UPPCL Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

Each post has its own pattern. This is the Executive Assistant paper from advertisement 09/VSA/2022/EA, UPPCL's largest recruitment.

Part I: computer knowledge, 50 marks, qualifying only

Score at least 20 or your Part II sheet isn't marked at all. Part I marks don't count in merit.

Part II: 180 marks, the merit paper

One mark a question, a quarter mark off for each wrong answer in both parts, set in Hindi and English. Language is 110 of the 180 marks, more than General Studies and Reasoning together.

Part III: typing test, 20 marks

Called on Part II merit, at not fewer than three times the vacancies.

• Five minutes on a computer, in Hindi and in English.
• Hindi is typed in Kruti Dev 010 or 016.
• 30 words a minute in Hindi is mandatory. Below it, you're out.
• The 20 marks go only to those who reach 30 in Hindi and at least 35 in English. Otherwise you stay in with no typing marks.

Merit is out of 200

Part II's 180 plus the typing test's 20, so of the 230 CBT questions, 180 decide your rank. Where the test runs over several shifts or days, both CBT parts are normalised by the method annexed to the advertisement.

UPPCL prints the syllabus in each advertisement, and it differs by post. For the Executive Assistant paper:

General Studies

History, geography and socio-economic development of Uttar Pradesh and India; current events of national and international importance; Indian polity and the Constitution; the Indian economy; general science; and environment. The UP part is substantial.

Reasoning

Series, analogy, classification, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction sense, seating and ordering arrangements, syllogisms, statement and conclusion, and non-verbal reasoning on figures.

General Hindi

At intermediate general level: vyakaran, sandhi and samas, upsarg and pratyay, paryayvachi and vilom, muhavare and lokoktiyan, ashuddhi shodhan, vakya rachna and gadyansh comprehension.

General English

Also intermediate general level: grammar and usage, error spotting, sentence improvement, vocabulary with synonyms, antonyms and idioms, fill in the blanks, and reading comprehension.

Computer knowledge (Part I)

The NIELIT CCC course: computer fundamentals, the operating system, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet and email, digital financial services and cyber security basics. The advertisement names CCC as the standard, so prepare from NIELIT's own syllabus.

Typing

Hindi in Kruti Dev 010 or 016, a specific keyboard layout (not Unicode or phonetic) that has to be learned. Five minutes each in Hindi and English.

Technical posts

Technician, Junior Engineer and Assistant Engineer papers add the relevant engineering branch, at the level of the post's qualification. Check your advertisement.

Each advertisement sets its own conditions. For Executive Assistant (09/VSA/2022/EA):

Reservation

Only original residents of Uttar Pradesh get reservation. Candidates from other states apply as unreserved, and you're considered only in the category you applied under. Horizontal reservation for ex-servicemen, dependants of freedom fighters and persons with disabilities works within that.

Age relaxation

Certificate dates

• OBC (NCL) and EWS certificates had to be issued after 31 March 2022 for that cycle.
• The domicile certificate after 31 March 2019.
• A dependant-of-freedom-fighter certificate must come from the District Magistrate.

The dates change each cycle; a certificate issued too early isn't accepted.

Other conditions

• A no-objection certificate at appointment if you already work for a government or semi-government body.
• No one dismissed from central or state government service, or a body they own or control, and no one convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude.
• Police character verification, a character certificate from your last institution's head, and certificates from two respectable people in your locality who aren't relatives.
• A medical fitness certificate from the district CMO or Deputy CMO, or a medical officer the Corporation authorises, before joining.

Assistant Engineer

A GATE score is required to apply, since the notice of 13 September 2024.

Most posts: a computer based test, then a skill or physical test if the post needs one, then document verification. For Executive Assistant:

1. CBT Part I, computer knowledge, 50 marks. Score 20 or Part II isn't marked. Not counted in merit.
2. CBT Part II, 180 marks. The ranking paper.
3. Typing test, for at least three times the vacancies. Hindi 30 wpm mandatory; 20 marks need English 35 wpm too.
4. Document verification, for up to two times the category-wise vacancies, ranked on Part II plus typing.
5. Character verification, medical and appointment.

Merit is out of 200. Ties go to the older candidate. There's no interview.

Everything is provisional on what you put in the form. No change to name, date of birth, caste or category is allowed at any stage, and wrong information can cancel your candidature without notice. You must attend the typing test and document verification in person on the given date; miss either and you're out, with no second chance.

Candidates selected for discom posts then submit options for discom allotment through a separate notice. That decides where you'll work.

Assistant Engineer is shortlisted on the GATE score, with no UPPCL paper.

Pay follows the Uttar Pradesh pay matrix, and each advertisement gives the level for its post:

UPPCL's own allowances are paid on top.

Posts run from Technician and Camp Assistant through Executive Assistant, Assistant Accountant, Junior Engineer, Personnel Officer and Accounts Officer, up to Assistant Engineer, Deputy Chief Accounts Officer, Deputy General Manager, General Manager, Chief General Manager, Company Secretary and Directors. There's no single UPPCL pay scale; check the level in your advertisement.

Apply online at www.uppcl.org, through the tab for your advertisement (for example "Apply online against Advt No. 09/VSA/2022/EA for the post of Executive Assistant"), and read its How to Apply page. Paper or in-person applications aren't accepted.

That's per application, so several posts cost several fees. Non-refundable and not carried over. Bank charges are extra. Pay by net banking, card or payment gateway, or by State Bank of India challan.

