What is the average of the given fractions?
\(3\frac{1}{2}, 5\frac{1}{4}, 2\frac{3}{4}\) and \(2\frac{1}{2}\)
Answer: A
The average is \(3\frac{1}{2}\). Add the fractions. The whole parts give 3 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 12 and the fractional parts give \[\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{4} + \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2} = 2\] so the sum is 14. Dividing by the four numbers gives 14/4 = 3.5, which is \(3\frac{1}{2}\). The options \(2\frac{1}{2}\), \(3\frac{3}{4}\) and \(2\frac{3}{4}\) come from dropping a term or adding the fractional parts wrongly.
