The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Rice for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. Their work identified the virus behind most cases of blood-borne hepatitis that were not hepatitis A or B, making blood tests and antiviral drugs possible. Hepatitis A and B viruses had already been identified earlier, and Hepatitis D was not the subject of the 2020 award. The three scientists showed that a virus, not hepatitis A or B, was behind many cases of chronic hepatitis acquired through blood transfusion, and the discovery made it possible to test donated blood and to develop antiviral treatment.
