The diameter of a unit density sphere with the same settling velocity as a particle is its _____ diameter.
Answer: A
Correct answer: aerodynamic
The aerodynamic diameter is defined as the diameter of a sphere of unit density having the same settling velocity as the particle in question, so it folds size, shape and density into one number.
That number is what governs how the particle settles, how it deposits in the respiratory tract and how it is captured in a sampler or control device - which is why PM10 and PM2.5 are defined in these terms rather than by physical size. A dense compact grain and a light fluffy agglomerate of the same physical diameter behave quite differently, and only the aerodynamic value predicts either.
