A teacher in his environmental studies class, divides the children into groups and asks them to collect some objects present in the school. After that he sits with the children and asks them to distribute those objects into different groups. Children divide objects into different groups on the basis of their properties. What could be the most appropriate purpose for the teacher to conduct this activity ?

The most appropriate purpose is that at the primary stage, children learn better by interacting with each other.
The activity is built around group work: children collect objects together, discuss them and agree on how to sort them. Sharing observations, explaining their reasons and hearing other children's ideas is how young children build concepts such as properties and classification, which is the social-constructivist view behind EVS teaching.
The activity is not meant to favour the cognitive domain over others; it involves social, physical and emotional engagement too. No single activity develops understanding of 'all the concepts', and its aim is understanding through exploration, not avoiding mistakes in definitions and facts.
