Discussion
Consider the following statements about cut-outs in a pressurised fuselage:
1. The load carried by the removed skin must pass around the opening.
2. Corners are radiused to reduce the stress concentration.
3. A doubler can be made arbitrarily thick with no penalty.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
The first two are correct. The third ignores the catch: an over-thick doubler creates a sharp stiffness discontinuity at its own edge, and the fatigue problem simply relocates there. Doubler sizing is a balance rather than a maximisation.
