Ozone measured near the ground, formed photochemically from traffic emissions, is a component of _____ smog.
Answer: D
Correct answer: photochemical
Photochemical smog is the sunlight-driven, oxidising type: oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds from traffic react through radical chains to produce ozone, peroxyacyl nitrates and secondary organic aerosol, peaking in the afternoon and downwind of the city.
It contrasts with sulphurous, or London-type, smog, which is reducing rather than oxidising - sulphur dioxide and smoke from coal burning accumulating in cold, damp, stagnant winter conditions. The two have opposite chemistry, occur in opposite weather, and need entirely different controls.
