Discussion
Given below are two statements Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Read the statements carefully and choose correct answer from the codes given below :
(A) Subsidence inversions are of common occurrence in regions of high pressure
(R) Winds around high pressure cell are characterized by clockwise circulation in northern hemisphere
Answer: B
Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
(A) is true. In a high-pressure system air sinks from aloft and is compressed and warmed adiabatically as it descends. This produces a layer of warm air above cooler surface air, a subsidence inversion, which is why such inversions are common under anticyclones and trap pollution there.
(R) is also true: in the northern hemisphere, the Coriolis effect makes winds blow clockwise and outward around a high-pressure cell. But the direction of horizontal circulation does not cause the inversion; the descent and adiabatic warming of air does. So (R) does not explain (A).
