A body is 50 per cent clay with 13 per cent loss on ignition and 50 per cent non-clay with no loss. What is the overall loss on ignition?

Half the batch loses thirteen per cent and half loses nothing, so the weighted average is 6.5 per cent. Losses combine by mass fraction, which makes the arithmetic a simple weighted sum. Each material contributes its own loss in proportion to its share.
