Rules that cost marks
- Writing your name, roll number or any identifying mark in a script costs 10 per cent of that paper's full marks: 20 marks on a 200-mark paper.
- PSCWB can set qualifying marks in any paper. Miss one and that paper's marks are left out of your aggregate.
- Apart from the language papers, write in English or Bengali (Political Science and Botany optionals also in Nepali), and in one language throughout each paper.
Syllabus
PSCWB publishes one Scheme and Syllabus document per cycle on its Syllabus page. For the current cycle it runs to fifty-nine pages, published on 14 November 2025. PSCWB calls the syllabi indicative.
Preliminary
- English Composition: synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, vocabulary, phrasal verbs, words with more than one meaning, appropriate and qualifying words.
- General Science: everyday science, as a well-educated non-specialist would know it.
- History of India: broad social, economic and political understanding.
- Geography of India, with special reference to West Bengal.
- Plus current events, polity and economy, the National Movement, and General Mental Ability.
Main, compulsory papers
- Arithmetic is at the level of the Madhyamik compulsory Mathematics paper of the West Bengal Board. The other compulsory papers are graduate level.
- Test of Reasoning: analytical reasoning and data sufficiency; logical deduction, strength of arguments, implications and inferring from diagrams; letter and number series; inferring from data; analogy; symbol interpretation; mathematical puzzles; odd man out; perception; non-verbal reasoning; correct sequence.
- Environment (GS-II): biodiversity and the Coastal Regulation Zone, global warming, industrial and environmental pollution, the ozone layer.
- Indian Economy and the RBI (Paper V): centre-state relations and devolution of funds, planning and five year plans, RBI functions and monetary policy, the Central and State Finance Commissions, and fiscal policy.
The 38 optional subjects (Groups A and B)

Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications
A degree of a recognised university, and the ability to read, write and speak Bengali, which isn't required if your mother tongue is Nepali (Finance Department Notification No. 1243-F(P) of 2 March 2016). Both by the closing date.
Age, on 1 January of the exam year
| Group | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| A and C | 21 | 36 |
| B, West Bengal Police Service | 20 | 36 |
| D | 21 | 39 |
So at 20 you can apply for Group B only. Age is taken from the Madhyamik certificate, and the limits apply to government employees too.

|---|---|
| SC and ST of West Bengal | Five years |
| OBC (non-creamy layer) of West Bengal | Three years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, 40 per cent and above | Up to 45 |
Reservation
- Reservation is for SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) of West Bengal only. Candidates from other states compete as unreserved.
- PwBD (40 per cent and above) reservation applies if you can do the job.
- Meritorious Sportspersons reservation is for Group D only, across twenty listed sports at international, national, inter-university and National School Games level.
Certificates must come from a competent West Bengal authority and be issued by the closing date: the SDO (in Kolkata, the DM South 24-Parganas or an ADM, and the District Welfare Officer) for caste; a government hospital medical board for disability; the national federation, state association, university sports director or school sports director for sport. OBC candidates must bring a renewed non-creamy-layer certificate before interview and at appointment.
You must be an Indian citizen (natural or by registration) or otherwise declared eligible by the Government of India, in which case appointment waits for the eligibility certificate.
Conditions for particular services
| Service | Condition |
|---|---|
| West Bengal Police Service | Minimum height 1.65 m for men, 1.50 m for women, relaxed for Gorkhas, Garwalis and Assamese Tribals. State your height in the form |
| Assistant Canal Revenue Officer | Work in remote areas covering many villages, attending Tahsil and Zilla offices, possibly with only a cycle to get about |
| West Bengal Junior Social Welfare Service | For Homes for the Blind or Deaf and Dumb, a qualification in their training (or in-service training). Men aren't posted to institutions for women, and vice versa |
| West Bengal Subordinate Land Revenue Service, Grade-I | Good working Bengali; Nepali mother-tongue candidates must pass a departmental Bengali exam within two years. Appointment is provisional with six months' in-service training, and failing the end exam can mean discharge without notice |
Selection Process
- Preliminary: one 200-mark objective paper, screening only.
- Main: six compulsory papers, plus two optional papers for Groups A and B.
- Personality Test, at PSCWB's office in Kolkata.
Everyone shortlisted from the Main for any group sits the same single Personality Test. At that stage you state your order of preference for the services in your groups, and it's final.
| Group | Written | Personality Test | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1600 | 200 | 1800 |
| B | 1600 | 200 | 1800 |
| C | 1200 | 150 | 1350 |
| D | 1200 | 100 | 1300 |
Posts are allotted by merit and vacancies. PSCWB considers your preferences as far as practicable, but can allot you to any service in your groups.
Scribes and extra time
- PwBD candidates with a writing limitation may have a scribe, usually their own, with a qualification one step below theirs, details in PSCWB's proforma.
- You need a certificate from the CMO or Medical Superintendent of a government institution. Blind candidates, those with both arms affected, and those with cerebral palsy get a scribe on request.
- No scribe is accepted after the edit window closes. Use one scribe throughout if you can, except for the language papers.
- Compensatory time is 20 minutes per hour.
Apply online, once. A second application can get both cancelled.
Salary
| Pay Level | Scale | Services |

