When a radioactive material emits an α -particle, its position in the periodic table
Answer: D
The position is lowered by two places.
An α-particle is a helium nucleus with 2 protons and 2 neutrons. Emitting it lowers the atomic number by 2 and the mass number by 4, so the daughter element lies two places to the left (earlier) in the periodic table. For example, uranium-238 (Z = 92) decays to thorium-234 (Z = 90).
Beta emission moves an element one place up (Z increases by 1), and gamma emission leaves it unchanged; neither describes α-decay.
