Formation of O('D) atom in the \(\mathrm{O_{3}} + hv \rightarrow \mathrm{O_{2}} + \mathrm{O('D)}\) reaction is due to :
Answer: B
The excited oxygen atom forms by Photolysis.
The reaction shown is driven by a photon (the \(hv\) term). Ultraviolet light of wavelength shorter than about 310 nm splits ozone into an oxygen molecule and an oxygen atom in the excited singlet state written O(1D). This atom is important because it reacts with water vapour to make the hydroxyl radical, the main cleaning agent of the troposphere.
Collisions do the opposite: they quench O(1D) back to the ground-state atom. A termolecular reaction (O + O2 + M) is how ozone is formed, not split. Nuclear fusion has no place in atmospheric chemistry.
