Consider the following statements about staging:
1. An impulse stage takes its whole pressure drop in the vanes.
2. A fifty per cent reaction stage splits the static drop equally.
3. The impulse stage is the more efficient of the two.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are the definitions: an impulse stage takes its whole static pressure drop in the vanes and none in the rotor, while a fifty per cent reaction stage splits it equally. Statement 3 is the reverse of the truth - the impulse stage extracts about twice the work but at lower efficiency, because the entire drop occurring in the vanes gives a very high rotor entry velocity and correspondingly large friction and secondary losses.
