The average of 5 consecutive integers starting with m is n. What is the average of 6 consecutive integers starting with (m+2) ?
Answer: A
The average is \(\frac{2n+5}{2}\).
Five consecutive integers starting at m are m to m + 4, and their average is the middle one: \(n = m + 2\). Six consecutive integers starting at m + 2 run from m + 2 to m + 7, and their average is the midpoint of the ends:
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{average} &= \frac{(m+2) + (m+7)}{2} = m + 4.5 \\ &= n + 2.5 = \frac{2n + 5}{2} \end{aligned} \]
n + 2 and n + 3 are near misses on either side of n + 2.5, and \(\frac{n+5}{2}\) halves n by mistake.
