The total orbital angular momentum quantum number L and spin quantum S of the term symbol 4G is :
Answer: C
L and S are 4 and 3/2.
In a term symbol 2S+1L, the letter gives L (S = 0, P = 1, D = 2, F = 3, G = 4) and the left superscript gives the multiplicity 2S + 1. For 4G, written 4G in the paper:
\[ \begin{aligned} L &= 4\ (\text{G}) \\ 2S + 1 &= 4 \Rightarrow S = 3/2 \end{aligned} \]
The other pairs misread the letter (2 is D, 3 is F, 5 is H) or the multiplicity (S = 1/2 would be a doublet).
