The average of five consecutive odd numbers is 61. What is the difference between the highest number and lowest number ?
Answer: B
The difference is 8.
Consecutive odd numbers go up in steps of 2, so five of them with an average of 61 are centred on 61: 57, 59, 61, 63 and 65. The difference between the highest and the lowest is
\[ 65 - 57 = 8 \]
In fact the average is irrelevant: any five consecutive odd numbers span four steps of 2, which is always 8. 4 is the span of three such numbers, and 12 and 16 are the spans of seven and nine.
