Why is directivity obtained by integrating the measured pattern rather than measured directly?
Answer: A
Directivity compares the peak intensity with the average over the whole sphere, so it requires knowledge of the pattern everywhere and follows by integration. Comparing the computed directivity with a measured gain then yields the radiation efficiency, which is one of the few practical routes to that quantity. Directivity deliberately excludes losses, integration is slower rather than quicker, and gain measurement is the more straightforward of the two.
