training. After that you're likely to be confirmed as permanent.
You may be posted anywhere in India.

Participating Institutes
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, formerly Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation, is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, based at Vipin Khand, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. It runs its own recruitment.
The 2024 advertisement covered Assistant Managers (executive), and Junior Engineers, SCTO, assistants and Maintainers (non-executive). All posts have a written test then documents and medical; only SCTO adds the psycho aptitude test. Assistant Managers of all posts must also train in train driving.
The SC/TO role is interchangeable as operations need: running metro trains, depot and operation control centres, customer care centres, and station upkeep. Junior Engineers can be deputed as SC/TO after training and passing the psychometric and medical tests.
Exam Centres
The CBT was held in Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mathura, Meerut, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Noida, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Basti and Sitapur, or any other UP city as needed. UPMRC can drop or add centres. The psycho aptitude test, document verification and medical are at Lucknow.
No travel costs are reimbursed for any stage or for joining. All dates and notices appear only on upmetrorail.com and its recruitment portal.

Watch UPMRC Careers for the next cycle; everything is announced there and nowhere else.
Admit Card
Admit cards and every later notice are on the recruitment portal linked from UPMRC Careers.
At the CBT, the psycho aptitude test and document verification, bring the admit card, one passport photo matching the one in your form, and an original photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence, voter ID, PAN or similar) matching the one you named in the form. If your exam-day photo doesn't match your form photo, you won't be let in.
Result
After the CBT, UPMRC publishes the response key with a short, portal-only objection window (absentees can't object), then the score card, the cut-off notice, the psycho aptitude shortlist, and finally the result for documents and medical, with call letters and a T-Score. All are on the portal linked from UPMRC Careers.
A place on the result doesn't guarantee a job. Failing the medical means no alternative post, and false information found later ends your service.
Cut Off
UPMRC published the marks of the last candidate shortlisted in the CBT for the psycho aptitude test, by category (cut-off notice, NE 03):
| Category | Cut-off, marks obtained by the last shortlisted candidate in the CBT |
|---|---|
| Unreserved | 214 |
| OBC | 172 |
| SC | 128 |
| EWS | 47 |
| ST | 18 |
| UR, women of UP | 92 |
| OBC, women of UP | 91 |
| SC, women of UP | 93 |
| ST, women of UP | 18 |
| EWS, women of UP | 44 |
| UR, ex-servicemen of UP | 40 |
| OBC, ex-servicemen of UP | 9 |
| SC, ex-servicemen of UP | 124 |
| UR, dependants of freedom fighters of UP | 22 |
| OBC, dependants of freedom fighters of UP | 22 |
| SC, dependants of freedom fighters of UP | 9 |
| ST, dependants of freedom fighters of UP | 66 |
| EWS, dependants of freedom fighters of UP | 114 |
The maximum mark isn't published, so read these as raw scores, not percentages. Small categories swing widely: ST had 5 vacancies against UR's 52, ex-servicemen 7 and dependants of freedom fighters 3, so their cut-offs track how many people applied rather than the paper. Women of UP, with 31 posts, sat at 91 to 93 across UR, OBC and SC. Full marks given for ambiguous questions lifted every score a little.
Preparation Tips
Check eligibility first. You need the diploma (a degree alone won't do), and the A-1 medical with naked 6/6 vision. Lasik rules you out of SCTO.
Don't guess blindly. Three wrong answers cancel one right one, and 140 questions in 2 hours is about 51 seconds each.
Work through the discipline syllabus. Give extra time to Control Systems (transfer functions, Mason's formula, root locus, Bode plots, non-linear behaviour) and to Generation, Transmission and Distribution (tariffs, faults, switchgear, HRC fuses, Buchholz relay, Merz-Price system, lightning arresters). Prepare the general half as a standard aptitude paper.
Use the official mock and the objection window. UPMRC puts a mock test on its recruitment portal. After the exam, check the response key and challenge errors; in 2024 UPMRC awarded full marks for every ambiguous question.
Get your paperwork exactly right. Matching photos, the English handwritten declaration, and a UP domicile certificate if you claim reservation.
Budget for joining: ₹41,300 training cost and a ₹1,50,000 bond.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers are available for UPMRC SCTO. UPMRC doesn't keep a past-paper archive.
What it does publish, on the recruitment portal linked from UPMRC Careers, is a post-wise syllabus and a free mock test on the exam interface, and after the exam your own response key. The last advertisement came out in March 2024.
