Discussion
Consider the following pairs of check and what it establishes.
Reagent blank - Contamination from the procedure
Spike recovery - Losses and suppression in the matrix
Certified reference material - Accuracy against an accepted value
Duplicate analysis - Freedom from matrix interference
How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
Answer: D
The first three are correct and the fourth is not, so three match. Duplicates establish precision, how repeatable a result is, and say nothing about whether it is right - two identical wrong answers are perfectly possible. Distinguishing precision from accuracy is the oldest lesson in analytical chemistry and the one most often forgotten when a set of close results looks convincing.
