The radius of the two circular fields is in the ratio 3: 5 the area of the first field is what percent less than the area of the second?
Answer: D
Take the radii as 3 and 5, so the areas are proportional to their squares.
\[ A_{1} : A_{2} = 9 : 25 \]
The shortfall is measured against the second field:
\[ \frac{25 - 9}{25} \times 100 = \frac{16}{25} \times 100 = 64\% \]
Dividing by 9 instead would answer a different question - by how much the second exceeds the first, which is 177.8%.
