Carbon monoxide is pollutant as it
Answer: D
Carbon monoxide is a pollutant because it combines with hemoglobin.
CO binds to haemoglobin about 200 times more strongly than oxygen, forming carboxyhaemoglobin. Blood then carries much less oxygen to the tissues, causing headache, dizziness and, at high levels, death by suffocation.
It does not act by inactivating nerves or blocking glycolysis. It does burn in oxygen to form carbon dioxide, but that is not why it is poisonous; its danger lies in displacing oxygen from haemoglobin.
