In a 50 ppm Zn standard, an analyst determined 54 ppm Zn. The calculated error is :
Answer: D
The error is 8·0%.
The relative error is the difference between the measured and true values as a percentage of the true value:
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{error} &= \frac{54 - 50}{50} \times 100 \\ &= \frac{4}{50} \times 100 = 8\% \end{aligned} \]
The other values come from slips in the arithmetic: 0·8% is the answer divided by ten, and 0·4% and 1·6% match no correct use of the 4 ppm difference against the 50 ppm standard.
