Collect each variable in turn.
\[ a: \ 2 + 5 - 5 = 2 \]
\[ b: \ 4 - 9 + 11 = 6 \]
\[ c: \ 2 + 4 - 8 = -2 \]
\[ d: \ 2 - 1 - 4 = -3 \]
\[ \therefore\ 2a + 6b - 2c - 3d \]
Taking one variable at a time across all four expressions is safer than adding them two at a time.
