Consider the following statements about brightening agents.
1. They emit blue light by converting ultraviolet.
2. They can make a substrate appear brighter than a perfect white.
3. They work by absorbing yellow wavelengths from the light.
Answer: D
The first two are correct and describe fluorescence. The third describes a blueing agent instead, which is a quite different and less effective approach. Blueing removes light rather than adding it. The two achieve similar ends by opposite means.
