A whole number is added to 100 and the same number is subtracted from 100. The sum of the two resulting numbers so obtained is :
Answer: A
The sum is 200.
Let the whole number be n. Then:
\[ (100 + n) + (100 - n) = 200 \]
The n added and the n subtracted cancel, so the sum is always 200, whatever whole number is chosen. For example, with n = 30: 130 + 70 = 200. The answers 0 and 100 come from treating the operations as cancelling the 100s rather than the n.
