Which method is normally used to assess static stability?
Answer: A
The parcel method displaces a small sample of air and compares its temperature with that of the undisturbed environment at the new level, assuming the environment is unaffected. It is simple and gives the right answer in most circumstances. The slice and layer methods relax that assumption in different ways and give slightly different criteria, and the normal mode approach belongs to the analysis of dynamic rather than static instability. Knowing which assumptions the parcel method makes is what tells you when to distrust its conclusion.