| 14 June 2026, Sunday | Preliminary, 12.00 noon to 2.30 p.m. |
The 2025 exam was announced on 29 November 2025 (Indicative Advertisement No. 03/2025), with age, fees, scheme and syllabus to be posted later.
Expect a long cycle. The 2023 exam (Advertisement No. 01/2023) opened on 28 February 2023; Group A and B Main results came on 25 September 2025, Group A and Police recommendations on 27 January 2026, Group C Main results on 19 February 2026 and Group C recommendations on 5 May 2026. That's about three years.
New dates appear on PSCWB's Announcement page, which is kept more current than its Advertisement page.
Admit Card
Download the e-admit card from psc.wb.gov.in. For the 2024 Prelims it was available from 4 June 2026, ten days before the exam.
Entry closes half an hour before the paper starts (11.30 a.m. for a noon start). PSCWB asks candidates to check its website often for updates.
Result
Results come group by group, at different times, on PSCWB's Results and Announcement pages: Main results for each group, Personality Test schedules, category-wise cut-offs for the interview call, vacancy lists, and recommendations. Once a cycle closes, PSCWB publishes the Preliminary, Main and Personality Test marks of qualified candidates.
In the 2023 cycle, Group C's Main results came five months after Groups A and B. Recommendations followed in January 2026 for Groups A and B and May 2026 for Group C.
Cut Off
PSCWB doesn't publish cut-offs in advance, because vacancies aren't known when the exam is written. After each stage it publishes the cut-off marks of different categories for the Personality Test call, separately for each group, on its Announcement page. A figure without both the group and the category tells you little.
The only bars fixed in advance are any qualifying marks PSCWB sets for individual papers. Miss one and that paper drops out of your aggregate.
Preparation Tips
- Decide your groups first. The choice is final and decides whether you write an optional. Applying for more than one guards against a group going unfilled.
- Prepare for an objective Main. Four of six compulsory papers are MCQs with negative marking.
- Practise the language papers to their word limits (150-word letter or 200-word report), with translation both ways. For Groups C and D they're the only written papers.
- Don't fear Arithmetic. It's Madhyamik level.
- Spread Prelims preparation evenly across the eight blocks. English and Mental Ability are 50 marks, a quarter of the paper, and easy to practise. Study West Bengal's geography.
- Pick your optional on its weight: 400 of 1800 for Groups A and B.
- Never write your name on a script.
- Get certificates dated before the closing date, and arrange any scribe before the edit window shuts.
- Work through PSCWB's past WBCS papers.
Sample Papers
PSCWB publishes past WBCS papers, Preliminary and Main, on its Previous Years Question Paper page, and answer keys on its Answer Key page. The current syllabus is in the Scheme and Syllabus of 14 November 2025.
