The orbital described by the quantum numbers n=4 and \(l\) = 2 is
Answer: E
The orbital is 4d.
The principal quantum number gives the shell (4), and \(l = 2\) is a d subshell (\(l = 0, 1, 2, 3\) are s, p, d, f). So the orbital is 4d.
4s has \(l = 0\) and 4f has \(l = 3\). 3d has \(n = 3\). 2d does not exist, because \(l\) must be less than \(n\).
A general rule worth carrying: for a shell \(n\), the allowed \(l\) values run from 0 to \(n - 1\), so the first d subshell is 3d and the first f subshell is 4f.