• Enter everything correctly the first time. No changes are allowed later.
• Keep your email and mobile active until the final result. Exam information comes that way.
• At document verification, bring a printout of the application, self-attested copies of every certificate and the originals: qualifications and marksheets, caste, EWS, freedom-fighter dependant (from the DM), disability, domicile and ex-servicemen certificates as applicable.

Any dispute falls under Uttar Pradesh jurisdiction only.

The Vidyut Sewa Ayog recruits for UPPCL and the other state power companies.

Assistant Engineer recruitment also covers UPPTCL (transmission), UPSLDC (the state load despatch centre) and UPRVUNL (generation).

Discom allotment happens after selection, through a separate options notice, as it did for the 2022 Technician (Electrical) and Executive Assistant selections.

The computer based tests are held at centres in Uttar Pradesh. Each advertisement and admit card gives the centres.

If the test runs over several shifts or days, both parts are normalised and merit uses the normalised marks, so raw scores from different shifts can't be compared.

The typing test and document verification are held later, at centres the Commission names, in person. Take the admit card and original photo ID to the CBT. For the typing test and document verification, also take the application printout and your certificates with copies.

On 8 September 2026 the Vacancy/Results page had only senior posts open: Company Secretary on a fixed term (advertisement 03/VSA/2025/CS, closing date extended through 2026), Director (IT) advertised on 30 June 2026, and Directors under advertisement 01/2026. Nothing for Executive Assistant, Technician, Junior Engineer or Assistant Engineer.

The last bulk cycle: 2022

Answer keys and objections ran through late 2022 and 2023, skill tests and interviews in 2023, and selection lists and discom allotment in 2023 and 2024. Expect about two years from advertisement to allotment.

Notice 658/VSA/2024/AE of 13 September 2024 told future Assistant Engineer applicants to sit GATE (it named GATE 2025) and get a score.

Download admit cards from www.uppcl.org. They aren't posted. You get an email and SMS when they're ready, so keep both active until the final result, and check the site yourself too.

There's one for the CBT and a separate one for the typing test. In the 2022 Executive Assistant cycle they were months apart.

An admit card doesn't confirm eligibility; candidature can still be cancelled for wrong information. Carry original photo ID.

The answer key is uploaded within three days of the CBT, and you have three days from upload to object, with evidence. Subject experts decide, and nothing is accepted after that.

Download your response sheet yourself from www.uppcl.org with your login. The Commission won't send it.

In the 2022 cycle the Commission published, in order: the key with objection window, the typing test shortlist and call letter, the document verification list, the selected list (with corrigenda where needed), and the discom allotment options notice. All are on the Vacancy/Results page under the advertisement number.

The only bar printed in advance for Executive Assistant is 20 of 50 in Part I, and the Hindi typing minimum of 30 wpm.

Cut-offs are set after each exam, per post and per category, on normalised marks. Only UP residents compete in reserved categories.

With 1,033 Executive Assistant vacancies in 2022, that meant roughly three thousand candidates called to type. Result notices are on the Vacancy/Results page, and your own marks are on www.uppcl.org under your login.

1. Work from your post's advertisement. The scheme is printed in each one.
2. For Assistant Engineer, prepare for GATE. Without a GATE score you can't apply.
3. Give language the time its marks deserve. Hindi and English are 110 of the 180 Executive Assistant merit marks. Most people spend their time the other way round.
4. Learn Kruti Dev early. 30 wpm in Hindi is mandatory and 35 in English earns the 20 typing marks. That takes months of daily practice, in Kruti Dev 010 or 016 specifically, five-minute runs.
5. Clear Part I and move on. Learn the short NIELIT CCC syllabus; you need 20 of 50 and nothing more counts.
6. Learn Uttar Pradesh. General Studies has a big UP section that national current affairs won't cover.
7. Don't guess blindly. Four wrong answers cancel one right one.
8. Get your certificates issued within the dates your advertisement sets.

No previous year papers are available from UPPCL as of now; the Vidyut Sewa Ayog keeps no archive.

After each CBT it uploads the answer key within three days, and you can download your own response sheet from www.uppcl.org while the window is open. The advertisement for your post (for example 09/VSA/2022/EA) carries the scheme and syllabus. New advertisements appear on the Vacancy/Results page; there's no fixed month.

Is there one UPPCL exam?

No. The Vidyut Sewa Ayog advertises post by post, each with its own paper, eligibility and stages.

Is there still a UPPCL Assistant Engineer exam?

No. Since 13 September 2024, Assistant Engineer (Trainee) is shortlisted on the GATE score.

Do the Part I computer marks count?

No. You need 20 of 50 for your Part II paper to be marked, and that's all they do.

Is the typing test just qualifying?

Not quite. Hindi at 30 wpm is mandatory, and the test carries 20 merit marks if you also reach 35 wpm in English.

Which font is the Hindi typing test in?

Kruti Dev 010 or 016.

Is there negative marking?

Yes, a quarter mark per wrong answer, in both parts.

I'm not from Uttar Pradesh. Can I apply?

Yes, but only as unreserved, whatever your category at home.

What is the application fee?

₹1,180 for unreserved, UP EWS and UP OBC (NCL); ₹826 for UP SC and ST; ₹12 for UP candidates with disabilities. Non-refundable.

What is the pay?

It depends on the post. Executive Assistant is Level 04, ₹27,200 to ₹86,100.

Can I correct my application?

No. Name, date of birth, caste and category can't be changed at any stage.

Is a recruitment open now?

Not at entry level, as of 8 September 2026.
