Discussion
Arrange the stratospheric ozone depletion sequence in order:
1. Chlorofluorocarbons are released at the surface
2. They mix slowly into the stratosphere
3. Ultraviolet photolysis releases chlorine atoms
4. Chlorine catalytically destroys ozone molecules
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: C
The compounds are too stable to break down in the troposphere, which is precisely what allows them to reach the stratosphere intact. One chlorine atom then destroys many thousands of ozone molecules before it is removed.
