Which term describes the stability of a layer that is lifted as a whole?
Answer: A
Potential instability arises when equivalent potential temperature decreases with height, so lifting the whole layer saturates the moist base before the dry top and steepens the lapse rate to the point of instability. It concerns a layer rather than a parcel, which is the distinction from conditional instability. Frontal and orographic lifting are the usual releasing mechanisms. Checking the units of each quantity catches a wrong formula before the arithmetic begins.
