How many such pairs of letters are there in the word SINGAPORE each of which has as many letters between them in the word as in the English alphabets ?
Answer: D
There are four such pairs, so the answer is More than three.
A pair qualifies when the number of letters between them in the word equals the number between them in the alphabet. In SINGAPORE (S I N G A P O R E):
- I and G: one letter (N) between them in the word, one (H) in the alphabet.
- A and E: three letters (P, O, R) in the word, three (B, C, D) in the alphabet.
- P and O: adjacent in the word and in the alphabet.
- P and R: one letter (O) in the word, one (Q) in the alphabet.
Counting only pairs that run in alphabetical order in both gives two (A-E and P-R), but the standard method counts pairs in either direction, which makes four, more than three.
