A plane wave has a field strength of 1 V per metre. What is its power density?
Answer: B
Power density is the field squared divided by the intrinsic impedance:
\[ S = \tfrac{1^{2}}{377} \approx 0.00265 \]
watts per square metre, that is about 2.65 mW per square metre. The relation is the bridge between a field strength measurement, which is what an EMC receiver reports through its antenna factor, and a power density limit, which is how exposure standards are written. Being able to move between the two quickly is essential in compliance work.
