Discussion
Arrange the exhaust aftertreatment of a modern heavy diesel in flow order:
1. Oxidation catalyst treating carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons
2. Diesel particulate filter trapping soot
3. Urea injection and mixing
4. Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: D
The oxidation catalyst also raises the temperature and the nitrogen dioxide fraction that helps the filter regenerate passively. Urea must be injected and mixed before the reduction catalyst if the ammonia is to be distributed evenly across it.
