Which relationship holds between that dark feature and the tropopause?
Answer: A
A potential vorticity anomaly of the kind that triggers cyclogenesis corresponds to a downward intrusion of stratospheric air and therefore a locally lowered dynamical tropopause. Cross sections show the two-potential-vorticity-unit surface dipping sharply beneath such a feature. Reading the imagery as a map of tropopause height is what makes it so directly useful. A limit that survives making every external component ideal is an intrinsic one, and worth knowing for that reason.
