Ozone is produced photochemically in the tropical upper stratosphere yet its column abundance is greatest at middle and high latitudes, which can only be explained by poleward transport. Dobson noticed this apparent paradox and it led directly to the proposal of the circulation. Age of air measurements using long lived tracers have since confirmed the picture quantitatively. Reading the definition literally, rather than recalling a formula, is the reliable route through questions of this shape.
