The preliminary only screens; its marks are dropped. The merit list is the Final (450) plus the personality test (100). All three Final papers are written on one day. There is negative marking in the preliminary, and naming yourself in a Final script costs 10% of that paper. Details are in the MSRE 2024 scheme and syllabus.

Syllabus
  • General Studies (preliminary and Final): general knowledge across different spheres. WBPSC gives no topic list beyond that.
  • Arithmetic (preliminary and Final): the Madhyamik (WBBSE) syllabus.
  • Paper I, English: drafting a report from points supplied; translation into English from Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali; precis; correct use of words, sentence correction, common phrases, synonyms and antonyms.
  • Paper II, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali: report drafting, translation from English, precis and grammar.

Papers I and II are set at Higher Secondary (Class 12) standard. In Paper III you may answer General Studies in English, Bengali or Nepali and Arithmetic in English or Bengali, but one language per group.

Eligibility Criteria
  • A degree from a recognised university, or equivalent, by the closing date.
  • Age 20 to 39 on 1 January 2024 in the advertisement. On 20 May 2026 WBPSC raised the upper limit to 44 under a Finance Department notification of 16 May 2026. SC and ST candidates of West Bengal get 5 more years, OBC 3; PwBD up to 45. Age is taken from the Madhyamik certificate.
  • Ability to read, write and speak Bengali, unless your mother tongue is Nepali. Others are tested on Bengali at the personality test.
  • Indian citizen, or another nationality declared eligible by the Government of India.
  • Lady Extension Officer, Mass Education Extension, is for women only.

Reservation for SC, ST, OBC and EWS is for West Bengal candidates only. The OBC A and B lists follow the 2025 Backward Classes Welfare notifications and remain subject to cases in the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court.

Selection Process
  1. Preliminary exam at district centres; qualifiers go to the Final that same cycle only.
  2. Final written exam in Kolkata, three papers in one day.
  3. Personality test for a limited number of candidates, with document verification and the Bengali test where needed.
  4. Merit list on Final plus personality test marks, then allotment of posts by rank and choice.

The minimum aggregate is 40% for UR, EWS and meritorious sportspersons, 38% for OBC, 35% for SC, and 30% for ST and PwBD. Ties go to the higher personality test mark, then to the better two papers, then to the older candidate. Police verification and a medical board follow selection.

Preparation Tips
  • The preliminary is three-quarters General Studies, so current affairs, Indian and West Bengal history, geography, polity and everyday science carry it.
  • The Final is where rank is decided. 300 of its 450 marks are language papers, so practise report drafting, precis and translation in both languages until you can finish in 90 minutes.
  • Arithmetic stays at Madhyamik level in both stages; keep it fast and error-free.
  • Past MSRE preliminary and main papers are on the WBPSC previous papers page.
