Discussion
Consider the following statements about lead acid batteries.
1. A fully charged cell reads about 1.280 specific gravity.
2. Only distilled water should be added to a serviceable battery.
3. Charging a battery releases chlorine gas.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
The first two are correct, but charging electrolyses water into hydrogen and oxygen rather than releasing chlorine. Hydrogen is the explosion hazard that dictates ventilation and the jump starting sequence. The order in which the effects act is what decides the outcome, so it is worth establishing first. A symptom that appears under one condition and not another is what narrows the diagnosis quickly. Tracing the requirement back to the physical constraint that produces it makes the answer follow.
