Which assumption does the parcel method make about the environment?
Answer: B
The parcel is treated as infinitesimal so that its motion produces no compensating circulation, which is exactly the assumption the slice method removes. In reality an ascending parcel must be balanced by descent nearby, and if the ascending area is comparable with the descending area the compensating warming alters the criterion. The assumption is good for isolated thermals and poor for widespread ascent. Most errors here come from carrying a result across from a neighbouring case where it does not hold.
