Discussion
Consider the following statements about damping devices.
1. Viscous dampers are velocity-dependent.
2. Friction dampers are displacement-dependent.
3. Both add directly to the peak member forces.
Which of the statements are correct?
Answer: A
The classification in the first two statements is correct. The third is wrong for viscous devices, whose force peaks as the structure passes through its neutral position, out of phase with the elastic force in the members.
