Which of the following is NOT a primary pollutant?
Answer: B
Correct answer: Ground level ozone
Ground level ozone is secondary, not primary. Nothing emits it: it is formed in the atmosphere when oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds react in sunlight, which is why it peaks in the afternoon and downwind of the city whose traffic supplied the precursors.
The other three are primary, leaving their source in the form in which they are measured - particulate from a stack, sulphur dioxide from burning sulphur-bearing fuel, and carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion. Only a primary pollutant can be given an emission limit.
